If it's any consolation, it has exactly the same effect on me, except I laugh at the ridiculousness of crying to a Rolf Harris song. The greatest pop writers were the beatles, the beach boys, and michael jackson. There are plenty of great pop songs by other artists. I love pop, and I'm not afraid to say it. It just gets a bad wrap because there's alot of douchebags who make shitty pop and not enough serious artists who tackle the genre anymore. I would go as far as to say the Pixies wrote alot of solid pop songs. But they also rocked hard. Syd Barrett Pink Floyd had a few, quirky, but kickass pop songs in the vein of the pixies (using it as an example, even though they came before the pixies) like See Emily Play for example.

Agreed. But I will not agree that the beach boys were a shitty band. Take out Mike Love who contributed nothing musically, and they were actually a solid 50s rock n roll band. Stupid lyrics in the early days, but try to sing their parts and play instruments at the same time and you'd be simplifying it too, brotha.
