this has to be one of the most fascinating threads of recent times.

the thread starter has my applause for the choice of subject.

much more interesting than "what's the last crap you bought" & the like.

i listened to confusion is sex in the car for a long time. i catch my mom humming 'protect me you' every once in a while. haha

my mom always liked cool music because she was really young (my age when she had me), a lot younger than most people of my generation's parents. she dropped my off at my grandma's house and went to lollapalooza when i was five or so.

Savage Clone 04.08.2008 11:06 PM

My mom gave me weirdo 80s hairdos on a regular basis.

My mom gave me money to go to church.

Edit-
My mom is a very pious woman, but that hasn't gotten to her brain. She always took me to church, that is why I am against it now, I saw it as a farce. However, she sees it differently, and I could see why she is like that. It gives her hope.

My Dad- is not that religious, so he never really cared if we went to church.

my mom loves tons of stuff, just the other day i was listening to coil's musick to play in the dark vol. 1 and she said she was really into it.

one of her favorite albums is flag's the first four years.

when i was 13, she drove me and a friend to see morbid angel to this small time wrestling arena in this really shitty part of town. she caught the last few songs from outside and said she really liked it, and whenever i'm playing morbid angel she recognizes them.

she loves the stooges but thinks iggy solo is very boring (she does like "candy" though, also "lust for life" and "the passenger").

i never listened to that but a whole lot of daydream nation in her car. she probably doesn't remember it though.

i remember one time i was playing the velvet underground and she called them the most overrated group there is.

there is no common ground, musically between me and my parents. but thats the case with everyone i know, it doesnt matter at all.
a recent attempt was to give to my father the red violin soundtrack, but he found it too dark and heavy. he told me that he is too old to deal with such music, emotionally and musically. boohoo

My dad overall listens to good, if only ever highly melodic, jazz. However, one time I was at his house and caught him listening to Van Halen with Sammy Hagar singing. That was truly horrifying.

my mum likes some of the more gentle & melodic things that i listen to, belle & sebastian, smog, os mutantes, old reggae, etc.

Cantankerous 04.09.2008 05:19 AM

mine likes sonic youth and all the old 80s alternative shit from when she was in school as well as all of the classic rock...led zeppelin, stones, hendrix, etc. and she absolutely loves bob dylan. we have similar taste in music though she's not so much into the more obscure or experimental things i like but there you have it.

What does your mum think of Rather Ripped, then?

oh she hasn't heard it i don't think. maybe next time i see her i'll play it for her, i don't think she'd like it much though or else she would just say "it's okay".

Dead-Air 04.09.2008 05:37 AM

What exactly is your mom's age?

Cantankerous 04.09.2008 05:41 AM

thirty-six and one-half years.

My mum smiles at some of the music I play. She is kind of fascinated by Diamanda Galas, though, 'cause of her voice and the volume I sometimes played her music at. Maybe there should be a section on this forums where parents discuss the music that we listen to. I'd like to see what would come up.

Cantankerous 04.09.2008 05:44 AM

my mum would always get pissed off when i played the ramones. she hates them.

sarramkrop 04.09.2008 06:07 AM

I wouldn't say my mother likes the majority of the music that I play, she just kind of knows that I like it and accepts it as my own taste. If I'm playing something that is too abrasive to the ears she just ignores it or will ask me to turn it down. She never says ''The music that you like'', more ''Some of that music that you like''.

Savage Clone 04.09.2008 08:25 AM

My dad these days likes mostly acoustic players like Kottke and the like, but has been pretty into Paul Metzger, Jack Rose and Andreas Martin because of those interests. He is also the one responsible for getting me into The Electric Prunes. Growing up, it was all about Donovan, Hendrix, Zeppelin, Doors and the more "mystical" Moody Blues albums.

sarramkrop 04.10.2008 11:29 AM

My mum is totally straight edge. She's not teetotal but she can't even stand the smell of alcohol, she never smoked or taken drugs once in her entire life. She might have had sex, though.

Tokolosh 04.10.2008 12:16 PM

Are you disowning your mother? :)
