VANCOUVER – Perhaps somebody forgot to inform the Slovaks that they had drawn the short straw in this 2010 Olympic hockey tournament. Or maybe they figured, having confounded the skeptics and the schedule-maker four years ago by going undefeated in pool play in Torino, they simply were being perfectly set up to shock the hockey world yet again.

Whatever the case, the little country that supposedly couldn’t somehow found a way Thursday night at Canada Hockey Place. It took a third-period comeback. And it took seven rounds of a shootout -- three of which saw Alex Ovechkin shoot against them.

But at the end of a second straight long, withering night, it was the Slovaks who were still standing -- 2-1 victors over the powerhouse from Russia. And now, a talent-laden Group B that seemingly was set up for a Russia-Czech Republic showdown to decide first place on Rivalry Sunday is suddenly a three-horse race in which nobody can be ruled out.

"We still have a pretty good chance to be No. 1 in our group," Ovechkin said after a game in which he was a bodychecking dynamo but held off the scoresheet other than going 1-for-3 in his shootout attempts.

Ovechkin is correct -- a Russian victory in regulation Sunday would give it the Group B title regardless of the results of the Czech-Latvia game Friday night or the Slovakia-Latvia game Saturday. However, whatever veneer of invincibility the Russians brought into this tournament is now gone.

Then again, so is the notion that the Slovaks were doomed by coming in with a banged-up Marian Gaborik and Marian Hossa and having to open the tournament by playing back-to-back games against the Czech Republic and Russia.

"It’s a huge win for us," said Slovakia captain Zdeno Chara, who waged a night-long physical war with Ovechkin. "It’s a tough schedule. When you play back to back against such great teams as the Czechs and Russia, it’s always exhausting. You’re playing within 24 hours in really hot conditions. The ice is probably not the greatest because there have been two or three games going on it. So it’s tough.

"But we found a way to win a game."

They found a way by riding superb goaltending from the Montreal Canadiens’ Jaroslav Halak, who stopped 36 of 37 Russian shots during the 60 minutes of regulation and the five of overtime, and then six of the seven he faced in the shootout from the likes of Ovechkin, Ilya Kovalchuk and Evgeni Malkin.

Ovechkin, in fact, shot three times -- scoring on his first -- because IIHF rules allow the same shooter to go as often as the coach desires after the first three shooters have taken their turns.

"It was crazy because, in NHL, they can only go once and here they keep going with same guy after the first three shooters," Halak said. "It was crazy to see. But lucky for us, we got the (victory)."

yes that was good!

it was amazing. the 2 man bob was pretty excellent too. i fear for the 4 man event, it could turn out to be a crashfest. that course is absolutely mental. on average 20mph faster than any other course in the world! they reckon the 4 man bob could hit 140 mph around that labyrinth / gold run corners.

what's their problem. why can't they just walk down the hill with some friends, enjoying the scenic view and the good company? why do they have to be such dicks about it? in fact why not just don't go up the hill in the first place and do something better with your time?

yeah they are real. and they have some sort of problem with hills and can't go down them right. maybe that's why their race isn't prospering because they can't go down hills properly and have to make some big deal of it.

Could American sports fans please stop chanting "U-S-A"? It really is very annoying indeed - as much I'm sure for a majority of Americans as it is for the rest of the world. I get the feeling that if I lived in the US I'd hate sport.

I think that curling might be THE most ridiculous sport known to man; however, the danish female team makes me feel funny in the pants. :o

I remember when the last winter olympics was on. There was a particular moment when I'd watched about 4 hours of curling where I though 'I really should get a job'.

I watched some skiing yesterday. Unfortunately, our telly's on the fritz so I've not watched much action.

curlings a good sport, it's so ridiculous you don't have to care when you lose.

however, as i learned the hard way..if someone hasn't heard of curling don't explain it to them, they'll think you're making fun of them

Slovaks beat defending champion Sweden 4-3; Canada next


VANCOUVER (AP) — Slovakia knocked defending Olympic champion Sweden out of the men's hockey tournament Wednesday night with a 4-3 victory in the quarterfinals.
Marian Gaborik, Andrej Sekera, Pavol Demitra and Tomas Kopecky scored for the Slovaks, whose superior team speed kept the slower Swedes at bay.
Sweden's Nicklas Lidstrom, who scored the winning goal in the championship game at the Torino Olympics, had his last shot stopped by Jaroslav Halak as time expired.

SUMMARY: Slovakia 4, Sweden 3

The Slovaks will play Canada on Friday night in the semifinals for a spot in the gold-medal game.

Sweden's Henrik Lundqvist, who had not allowed a goal before his game, let three consecutive pucks get past him in the second period. He finished with just 10 saves.
Halak made 26 saves for Slovakia.
Gaborik and Sekera broke open a scoreless game by scoring in a 37-second span midway through the second period, but the Swedes responded with their own pair of goals, also in a 37-second span, from Patric Hornqvist and Henrik Zetterberg.
Demitra then scored the goal late in the second period that gave Slovakia the lead for good, slapping a shot that Lundqvist didn't see because the goalie's view was obstructed. Kopecky made the score 4-2 by scoring off a rebound in the third period.
Daniel Alfredsson scored 38 seconds later to pull Sweden within a goal, but the Swedes fell short with an aging team that welcomed back 13 players from the 2006 Olympics. The game marked the end of an era for Sweden, which won't have Lidstrom or Peter Forsberg or coach Bengt-Ake Gustafsson back for the Sochi Games in four years.

It was so great to see Vancouverites not be cold and grumpy and distant today. So it takes a few beers before noon and the title of masters of the olympic universe, so what?
