Thanks for your reply, Knox. Please allow me to RESPECTFULLY answer some of the points you brought up:

1. You made reference to MY language and "MY MY MY" country. You've got it all wrong. This is not about ME, and it is not MY country. America is the country of all Americans. The vast majority of us speak English, and we want to be able to communicate with EACH OTHER. It's hard to do that when we don't have a common language.

2. You said I want them all to be like me, and I won't tolerate them speaking another language. Please try reading my original post again. As I said, I embrace diversity. I live in New York City, one of the most diverse cities you can find. Very few of my co-workers are American. It's one of the things I love about living here. And as far as I'm concerned, people can speak any language they want to. But if they live in America, they should know how to speak English.

3. As for Native American languages, what is your point? By "primary language," I meant the language most commonly spoken here now, not what was originally spoken here hundreds of years ago. At what point are we no longer responsible for the sins of our ancestors?

4. As for some people being bad at learning languages, yes, I'm sure there are some. Perhaps there's a way to make exceptions for such people.

5. Finally, I probably agree with your point about public transport, but unless you propose to eliminate individual driver's licenses completely, I don't see how that pertains to this discussion.

Can you elaborate on that? Maybe with some examples? I'm not the greatest world traveler, but it seems to me that the US is not monolinguistic. I discussed this with an Egyptian co-worker today, and he thought it was ridiculous that in America, when you use an interactive phone menu, you have go out of your way to specify if you want to continue in English.

If not, why don't you just let people take their lame driving tests in whatever language they want to because that's really none of your business.

How race could have anything to do with this is beyond comprehension, since any race you can name is represented by immigrants coming to America from countries where English is not the primary language. I think the whole idea of associating language with national identity, particularly in a country which is premised on being a nation of immigrants, only serves to obfuscate self-entitlement and laziness.
