You and demonrail are doing Performance Art for us. |

Hmmmm....or is it (Intent divided by Execution) squared? |

I lolled at this. Sometimes I come across something as "innocent" as a hose on the ground, and I lovingly observe it for a long time, not wanting to disturb it. A mushroom on a log. A tissue caught in the furnace vent. Water on a window. That hose is not a joke. Even though it might not move everyone. |

Money is Art. |
Quote:
ABSOLUTELY NOT. Is Night And Fog, or the "music" of Whitehouse beautiful? Some Art can/must! be abhorrent and sickening. |
Quote:
What Isn't Art? What causes no reaction whatsoever? Kenny G? Robert Bateman paintings? |

 |

If you hate something, and it makes you puke, it can be Art. Maybe even "good" Art. |
Quote:
I think most Art isn't formally presented as Art. "Pieces" are the tip of the iceberg. For example, the sound of the Air Conditioning, or, the action of twilight. |

And we are talking about it 90 years later. What he did was bigger than Sgt Pepper. |

And these are upsidedown fake mushrooms in a room. Where do you draw the line? ![]() |

But the General Public loves the show Friends and flock to Walmart. |

But why isn't mowing a lawn or doing the dishes Art? I've had otherworldly experiences while doing this. The colours of the grass in the late afternoon summer sun. The bubbles in the early morning winter light. |

Hahahaha....fuck I love you! |

Pollock changed my life. This is not a joke. |
Quote:
um well that depends on who you're with, no one i know owns an original pollock due to monetary issues but i do know people who have reproductions of his work or other abstract expressionist work on their walls, because they are appealed by the energy and atmosphere of the work and not necessarily because it's a pretty picture of something they know. it's more about structure and shape than it is about a subject. |
Quote:
But what has happened to this "more general audience" in the age of mass marketting? Art is more important than ever now. All Walmart addicts should be forced to view Godard films. |
Quote:
Oh Man...... I buy used Art books and cut Pollock out to frame. (He'd probably kill me for that.) Your post is ultra brainwashed / generalizing....whatev.....I'm genuinely angry at it, but I'll recover quickly.... "familiar" "pretentious" "average" "psued" "hyperbole" "poseurs" "money/sense" Goddammit!!!! |
Quote:
But why the FUCK must I be deemed elitist by the masses just because I love Merzbow, Godard and Dada? As I said, in this age of mass marketting, Art is more important than ever. |
Quote:
Again I ask, is Night And Fog beautiful? Was a lot of effort put into it? Is it Art? |
I'll stfu now.

Absolutely. Well, "can". Artwork does not need to be beautiful, in order to be skillful, concise, intricate, intense, or moving... or, art. What a crock. But I've no real interest in discussing art vs not. It is a non argument. |
Quote:
Who deemed you elitist? Why do you see elitism as a negative concept? Why do you care what they think? |
Elitism is not really a bad thing like Savage said.

Do you think we've hit a nerve with Skuj?
What at least some of you are saying, certainly not an uncommon thought, is that a certain artist, with at least tangential connections to da Yute, known for creating exact replicas of soup cans and brillo boxes, is not really an artist. Conceptually, just having the work described to you, Warhol, Pollock or even Van Gogh, might sound like child's work. But seeing the work in person has an entirely different effect (at least on me). I insist that the intent is the important part of an artistic experience. |
Beauty is in the eye of the apiarist
|
"beauty" is a self-determined factor.
whitehouse can be beautiful to someone. the last 5 minutes of MOTE are some of the most beautiful sounds I have ever heard ywt they are abhorrently ugly to many people I have played those sounds for. if a man finds beauty in contemplating the hose then that is meaningful, but it does not necesarily make the hose art. a murderer finds his mutilations of people beautiful, and would likely define them as his/her "Art" but does that one person;s definiton make it so? should art be something the collective decides? so many questions! |

UNCLEAN!!! UNCLEAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
More than once I've been in a museum and saw a chair or couch or an air vent grill or even a door and thought to myself, "I wonder who's piece this is."
|
me too
|
I've seen whole exhibitions where the drains were the best thing about it. Not quite the same thing, but definitely true.
|
LOL, sorry about last night. I got a bit excited. I'm not really angry.
Anyway, here's a Bateman. :) ![]() |
Ad Reinhardt put it best, I think
"Art is art, everything else is everything else." |
Funny story:
By pure coincidence, the Guggenheim was showing Richard Prince when I went there. Seeing the nurse series was quite enjoyable. But he also has a series of car hoods--particularly GTOs I think. In my neighborhood, I frequently walked past one of these hoods--spiffily done up in grey primer. I always wondered if there was some connection... |

I didn't think you were. I think its great that somebody has such an interest. |
