i have literally gone cheese mad recently.

sonicl 01.03.2007 07:07 AM

I went on a bit of a halloumi binge over Christmas. Not psychedelic in the least, but very nice anyway.

Could the psychedelic cheese thing be related to the idea that eating cheese before bed will give you weird dreams? That often happens to me.

Yes, I believe so. I know that all cheese contains certain stimulants that enhance the hypnagogic stage (a friend did his Psychology BA dissertation on this subect), and generally speaking, eating anything before bedtime will increase the REM stage of sleep (because your body's processing things, it has more stimulation than during 'lay' times).

But I read (somewhere, forgotten in a most convenient fashion) that because cheese is made in a related fashion to the process of putrefaction/ decay which makes mushrooms in nature, cheese, particularly of the Stilton types, where something non-milky is inserted as 'veins' into the cheese, can produce psychedelic elements.

Feta isn't something I'm terribly fond of, unless it's with a salad or something. In all honesty, I ignore it entirely unless I'm dining with my Greek friends, all of whom seem to be competing with Ireland for the title of 'biggest contribution to making guests fat' (with Bangladesh and Iran neck-and-neck for fourth place).

and i think psilocybin is the word you are after

That's utterly reprehensible. I'm quite, quite disgusted by that. Surely there's still McDonalds/ Burger King (etc) adverts on all year round? I think we, the cheese lovers, and the cheese companies (except for babybel, they can fuck right off) should pull together and storm parliament, demanding our rights to fine cheeses.

I've gone far too long without Roquefort. We had some in recently, sort of left it for a few weeks, and it went all watery and weird and had a taste that, quite literally, made me see God. I may have mentioned it once or thrice already in this thread.

Does anyone know of the alleged 'psychedelic' cheeses? I read somewhere that there are generally-available cheeses which contain similar properties to mushrooms (psycheglobin? [sp?]).

i do recall hearing something about certain cheese cultures that do that, i think there is something call ergot and it has a deriviative that can cuase hallucinations if taken in substantial amounts. we have a beer in australia that has it in it but it is shit beer and you would need to drink about 25 cartons

Obviously she hasn't heard that cheese is officially a junk food yet, as she bought me a present yesterday of a selection of cheeses containing English Cheddar, Stilton, Wensleydale with Cranberries, Brie and Double Gloucester. This is why I love her.

I found out today that the first film to be censored in Britain was an advert for Stilton which showed the micro-biotic activity of it. We, the cheese appreciators, must stand up against our non-cheese loving opressors. For your cheese-appreciating interest.

i know it might ruin my credibilility for future posts in this thread, but i actually like those little babybel things... then again, i guess it has to do with the fact that i had a lot of babybel as a child... at lunch at school, when we were going to some excursions with school... well, yes, that's certainly the reason why. same with vache-qui-rit, a nostalgy thing, i suppose...

tonight, i had some roquefort and camembert, and it was heavenly good... the wine wasn't crap either...

noumenal 02.11.2007 12:25 AM

Lysergic Acid is made from ergot. LSD was first snthesized during research on ergot.
I used to take Ergotamine (or something like that) for migraines years ago. It affects your blood vessels.

I don't know if ergot is in cheese.

sonicl 02.19.2007 08:48 AM

I've had some very disappointing Boursin with garlic and herbs recently. It doesn't seem to pack quite the punch that it used to.

Hip Priest 02.19.2007 12:49 PM

Just had a slice of Somerset Cricketer fom the fridge. Most pleasant.

krastian 02.19.2007 10:43 PM

Sometimes I live on string cheese.

kingcoffee 02.19.2007 11:08 PM

Dude, why is Mozzarella not on the list??????

I refer my honorable friend to the answer I gave some time ago: http://www.sonicyouth.com/gossip/sho...27&postcount=5

Anyway, if you ever get the chance to eat white stilton with mango and papaya in, my advice is sieze that chance.

king_buzzo 04.24.2007 01:31 PM

Dutch are crazy about cheese.

Hip Priest 04.24.2007 01:32 PM

Do you have a favourite cheese, king_buzzo?

It's a bit predictable, but Gouda is my favourite of the Dutch cheese.

king_buzzo 04.24.2007 01:33 PM

Not really. Maybe young goat chese or boursain (sp?) and some other one I dont know the name of.

Hip Priest 04.24.2007 01:35 PM

Goat cheese is lovely, and under-appreciated by the masses. Welsh goats cheese is often very nice.

king_buzzo 04.24.2007 01:40 PM

It is, young goat cheese is pretty cool with brown bread loafs.

Hip Priest 04.24.2007 01:42 PM

...with a bit of finely-chopped red onion, or maybe some fresh coriander.

sellouteater 07.29.2007 12:10 PM

i'm soooo hungry

pbradley 07.29.2007 12:16 PM

the goat cheese with garlic is the one of the few things I'll buy from Trader Joes. fucking tasty.

sellouteater 07.29.2007 03:22 PM

Bump

Hip Priest 07.31.2007 01:58 PM

Cooke some orange peppers tonight, stuffed with lots of mozzerella, mushrooms and courgette. Mmmm.

A friend has given us some lovely sheep-milk cheese.

total-trash 07.31.2007 02:06 PM

blue cheese and brie

jon boy 07.31.2007 02:06 PM

i really cant get into mozarella, it doesnt taste of anything and is really fattening. i like a good strong flavoured cheese.

i once had some cheddar with onion around the outside and it made my eyes water it was so strong.

Hip Priest 07.31.2007 02:18 PM

It's true that mozzerella tastes of almost nothing, but it becomes rather a tasty and pleasant thing when cooked.

jon boy 07.31.2007 02:19 PM

i have started to worship at the altar of halume.

Hip Priest 07.31.2007 02:23 PM

That's a sheep-milk thing, isn't it?

jon boy 07.31.2007 02:30 PM

i am not sure, all i know is that its delicious and good in salads and with stir fries. really a big fan of salads with a warm ingrediant.

pbradley 07.31.2007 02:31 PM

I have the rest of this goat cheese but no crackers to eat it with! Foul fate!

No problem. Put it on some slices of red pepper, sprinkle it with some black pepper or fresh herbs and grill it for a minute or two.

pbradley 07.31.2007 02:35 PM

I have none of that.

total-trash 07.31.2007 02:35 PM

this thread has made me want to make mozzerella sticks.

Shame. What about tortillas? You could make a pretty impressive quesadilla with some good goats cheese, I reckon.

jon boy 07.31.2007 02:42 PM

i had a very nice buritto in san francisco with some lovely cheese in it. got it from some place on mission near where all the banks and stuff are.

pbradley 07.31.2007 02:45 PM

Problem solved. One half of a sourdough roll with the inner fluff carved out. Tastey toughness with goat cheese goodness.

And I think I've been to that burrito place. Drunk. Of course, I could b wrong. Like I said, I was drunk.

jon boy 07.31.2007 02:49 PM

thats alright i was out of my mind anyway, seemed to fit in on mission.

pbradley 07.31.2007 03:04 PM

Ah, the absolute pleasure of finding a burrito place in a wandering drunk stupor.

jon boy 07.31.2007 03:06 PM

not as good as falafel or fish n chips haha.
