Well it's not a top 10'er, but it's close for me. I like it. I love the artwork too.

noisereductions 12.12.2014 10:30 PM

the artwork is great. And I DO get the Outkast vibe - but that's Krit in a nutshell anyway. I don't know. I like half of it but half bores me. It just feels like a good concept for an album but it's like an EP's worth of good shit and then filler. No disrespect. I think the dood is great. I'm just not feeling the LP.

Let it be known:

I do believe these are the most underrated, slept-on hip-hop albums of 2014:

Open Mike Eagle - The Dark Comedy

Black Milk - If There's A Hell Below

Severian 12.14.2014 05:17 PM

There's always way too much muck to trudge through... Good releases are always forgotten. But these two should have been a bigger deal.

Open Mike is clever and absurd, but skilled.
Black Milk never fails, and the fact that this album came out only a few days after I realized it existed means I was paying attention to the wrong shit.

Severian 12.14.2014 10:11 PM

Shit, new D'angelo just drops straight out of nowhere?! Goddamn! Maybe this will make up for Yeezy and Kendrick's MIA albums.

Or, more likely, it will make up for the Frank Ocean joint we've been waiting for since our balls dropped.

noisereductions 12.14.2014 10:48 PM

yeah I just read the D'Angelo drops this week. Can't wait. Wow.

BTW, sev - I'm gonna plan to do 52 Albums Of The Week in 2015. :)

Severian 12.14.2014 11:56 PM

👍 👍 👍

Severian 12.15.2014 12:00 AM

if you do it, I'll find a reason to keep doing it. Yeah, a lot of people may think that it's worthless to have a list of albums per year that you need to whittle down to a reasonable 50. But I think it's worth something to expose yourself to as much as possible. I'll be less likely to lose heart if you're in it with me.

louder 12.15.2014 04:11 AM

new D'Angelo is already out on iTunes and it's incredible. i swear it sounds a lot like a Bowie album.. but it's also circus-y, psychedelic and weird at parts too. i can tell D has been listening to Zappa and Beefheart. totally not what i expected from the title "Black Messiah" when i first heard it. wow.

Just picked it up. Huzzah for long lunches. I'm excited and also a little terrified. But your recommendation gives me confidence. Here we go!

Severian 12.15.2014 01:15 PM

Ok I totally get the Bowie thing. Totally. Bowie at the Beeb anyone?

It's only been minutes, but this is a dope record. Might have to dig out my copy of Voodoo, which hansnt been touched by human hands in at least 10 years.

noisereductions 12.16.2014 08:02 PM

Back in 2012, Wu-Tang Clan's Ghostface Killah and the LOX's Sheek Louch released a collaborative album as Wu Block. Now, they've announced a follow up LP called Hidden Gems. It's out January 20 via Nature Sounds, and features appearances from Wu-Tang/LOX affiliates such as GZA, Jadakiss, Masta Killa, Styles P, Cappadonna, Killah Priest and more.

noisereductions 12.16.2014 09:36 PM

so re-cap:

36 Seasons - 12/2014
A Better Tomorrow - 12/2014
Wu-Block - 1/2015
Ghostface w/ BBNG - 2/2015

Hey louder:

I am really fucking enjoying the new D'Angelo album. It's not even fair that it came out so late in the year! Too late for Rolling Stone or SPIN to even have a chance to include it in their year end lists.

It's not exactly the most market-savvy time to release one's first new album on 14 years. But D'Angelo pretty obviously doesn't give much of a shit about that kind of thing. I, however, will totally be revamping my list to include it.

Also, how are you feeling aboht the new J. Cole? I think it's the first record he's dropped that I genuinely *like*... The previous have basically just been a few likable tracks floating around in an ocean of skippable mediocrity.

But I'm quite surprised about 2014 Forest Hills... It's way better than I ever would have thought possible. Y'know?

yeah, D'Angelo seems too mature to care about those things. i do think it would be great if he promoted the album with some music vids though, as well as TV appearances, interviews, etc. but 100,000 sales first week for a soul record in 2014 is still pretty damn impressive, i suppose. it kinda baffles me that the new Nicki Minaj album (which is, by the way, pretty awful in my opinion) is expected to have higher sales, but oh well.

and yeah Cole finally made a good album.. shocking right? i just wish he didn't sing so much. also i found the last verse on "Fire Squad" pretty cringeworthy. like if you're gonna release an album with no radio singles, don't fucking whine about the grammy's on your record. i don't even disagree with his shots at white artists, but it just made him seem like a crybaby to me.

i truly can't stand how the grammy's don't even respect hip-hop as a music form, yet rappers give them more importance than anyone else.

noisereductions 12.19.2014 06:09 PM

new D'Angelo is really good. New J. Cole is better than expected. Woah all 3 of us agree on stuff!

CD's:

Belly soundtrack
Eminem - Shady XV
Mobb Deep - The Infamous Mobb Deep (dlx)
Nas - Illmatic XX

books:

Illmatic - from the 33 1/3 series.
Check The Technique Volume 2- I've read vol 1 multiple times.

and a Beastie Boys Check Your Head t-shirt!

louder 12.26.2014 02:26 PM

Run the Jewels 2 has topped every magazine list i've seen so far. it is a cool album.. however the praise it gets is shocking to me.

also, i can't see what's so good about that Zach De La Rocha verse. people act like that shit was so hot.. i didn't even know he was held in such high regard as a rapper. i've listened to it several times just to see what the fuss is all about, "i'm miles ahead of you, you can sip my bitches brew" is a nice line, but come on..

louder 12.26.2014 02:40 PM

Pitchfork described El-P rapping about wanting his wife to wear a thong as an act against misogyny. they even compared the album's production with FUCKING SONIC YOUTH. damn, are they for real??

i get why people like this album, just can't help but feel like there's one big circle jerk going on.

louder 12.26.2014 03:01 PM

Quote:

On the whole, RTJ2 is El-P’s most accessible and rangy production to date and he’s hit a stride that recalls Sonic Youth in 1987 or Animal Collective in 2004, the point where a celebrated noise terrorist starts to embrace and challenge their audience rather than simply testing their patience.
lol. he probably thought this was such a clever thing to claim.

fucking clown. you guys were on point when you called Pitchfork "satire and they don't even know it".

noisereductions 12.26.2014 07:08 PM

circle jerk or not, RTJ2 prob my fav album of the year anyway man.

Pusha T Promises 'Amazing' New Album in Spring 2015
http://www.rollingstone.com/music/ne...-2015-20141222
Quote:

Some people are getting ready to take the rest of the year off – but not Pusha T, who's hard at work on his second solo album, King Push, the follow-up to 2013's My Name Is My Name. "Aw, man, I'm working on it feverishly," says the Virginia MC. "It’s amazing. I feel like the sound will be second to none. And of course you already know the raps will be smacking people all left and right. I’ve been working on it constantly."

Pusha says he plans to release the album in spring 2015. In the meantime, fans can get an idea of where he's headed from his killer new Kanye West-produced single "Lunch Money," which just got a video. "I dropped 'Lunch Money' to show how far out me and 'Ye are going to go, just sonically," he says. "Now, I feel like people don’t know where the hell I’m going to go on the next record. And that’s where I want them to be."

He laughs, then adds: "'Unorthodox' has become synonymous with Pusha T’s music, back to records like 'Grindin'.' Everybody’s gonna be really locked in and shocked to see how I’ve raised the level of musicality from My Name Is My Name to King Push.

9 tracks and it comes w/ the movie on DVD. A nice set.

Severian 12.27.2014 08:36 PM

louder- you're right. Zach De La Rocha receiving praise as an emcee in a true hip-hop context is just way too hard to swallow. Everyone pretty much gets the fact that RATM was goddamn fraudulent at this point... shameless "Activist" role-players, raging against the exact machine that spit their records out.

I can't believe that Rocha moment on Close Your Eyes... is getting attention of any kind, or being hyped as anything *other than* the only downright bullshit moment on that kickass album. Zach De La Rocha is a joke. Yeah, this verse may be the best thing he's ever done... and RTJ2 is certainly the best project he's ever been involved with. But COME THE FUCK ON!!!

I haven't really heard anything about Rocha's contribution, so I'm just taking your word for it. It seems like the kind of thing that would happen in this braindead pop culture era.... Killer Mike and El-P create a universally revered masterpiece, and Zach De La Motherfucking Rocha is the one swimming in "OMGs" ... fucking christ.

It is a great album though. I prefer it even to Shabazz Palaces' Lese Majesty. It's more interesting. That's sayin' some shit.

noisereductions 12.28.2014 10:45 AM

I don't really get why the De La Rocha verse is getting much talk, it's nothing amazing. But it's nothing awful either.

I like the "run the jewels fast/fuck the slow-mo" lines that get looped.

louder 12.28.2014 12:08 PM

looks like i'm starting to give up to the hype and really embrace this album.

i've come to realize it's truly their victory lap after dropping consistent albums year after year (R.A.P. Music, Cancer 4 Cure, the first Run the Jewels album).. damn.

noisereductions 12.28.2014 12:40 PM

lulz
