Since we're playing this game . . .

KISS ME DEADLY (1955) -- One of my favorite noirs. Worth it for the explosive ending alone.

demonrail666 11.11.2012 05:59 PM

I really must rewatch that. I saw it again recently and was surprised that I couldn't get into it but I'm convinced I just wasn't in the right mood. Too much about it makes it irrational that I should suddenly not like it. Although I'll always prefer the sheer simplicity of Detour.

Shocking to admit but I've never actually seen that. I've always overlooked it because I always thought it was made in the 'wrong' era for a noir. Stupid I know.

Bande à part

I'm starting to think I prefer movies that've been influenced by Godard far more than I do his own films.

I just saw this, and it was great. Does anyone know if this is an official promo or just fan art?

demonrail666 11.14.2012 02:59 AM

It looks like fan art to me. I wanna see Skyfall. Fingers crossed I'll enjoy it more than I did Quantum of Solace.

Toilet & Bowels 11.14.2012 03:53 AM

I saw Skyfall, it was ok, but I don't really like Bond films very much.

Rob Instigator 11.14.2012 08:51 AM

I cant wait for skyfall. I really dug quantum of solace, even though people were down on it.

ilduclo 11.14.2012 05:01 PM

saw the Future (Miranda July). I thought it was really good, ms Ild fucking hated it.

Yeah, I'm not sure how or why, but QOS really did not do a damn thing for me. I can't even remember what it was about. I'm still dying to see Skyfall, but having forgotten half the of the story so far.

I remember some explosions, some extreme walking, a machine gun, the word revenge, and some sand, plus a marketing campaign that probably raised my expectations too high. I loved Casino Royale because it was shockingly dark for Bond, and my expectations were low going in.

I had completely given up on Bond and Casino was like a Chris Nolan reboot. Quantum was no Dark knight though.

Severian 11.14.2012 07:47 PM

Tell me, folks who saw Skyfall: will I need to remember Quantum to "get" Skyfall? Should I rewatch it with an open and sober mind, or should I just go and enjoy some explosions again?

the two aren't really related, quantum isn't brought up at all

It's that very darkness that I really don't like about the Daniel Craig movies. Not saying they should revert back to the all out comedy of the Roger Moore era but I do think they've lost quite a lot of their sense of fun in the last couple of movies.

I only really liked Cronenberg when he was making his low budget horror movies. I haven't seen a lot of his more recent stuff but if you're saying Cosmopolis is an improvement on those, I'll definitely steer clear.

Rob Instigator 11.15.2012 12:14 PM

what's cosmopolis about? Brooding wealthy vampires?

as a result of this thread i was trying to remember if i ever saw casino royale and i went to my netflix account and saw i had given it 2 stars (out of 5). all i recall is a lot of running and ultraviolence. explosions. bla bla. so i don't expect much from the sequels.

dammit, man! you didn't like a history of violence or eastern promises?

i really really really wanna see cosmopolis. but again, will my craptastic town have a screen devoted to it? who knows.

ps-- haaaa haaaaa! it was released last year!!! yeah-- i live in a nuclear wasteland.

oh, i meant the future. now it's streamable on netflix.

as for cosmopolis, i see nothing. maybe next year i'll rent it.

meanwhile, i think i'm gonna go kill myself a little.

demonrail666 11.16.2012 03:45 AM

I've always had problems with Don De Lillo's dialogue but on the written page it feels more acceptable than when it's actually spoken in a film. Robert Pattinson especially is just not good enough an actor to pull it off. For a billionaire wizzkid genius he seems nothing more than baffled by the things he's saying (and I refuse to buy into any 'but that's intentional' arguments). Things only improve (slightly) towards the end, when Paul Giamatti turns up. Otherwise, and I usually hate this term, it all comes across as being a bit pseudo intellectual.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off

h8kurdt 11.17.2012 07:09 PM

The Master

Honestly I thought it was brilliant. Both Phoenix and Hoffman were just incredible and deserve every award they can get.
Two scenes stand out for me. The 'interrogation' scene where Phoenix is told not to blink and also the prison scene. For the both of them I could feel myself getting more and more drawn into the film.

demonrail666 11.17.2012 07:56 PM

seeing it next week. very excited.

demonrail666 11.18.2012 05:53 PM

The Colour of Money

Absolutely love this. I'm wondering if it might be Scorsese's most underrated film.

demonrail666 11.19.2012 07:06 AM

Honestly, you should check out The Colour of Money. It'd make a fantastic double bill with Hard Eight. They're uncannily alike except that instead of John C. Reilly you get the far less sympathetic, far more in your face Tom Cruise, and Paul Newman plays a great 'Sydney' kind of character. Seriously, give it a try. I'd be really surprised if you don't end up liking it.

Regarding Cosmopolis, I dunno, I'm just not a fan of Cronenberg, I guess. His films always seem really cold to me. In that sense, he sort of reminds me of Kubrick, except Cronenberg doesn't even have Kubrick's visual flair.

Anyway, just watched ...

The Breakfast Club

A Few Good Men

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 11.20.2012 03:50 PM

Prometheus..

Why are robots always trying to inevitably destroy humanity? Its getting old and it hasn't even happened yet!

demonrail666 11.21.2012 02:37 PM

The Town

I didn't have any big expectations with this but ended up really liking it. It's all pretty obvious but done very well. Although any film with this kind of storyline would have to be atrocious for me not to at least quite like it.

... because humanity doesn't understand them yet (not completely;not THAT kind of robot) and because that's what we-- or, white-ass pop culture, do with things we don't understand... we vilify them.

Seriously, I think it's probably universally instinctual. if I knew anything about the way Africa, or the Navajo, viewed robots/artificial intelligence in general, I'd be tempted to make such a claim. but it's true all over the world and throughout history in terms of the way people view and interpret the actions and motivations of any person, thing, culture, trend, or idea that falls outside their own understanding.

Then again, it may just be that "nice" robots/aliens might just be boring as fuck. ;) I mean, there's Robocop, and.. hmm. The kid from AI? Naw, even he was super creepy in a way. lol!

rashomon

best thanksgiving movie ever mhuaaahaahaaahaaa

seriouly this is like the 3rd time i watch this movie and i couldn't remember the actual story. but now i do. one needs notes to track all the bullshit going on.

anyway, good stuff. the long takes make me space out at times and start thinking of other things, and sure there's much better kurosawa movies, but still... his love of photographing cloth (see: aldous huxley's peyote books) is as evident here as it was in ran. gorgeous. even if the restored version has some contrast issues (maybe from the original?). eh, i ramble...

Biutiful

Jesus Christ. I wasn't expecting this to be a laughfest but what a total downer. Brilliant in its way but far too grim for me to ever want to see it again.

!@#$%! 11.24.2012 10:28 AM

fuckin shit, i watched "two escobars" yesterday.

it's part of an ESPN series called "30 on 30"

hot damn, people. this is good shit. dark as fuck, but really good.

Jackie Chan movies never disappoint. Some parts really made me laugh....Jackie sitting on a bike with no seat.....random close up of a guy and he whispers "please help me"

Yeah...cool movie.

You've seen the Hustler, right? Far better film in my opinion.

demonrail666 11.29.2012 06:36 AM

I have seen the Hustler and I do prefer it but that doesn't take anything away from The Colour of Money.

Last couple of days watched

The Fighter

I enjoyed it. It's all a bit obvious but saved largely by a really good cast.

The Hurt Locker.

Brilliant film.
