Well. That explains why I had such a hard time identifying her. Thing is I Googled it, so I’m not the only one whose made the mistake.

Goddammit.

Anyone been watching this? I've just finished episode 5 of the ten there are and it really is something else. The interviews with people from both the North Vietnamese and American soldiers are definitely the highlights.

Just reminds you how much of a fucking mess the whole thing was. With all this, it still impresses me that the Labour government at the time refused to send significant troops there. Full well knowing how much of a cluster fuck the thing was, and also how much worse it was going to get.

But yeah, if you haven't seen it I'd recommend it highly.

oh hell yeah ive been looking forward to it but it's a little inaccessible at the moment-- they've been charging 50 bucks to "pre-stream it" last i heard

once it's up free somewhere i'll watch it

--

eta: it's now streamable from the pbs website! but i can't stream much at home haaa haa haaa. (this is why i can't watch football). primitive tech! i'll wait for the dvd to hit the library.

demonrail666 10.13.2017 10:51 AM

Utterly mindblowing. Doesn't get much better than watching the episode covering the 4th dimension after a morning spent reading Lovecraft's 'Through the Gates of the Silver Key'.

Yes, this was a very enjoyable watch. Perspectives from soldiers on both sides really made it impactful as hell. And I know people around here sometimes can easily shit on NIN type of stuff, but I really thought the Reznor/Ross soundscapes fit pretty nicely. I was a little concerned going into it about them contrasting tonally with the content, but I thought they did a solid job.

h8kurdt 10.13.2017 11:54 AM

I'll agree with the soundtrack. I'm not a NIN fan AT ALL but I've loved the soundtracks Reznor/Ross has done. The Gone Girl soundtrack was especially great.

What I've loved about it is that their soundtrack isn't in your face. It's there, but subtly adding, rather than overwhelming the scene (see Hans fucking Zimmer)

h8kurdt 10.13.2017 11:55 AM

Anyway, off to see Blade Runner later. Will post my much anticipated review after.

ilduclo 10.13.2017 01:43 PM

read some reviews on Vietnam, so I skipped it. Don't need a rewrite of actual history. Too bad, I guess it has some good points.

What did they say? Cos I've seen a lot more great reviews than bad reviews for it.

Severian 10.14.2017 06:06 PM

GLOW on Netflix is off to a promising start. Put it on out of sheer boredom after exhausting Schitt’s Creek (hilarious), and I’m totally in.

Who was it who said Allison Brie was skinny as hell in this show? Because she is. Like... wow. Skeletal. But still gorgeous. Crazy that her boobs popped right out like 5 minutes into the first episode. Like a dream that comes true out of nowhere and in the weirdest of ways.

Ignore me. I’m going through stuff right now.

tw2113 10.14.2017 10:01 PM

First re-watch of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend season 2. I want to get caught up in preparation for season 3 that started last night.

Started re-watching Stranger Things in preparation for season 2 on Friday.

!@#$%! 10.22.2017 10:56 PM

about to finish the latest bojack and the last available season of the great british bakeoff on netflix.

bojack has been fucking brilliant— always— but they started getting experimental the past couple of seasons. so good. and it’s a fucking cartoon! ha ha ha ha

the great british bakeoff is nice and relaxing but man those comics are always trying to force the most horrible puns it’s embarrassing. nevertheless a pleasant soothing watch unlike anything with gordon ramsey in america (in the uk shows he acts more like a human being).

but anyway.

OH YEAH tried watching american horror story season 1 but it’s just too fucking disturbing. im already stressed out and then that shit just jolts me dead. i only have so much adrenaline.

Yeah, the new Bojack season was incredible and brilliant. New high for cartoons. Suck it, everything else!

And I feel you on AHS.

The third season is not as disturbing, and I actually love the plot and characters from that one. The second season is like... yikes.. wow. Discrubing as shit. So much rape!

gogologogolo 10.24.2017 11:53 PM

I'll be moving to California soon so I've been watching Silicon Valley lately. HBO show by Mike Judge (Beavis and Butthead, Idiocracy). Pretty good show, although it's starting to get a bit formulaic and I'm only on the second season. It's got a pretty sweet soundtrack.

Love Silicon Valley.

I’ve never see NGE. I think a lot of people have told me I NEED to watch it, but I haven’t.

I’m actually in between shows so for some reason I’ve been watching this god ducking awful Riverdale show on Netflix (I think it’s a CW thing).

It’s about Archie from Archie comics, and his whole gang, only it’s pointlessly dark and emo and thinks it’s Twin Peaks. Just really bad stuff guys. No clue why I’m watching it.

!@#$%! 10.26.2017 01:12 PM

so im sitting there with my wife watching outlander (season 1) which had so far been a rapy-but-not-rapy show because the poor woman is threatened by rape so very often and then! then on the last 2 episodes there’s actual rape and it’s man-on-man rape and it’s serial-killer level fucked uuuuuuup! and it takes forever and they keep going back to it. holy shit we couldn’t watch/ had to squint / turned down the volume. damn! true halloween horror. shit! brrrrr....

Dirk Gently season 2. Off to a GREAT start

Me too! Well, the Stranger Things 2 part... not the hipster part (though I’ll admit that is the category people lump me into, but that’s because they don’t know any better, and they figured snarky about music + clean cut = hipster, bah!)

Anyway, no spoilers, but what do you think so far?

I’m sick, and on my first days off in weeks, so I am binging without shame. On episode 6 right now. Don’t judge me. Had a long ass motherfucking two weeks.

I await season 3 now. I enjoyed it.

I've moved on to some binging a mix of The Young Ones season 1, Northern Exposure season 1, and all of Nickelodeon's "Roundhouse"

dirty bunny 11.01.2017 07:26 AM

gotta binge Stranger Things season 2 soon

and Dirk Gently

Severian 11.01.2017 07:16 PM

Stranger Things 2 not getting great reviews, but I think it’s the oversaturation effect. It’s goddann good. People always want to be in on the edgy thing and once it’s no longer edgy they bail. Fuck that noise.

Flawed, but GOOD season.

(Didn’t care for the Chicago episode though... made me cringe too much.)

tw2113 11.01.2017 10:08 PM

So much internet hype to live up to.

!@#$%! 11.03.2017 07:19 PM

just finished season 2 of OZ— damn damn damn! this show is so good. i can’t believe i missed it for so long. it must have been so epic to see it live back in the 90s when i came out. to me, outside of the 1.33 aspect ratio, it looks absolutely fresh and contemporary. ok, there are no cellphones, but i think this is the real groundbreaker that i thougth the sopranos was. fanfuckingtastic.

Severian 11.04.2017 10:19 AM

Mindhunter on Netflix. Cool so far, but the main dude is a debilitatigly wooden actor. Enjoying all the antiquated psychology talk.

Severian 11.06.2017 12:52 PM

Mindhunter was good.

On comp time right now, until tonight, so binging binging.

Sherlock season 4 ... heard bad things, but it was good. Quite good, if a bit overwrought at times.

Just watched the first episode of the Netflix show Atypical. It’s good and sad, about a young man on the autism spectrum trying to date.

Netflix makes good shows.

Peterpuff 11.06.2017 04:24 PM

Yes, Stranger Things 2 was great. It was exactly what it should have been, and if people expected different they are retarded.

I still need to check out Mindhunter, myself. Been hearing good things.

And the immature side of me adored American Vandal. I thought it was one of the best things ever. From a creative and "study-and-reproduce" perspective, the writing, acting, and wonderful take on the genre was pure genious, imo. Any time you can extend a dick joke into 8 clever episodes, you've got my attention.

And I had totally forgotten about OZ. They was a good show. I remember quite enjoying it when it was actually on, but don't remember half of the stories. I might have to go recheck that one.

Severian 11.06.2017 04:54 PM

I never watched Oz either. Never had HBO while it was actually on the air, and never really followed the hype enough to check it out after the fact. If it’s really as good as Symbols says, maybe I’ll stream it. Pretty sure it’s on Amazon Prime, along with the other non-current HBO shows.

Honestly I know virtually nothing about it. I thought it was a documentary for years. Still not entirely sure it’s not a documentary. Lol. So, yeah. I’m not cool.

!@#$%! 11.06.2017 07:10 PM

it is on prime and it’s fucking great

and it’s almost a documentary ha ha ha. well not quite— i’ve never been in prison so i couldn’t say. but it does feel very realistic.

one thing that’s great is that, being a late-20th century product, it’s not as graphic as the shit we get today. so while there is a fuckton on violence and gore and abuse, it’s mostly suggested rather than explicity performed the way it is these days. but it’s still edgy as fuck. very very very very good. damn! so good.

Good. The gratuitous violence and rape on, say, Game of Thrones, gets really old and really gross really fucking fast. Like, rape when the source material doesn’t call for it? Rape when the scene is supposed to be a scene of good old *consensual* incest? Too much. Fuck that shit.

I prefer the subtleties. The Americans gets that kind of stuff pretty goddamn pitch-perfect. Still shows enough to let you know what’s happening, but doesn’t seem to aspire to be smut.

Ahh, The Americans. :)

Severian 11.07.2017 10:56 AM

Atypical is very good. Netflix is putting out a lot of good stuff. Not As all around, but Glow was great, Stranger Things 2 was great, Mindhunter was great, Atypical was great... solid stuff.

Watched the first half of episode one of That “American Crime Story” show about O.J. Simpson made by the American Horror Story dudes.

Ross from friends is in it and ridiculous looking as Rob Kardashian. John Travolta is even more ridiculous looking and acting as Bob Shapiro. Not sure why it got so much praise. Looks like a goddamn cartoon. Maybe it’ll shape up.

Severian 11.07.2017 11:34 AM

Fucking weird watching this shit. I remember watching this shit unfold on television. White Bronco and whatnot. Very strange thing to dramatize, but I suppose it’s in keeping with the fascination we have with true crime. Fucking oddballs though.

Have any of you seen this? Compared it to your memories of the incident? Is it not weird AF?
