seriously tho, new Aesop Rock is his best since Labor Days probably.

So Death Grips have a new album out.. are y'all planning to give it a listen?

I tend to listen to all their albums as they drop. But I never end up sticking with them. I'm a pretty casual "fan" - more I find THEM more interesting than the music itself. HEY, to go back to the Madlib talk for a second, I think maybe I worded things wrong. What I was trying to say was that I'd be so much more excited if he'd announce a new YNQ-related album than another hip hop collab. He hasn't dropped one since High Jazz which was part of the Medicine Show series. It's been a longtime. And as fans of Yesterdays Universe & High Jazz may know from the liner notes, there are a lot of unreleased YNQ albums out there. Heck, the Jahari Massama Unit album w/ Keriem Riggins was announced wayyyy back and still hasn't dropped. For the record, MY first exposure to Lib was via Blue Note's compilation, The New Groove. :) |

Lil Uzi Vert. That pretty much says it all right there. What the hell kind of moniker is that? "I'm a rockstar?" Who fucking says that? He'll be gone in a flash. |
Chance 3, Tomorrow Bitches! :)

I liked Government Plates and the Money Store best. Some of their music kind of sickens me after repeated listens, but I can't say I'm not sort of into that. Pharmakon does the same thing to me, as do a number of noise and drone artists whose work I love. But I agree that Death Grips are often more interesting conceptually than they are musically. But I hear this new one features guest appearances from Tera Melos, so I'm gonna have to hear it at some point. And they have been responsible for some seriously badass tide shifts in the periphery of pop music. For example, skme of the best moments on Yeezus were clearly influenced by them. Same with Run the Jewels and the last Shabazz Palaces album. As for Madlib... I am pretty much down with anything that has anything to do with him. I'd love to hear more YNQ, more Strong Arm Steady, etc. He's just a master craftsman. He's almost on a level with Dilla at this point.... but, of course, not quite. ;) |
I agree w/ you on Death Grips regarding Yeezus, RTJ, etc.
Personally - PERSONALLY - I'm a bigger Madlib fan than Dilla. No disrespect. Just I feel like I follow Madlib much closer, pretty much for the past nearly 20 years. |
Chance 3 is officially titled "Coloring Book"..

Jeremih & Francis & The Lights) 04 D.R.A.M. Sings Special 05 Blessings 06 Same Drugs 07 Mixtape (ft. Young Thug & Lil Yachty) 08 Angels (ft. Saba) 09 Juke Jam (ft. Favorite hip hop project so far this year.

Why so surprised? |
Dammit, louder you scooped me you bastard! ;)
I was gonna break this shit. Coloring Book... cool title. Very Chance the Rapper. I still want to call it Chance 3. I'm all kinds of hooked on that name, and have been ever since "Ultra Light Beam." But whatevs. I haven't had a chance to hear it yet because I've been running around like a madman all morning, and was up half the night writing a shit story. But I'm looking forward to it. |
Also really looking forward to hearing Kaytradana's Anderson Paak-featuring debut album, 99%.
|
I have been listening to what is ironically termed Trap-Soul
Jeremih - Oui https://youtu.be/VtcP0PFifpE Bryson Tiller - Don't https://youtu.be/d7cVLE4SaN0 (Htown's got me feelin all throwed......) Young Greatness - Moolah https://youtu.be/8NHerdv71w4 ha! |

This new Chance is very soulful and Gospel-y.. but it's also mashed with autotune and trap. So it's a mix of old and new. Cool as fuck.

I'm not sure if the Denzel Curry album from this year is really meh or I'm just losing interest in that type of hip hop..

What? He has a new album? Last one kinda sucked too. N64 was the shit though. |

Finally getting to it. I've gotta say... Unfortunately.... This is the first album to firmly grab me by the fucking balls and give me a shock to the heart and soul since THE LIFE OF PABLO. This is AWESOME. Fucking 'Ye and Chance are the Batman and Robin of hip hop. I like this better than untitled unmastered. "No Problem" is the best track Lil WYne OR 2 Chainz have appeared on in for Fucking ever. This is some exuberant, joyous, heavenly ass shit, and it's EXACTLY what I needed. This, like TLOP, is fucking heroin for the soul. 2nd best album of the year. Sorry Bey. |
I'm glad you're enjoying it so much! I do like it better than untitled unmastered as well.

Who said you were a hater? Of anything other than TLOP, that is ;) |

It's the goddamn definition of off the goddamn chain!!! My gut reaction is to say it's better even than Acid Rap, which I believe is among the best albums (I'm not calling it a mixtape, not when it's THAT good) of the decade. The first 4 songs are just fucking non-stop brilliance. It's like he's actually beating me over the head with awesomeness. In this, it reminds me a great deal of TLOP, which I think was an obvious source of inspiration for this. But it also has some of the most exuberant and ecstatic beats and production that have appeared on a major project since Gradu-fucking-ation. (Really, tell me "No Problem" doesn't remind you of "The Glory" ... or at least bring it to mind..) Not saying it's an imitation. I'm saying it's fucking BEAUTIFUL. Part of me wishes Chance would "sell out" and get a record deal, because he's the only rapper I've ever encountered who I truly believe could be another Kanye. But he's on his own path, and he's certainly a shot-caller. This record makes me bounce back and forth between elation and tearfulness the same way Pablo does. It's SO MUCJ better than I ever expected, and I was expecting pretty awesome shit, so that's saying a lot. And the record covers so much ground, sonically and stylistically. It's got gospel, it's got a little trap, it's oozing soul and there are streaks of jazz and EDM and neo-soul and rock and pop and .... Blah! This is what I think is missing in so much of today's hip hop. Positivity, fun, chaos, goofiness, variety. This is what I want to hear. It's like Chance made the anti-VIEWS. A colorful, vibrant album about his home town, but instead of floating around inside his own brain (like Drake does in his asshole), it's like Chance is casting flood lights outward, onto the people of the city and beyond, out to rest of the world and into space and into heaven. It's just incredible. I can't say enough about it, really. |
Great post and comparsion, Sev!
Chance AMA on reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/hiphopheads...is_out_ask_me/ He said that the tape will be available for free everywhere in less than two weeks! Go Chance!! |
I raised an eyebrow when I saw Lil Yachty and Justin Bieber in the tracklist, but they surprisingly killed their features. With all the shit we gave Lil Yachty in the last page, I must give him props where it's due.
|
And don't even get me started on that Jay Electronica verse.. one of the absolute BEST rappers in the world.
|
Coloring Book is one of the most uplifting albums I've EVER heard in my entire life, up there with Exile from Main St., Songs in the Key of Life, Discovery and Graduation.. saving people from suicide type of shit. Y'know?
Whenever that Kirk Franklin song is on, I just have a BIG smile on my face. |
"Kanye's best prodigy, he ain't sign me but he proud of me"
No doubt. |
Common announced a new album!
|
That track sounds like a freestyle. At least the verse.
I just love Chanc's cadence and vocal spi. I love it when his voice cracks and it sounds like he's laughing, crying, and maybe even getting ready to scream in someone's face, all at once. In this era of largely bullshit trend hopping scuzz rapper, Chance really stands out. He's someone I can't help but root for. And this is the best goddamn "mixtape" that's dropped in I don't know how long. I can't think of anything that surpasses it. |

Highest score this year, along with the new Radiohead (which I think they overrated a bit). Well deserved. |
