The initial question "Is Donald Trump really a serious contender for the Republican nomination?" is certainly moot at this point (as Rob said, I'd say he has a pretty good shot), but at the same time, seeing that question posed that way is a constant reminder of how bizarre and alien this new American reality is. So, fuck.. change the thread, kill the thread, keep it going, who cares? But it would be counterproductive to abandon the conversation altogether.
As I've said, I have precious few people in my "real life" with whom I can talk openly about this, and this thread has been helpful to me, has helped me process and grieve and given me an outlet for the incessant bitching that is in my nature. the BIG problem with these articles are that they don't look at how self-serving and exculpatory the people are being. I (used to) work with just the type of folks in the article. And, since I am white and blue eyed and don't talk a bunch, they generally felt free to express themselves. And, what the majority of them wanted was to see a white, male, gun owning society. That and tax cuts. Peel back the onion (I was going to say something else :rolleyes: ) and you'll find just that.

I hear you. I work with people like this too. What's more, I cover school districts that are filled with high school teachers who think it's OK to spout their political opinions to their students, even if the smarter ones do it with some measure of subtlety.

In all the talk about what Hillary got "wrong" and what Trunp got "right" in reaching the American people, we can't blind ourselves to the fact that many of the people are extremely limited in their thinking. In-group biases are a fact of life, and I think this article (the Newsweek one) acctually does a fairly good job of illustrating this. We hear people unabashedly claiming that they want fewer "Hispanics" in their town.

I get that Hillary didn't run an ideal campaign, and as Symbols had said (in this thread or maybe in the "funny" one) it is a mistake to simply write-off Trump and his supporters as ignorant or bad people... but it's also a mistake to pretend as though ignorant and bad people were not part of what made this happen.

people vote their perceived self-interest. that perceived self-interest may include some measure of racialism but i'm not buying that it's the end-all-be-all of the self-interest calculus. guns may be a part of it too. but i believe economics is the biggest one.

From what I can gather the most immediate casualty of Trump is Merrick Garland, Scalia's intended replacement under Obama. Garland's appointment has been deadlocked in the senate, and a lot of people want Scalia's replacement to be reflective of the new administration rather than the old. Also Garland is a DC'er, and having him around wouldn't be in compliance with "draining the swamp."

I'm pretty sure the writing's on the wall on that issue. Doubtful the senate will speed things up for Obama's pick. Why would they?

Then there's the issue of the age of the sitting justices. They're in charge of their own retirement, but two key liberal voters and one Republican who has pissed off the GOP are getting up there.
