>no Marshal Mathers LP on that list

yeah, good point. although i dislike Em as an artist, MMLP is a good album. i just never really feel like listening to it anymore. i don't dig his subject matter at all. i realized he's some sorta gateway rapper until you find the better stuff. i do like his more mature, slightly Pac influenced songs (The Way I Am, Like Toy Soldiers, When I'm Gone, Mockingbird, Renegade, etc..), but think he's incapable of crafting a perfect full-length LP. sorry.

nice list, viewtiful. Return of 4Eva is the quintessential car music.

I think in a couple of years people will come to rank it among the best the south has ever given us. I usually get more flack for Flockavelli, but as far as I'm concerned its no different than including a Black Flag or Circle Jerks album in your rock top 25, I feel like too many people have these inflated expectations of rap.
What, they can't just be loud and obnoxious too?

Great point about Ghost, the even better part is that none of us are wrong. Hell just about any of Ghost's albums could reasonably be someone's favorite (other than Big Doe Rehab or More Fish I guess... although those would just be more peculiar than outright wrong)

I can't be the only one... be honest with yourselves now.

i'm afraid you are. lol. Quest Tribe's jazzy production sounds fresh even to this day. can't see why anyone wouldn't enjoy Midnight Marauders.

I'm waiting for history to finally discredit the entirety of Ice Cube's discography as sheer bullshit exploitation of street culture for profit and producers like Dr Dre as being old-school, record label industry head hunters. No respect for that shit yo..

Severian 05.16.2012 04:16 PM

Dammit. I still haven't done this. Stop bumping it and reminding me of my laziness.

batreleaser 05.16.2012 08:47 PM

pretty much every Killer Mike album is amazing. I can't wait to hear his collaboration with El-P.

Ice Cube and Bomb Squad's Amerikkkaz Most Wanted would be on my list too.

I think they are good, but vastly overrated by people with a narrow definition of good hip hop.
I acknowledge that I listen to some shitty hip hop, but I think that the way alot of people treat hip hop is the equivalent to acting as if Bob Dylan and John Lennon are the only rock artists worth listening to.

louder 05.17.2012 03:02 AM

obviously cool lil weirdos like Juvenile, Master P, Lil B, Waka Flocka & Gucci Mane got classics. they might not be able to rap on the same technical level as Eminem, but artistically they're so much better IMO.

i think it's newbies to hip-hop/music in general who fail to realize this. writing them off completely just makes them look ignorant and narrow minded. i mean let's be reality, in 2012 it's already safe to claim that Based God is the hip-hop equivalent of Captain Beefheart & Sun Ra.

Rob Instigator 05.17.2012 10:00 AM

You lost me at Master P

an evening with viewtiful 05.17.2012 10:24 AM

Master P, to me, is the hip hop equivalent of watching a Roger Corman movie. Its loud and dumb with little to no meaning, but I'm having fun anyways.

Rob Instigator 05.17.2012 11:16 AM

Life's too short for so much "loud and dumb"

dood Midnight Marauders has been my favorite hip hop album since about the week it was released. I don't feel like you'd say that I have a narrow definition of hip hop?

an evening with viewtiful 05.18.2012 12:09 PM

Oh no, not at all. I'm referring to people who act like A Tribe Called Quest are literally the only rap worth listening to, I'm sure you know the type. Also, I'm being slightly contrarian
I should have been more careful with my statement.

an evening with viewtiful 05.18.2012 12:13 PM

I love that my list got me negative rep.
Keep masturbating to your Immortal Technique albums Mr.Keep Popping Pimples

louder 05.18.2012 12:20 PM

this year is so good for hip-hop. i really like the new albums by Ab-Soul and Killer Mike.

new Curren$y and K.R.I.T dropping at the same day (June 5th), should be the highlight of the year so far.
i'm hyped as hell, bro. both Pilot Talk and Return of 4Eva were incredible.

also, let's not pretend that "The Vent" doesn't put anything Immortal Technique has ever written to shame.

noisereductions 05.18.2012 01:34 PM

I don't think I've heard a 2012 hip hop album yet. Haha.

You should do a weekly hip-hop thread, louder. I know there's a general one already, but I think a lot of is would like to see one with a hip-hop focus. You're the wo/man for the job.
