where did fugazi get their name?

Everyneurotic 05.22.2008 10:43 AM

ian was reading a book about vietnam at the time, and the term came popping in a lot, so he liked it. it was used for a situation of extreme trouble.

he found out what it meant literally when they toured singapour or one of such countries, a fan told him it meant "fucked-up, got ambushed, zipped in".

Rob Instigator 05.22.2008 10:44 AM

ahhh! coool, like other military terms

FUBAR - fucked up beyond all recognition

The Warlocks, after having had too much confusion in the local scene over another established band with the same name, decided to change their name. The group sat down together, smoked some DMT and attempted to go through the dictionary for ideas. however, the way the story goes, no body could read a word of this dictionary, every page was all blurry to everyone, they tried but alas, nothing. And then, jerry, as they were turning the pages, noticed one word standing out, glowing even, clear and bright, "Grateful Dead" and suddenly it was the only word that any of them could see, and so they all saw it as a sign.

"Pop music, in fact, seems to be an OED weakness. On March 10, the online version added the proper noun "Deadhead" to denote a fan of the Grateful Dead-nearly 10 years after the band's lead guitarist, Jerry Garcia, died."

Melvins-after a co-worker (who everyone hated) of King Buzzo's at a local supermarket

Minor Threat-they were young, of small physical stature, therefore a "minor threat" to society

Bad Brains-after a Ramones song

Dead Kennedys-supposedly meant to express the "death of the American Dream"

Neu!-German for "new"

the U-men-supposedly from an Alfred Jarry peom

Pere Ubu-from the main character of Alfred Jarry's play "Ubu Roi"

myth.

there's no clear claim to their name's origin, but hr and dr know had claimed that bad means good and brains means intellect; they wanted a band with a positive message that could make you think.

copper 05.22.2008 03:16 PM

i'm pretty sure Big Black is called after the short story of Big Black who was as the name says big and black and he raped a woman.

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 05.22.2008 03:19 PM

no big black is just a name to sound imposing

Rob Instigator 05.22.2008 03:21 PM

albini has said that he wanted to sound as menacing as possible for his extremely virulent and conforntational band, and that in america, the words BIG BLACK scare more people than anything

The Jesus and Mary Chain:

The band has said it was taken from an offer on a breakfast cereal packet, to send away for a gold Jesus and Mary chain.

Rob Instigator 05.22.2008 04:14 PM

I wonder where they looked to find their tepid wack-ass sound?

copper 05.22.2008 04:14 PM

^ hmm that might be more true than what i said. (pookie)

Pookie 05.22.2008 04:18 PM

Cheap Trick got their name by asking a Ouija Board.
