no but houses/apartments break down on a regular basis and you need to pay a plumber to fix the sewer or patch up the roof or etc.

not doing it in a building could potentially make you liable to the neighbors-- say, if theres an electrical fire or a flood or something.

insurance won't pay if you're found negligent.

i dont know what kind of setup you've got (if there are condo fees or what not) but check & doublecheck.

Cantankerous 06.30.2008 03:28 PM

no fees, but i'll probably have to pay a lot of fucking money in property taxes.
i don't know what kind of house/apartment you're accustomed to but i would suggest moving out if shit keeps breaking like that.

me? no im happy where i am. the previous tenant tore up the place so i got something that's still being "debugged" but at a very good rate.

but shit wears out. trust me. every property owner knows that.

Cantankerous 06.30.2008 03:33 PM

fortunately i'm good at fixing shit because i do NOT want creepy asses in my house getting dirt from their boots all over my oriental rugs nor do i want to pay them to do so.

the other day the plumber needed to come & fix some pipes.

it cost the owner $2.5K. they had another quote for $4K for the same job. that's in new mexico. for new york, price double.

your "property" is now a baby you'll have to take care of.

congratulations, baby mama! :D

Yeah, plumbing and electricity are bad news if you're doing it yourself.

Alex's Trip 06.30.2008 04:49 PM

Never been. I'd love to one day. Even on a family vacation, where I'd have to do really touristy stuff. But that isn't ideal.

screamingskull 06.30.2008 04:54 PM

I have been twice now, in February 2005, and October 2006. I am going again with my art school in February 2010.

It's lovely, i could see myself living there for a couple of years, but no longer than that.

my point exactly

you should have seen what happened when the sink backed up in my old dc apartment. the neighbor above dumped a shitload of rice on the garbage disposal which ended up getting clogged UNDER my sink. then when anybody from 3 floors above would open the sink, MINE would overflow.

a shit night i tell you. the super fixed it right away, and changed the pipes the following day, but i still missed a stereolab show i had tickets for.

Never put orange peels in the garbage disposal. Apparently they'll end up in your shower.

Cantankerous 06.30.2008 06:07 PM

you guys have got a lot to learn.

there are a lot of things you shouldn't put in a garbage disposal.

THAT WAS NOT MEEEEEEE

read well you fool

it was a NEIGHBOR who lived above me-- there were 3 possible culprits

i lived at the bottom floor, right before the pipe CURVED so i had to eat the problem created by OTHERS.

you understand?

shit happens. will happen to you. wish all you want, still will happen. like everyone else.

so cover your bony ass within reason is what im saying

Cantankerous 06.30.2008 06:13 PM

i already quit my job here because it sucked and the pay was even worse. i really like it here. it's so much better than where i lived before. i, also, like that i don't have to drive everywhere to get around.

but to put it simply: "This determination in review by the court of appeals will now permit the eviction of the entire number of tenants of any residential stabilized building by any landlord making the claim of a desire to take the entire building as a his or her personal residence . It is only required that this landlord live in the building exclusively for 3 years ; thereafter he or she may dispose of the building as he or she desires . There is of course no mechanism defined or established to assure that such landlord does actually live in the building exclusively for these 3 years."
