Jesus and Mary Chain.

I saw them in 1986 and they lived up to the hype.

Saw them again in 1998 (I think) and they were dull.

you fucking said it mells

atsonicpark 08.08.2008 09:35 AM

I pretty much like all Godflesh to an extent.

But yeah the earlier releases were a long more brutal.

SuperCreep 08.08.2008 10:00 AM

I still need to get more Godflesh. I only have Streetcleaner and it kicks my ass in more than any other album I own.

MellySingsDoom 08.08.2008 10:03 AM

Super Creep - their s/t 1st LP and "Pure" are keepers. Also of note is the Fall Of Because CD, "Life Is Easy" (Justin, Benny and Paul Neville's pre-Godflesh band, who really do sound like a cross between Whitehouse and Swans).

batreleaser 08.08.2008 10:04 AM

godflesh-hymns is amazing and thats thier last record. in fact, for different reasons streetcleaner and hymns are my favorite godflesh releases. broadrick is genius, i have never disliked anything hes been involved with. i like/love 'scum', godflesh, final, head of david, techno animal, god, ice, and the mighty jesu have all made fantastic music.

MellySingsDoom 08.08.2008 10:08 AM

I loves me Jesu - I don't have absolutely everything by them, but what I've heard is bliss city. Demonrail and I are MASSIVE fans of Head Of David up until "Dustbowl" (whence they turned into an awful comedy metal act) - I've got a live version of "I Am Roadkill" at home which kills. I used to see God a lot in London back in the day, both as a harsh noise-rock outfit, and as the "industrial-jazz" beast they later turned into.

Savage Clone 08.08.2008 10:09 AM

Echo and the Bunnymen
Verve
Flaming Lips
Ween
Jade Warrior
Metallica

Amon Duul II - good god, did they get bad after making some of the greatest music ever.

how can you not acknowledge the fact that 'appetite...' was one of the best rock n roll albums of all time. they were all amazing musicians, good songwriters, and wild as fuck junkies and alcoholics. they were everything great about rock n roll ever rolled into one band, the rolling stones of the 80s; amazing chops, the godlike lead guitarist (keith richards) in slash, the maniacal hip swiveling reckless frontman (mick) in axl, the mysterious rhythm guitarist (brian jones) in izzy, duff was thier bridge to punk rock and brought his hardcore esque bass to the table giving them a sense of dangerousness not seen in any of the lame ass hair bands of the time, and shit, every song on appetite is great. but of course, like the stones they eventually would become a parody of themselves. but i dont understand how people can not admit that they were a great band. whether or not you like them is fine, but you cant say they werent rockin as hell. no matter how wierd my taste in music has gotten, i still get chills from the opening riff to 'welcome to the jungle'.

god is fucking great. im a huge fan of kevin martin too. the guys done everything from extreme free jazz punk (he was a member of 16-17 for a short while, god) industrial hip hop (techno animal, ice), and his new project the bug, which is a miz of the industrial hip hop of which hes famous for, and dancehall, the shit is extreme music that you can dance to! awesome stuff. the new the bug record 'london zoo' is one of my favorites of the year. i suggest if anyone is into any of the aforementioned bands they check it out.

Appetite for Destruction is easily one of the best albums ever made. Fuck. It's amazing.

Almost everything they did was great.

Savage Clone 08.08.2008 10:17 AM

Appetite for Destruction is a pile of overproduced LA rock crap. You lose IQ points every time you listen, and not in a good way like with Blue Cheer or something. I remember when that album came out and how much it represented everything I loathed about music at that time. There was never anything remotely "cool" about that band or their music.

Memories are short.

I was about to reply, but this says at all.

"Use Your Illusion I and II" were a bit too ridiculous and long but some of the epic songs like Estranged were amazing. They were best at rocking though.

"Spaghetti Incident" was a bunch of decent covers of mostly awesome punk songs.

"Lies" was great.

"Appetite"... Rocket Queen and It's So Easy are so great.

Really, G'N'R were amazing songwriters. The same can't be said for most bands on here that people like (Battles, Liars, etc).

atsonicpark 08.08.2008 10:20 AM

Appetite has amazing riffs, solid playing, great solos (a true rarity), catchy choruses, structurally complex songs. Just brilliant.

fugazifan 08.08.2008 10:20 AM

serge gainsbourg
he was BRILLIANT for the 60s and the beggining of the 70s. then he started making reggea hip hop

ScreamingSchool 08.08.2008 10:24 AM

Frickin' Wire. They got baaaad.

atsonicpark 08.08.2008 10:42 AM

Very true. They have done nothing but shit except for Read and Burn 1 and 2 (and Send) for many many years.

PAULYBEE2656 08.08.2008 11:07 AM

mercury rev
flaming lips
interpol
arguably wire

jetengine 08.08.2008 01:09 PM

Guns N Roses pretended (to this day!) that they were putting an end to the the whole 'hair metal'/LA Glam/power ballad phenomenon. The truth of the matter is that 90% of listeners at the time saw them as just an extension of that whole scene. Even Jane's Addiction, who were sometimes compared to G 'N' R in the very beginning, sounded a million light years from them.
