For the record, I am joking, and will surely regret this later.

Yuengling's Lager is okay, but their black & tan is atrociously bad.

These are a couple of my favorite microbrews. Both are in upstate New York. Saranac is NY's oldest brewery.
The pricey (Brooklyn Beer, the Stout is pictured):

the cheaper, but just as good really (Saranac Summer Variety pack pictured):

For a lager, I like Beck's, Pilsner Urquell, or one of the Brooklyn Beer or Saranac Lagers. Heineken, to me , takes like a stale or flat Beck's.

in between: You cannot go wrong with Bass Ale.

For heavier stuff, I go for Saranac Black & Tan, Brooklyn Beer Stout & Guinness. After the first Gulf War, a friend smuggled back two racks of beer from Germany. One was Sympatico Dopplebock & the other was EKU 28, named as such because it is a 28 proof, 14% alcohol by volume malt-syrup beverage; I've never had beer like that before or since & probably never will.

The king-daddy though is Sam Smith's Oatmeal Stout. Splurge & buy a pint today & discover why it is the King Of All Beers:

I don't get American Lagers. Really doesn't make any sense. Heineken may be rubbish, but it's not as bland as Becks to my mind. Cultural differences, perhaps?

Bass Ale strikes me a strange choice. All the old men in the country pubs drink that. It's notorious round these parts for unleashing havoc on ones arse in the morning.

Sam Smith's Oatmeal stout? What kind of a crazy man are you?

Ok, I don't really care, you're entitled etc. I'm growing ever fonder of a pint of Otter lately, and the Badger brewery has plenty of fine ales. I'm going to a beer festival in Berlin in a few months (money willing) that I'm looking forward to immensely.

Now - do we have any CAMRA members that could tell me whether it's worth my while joining?

atari 2600 06.10.2006 05:05 PM

natural ice & icehouse will fuck your world as will sparks & the like malt beverages

the absolute two worst:

I bet you are...the EKU 28 I had was like no other beer; it's like a whole different experience sorta like tequila or ouzo is to other liquors. I haven't tried Otter; I need to sample me some. Sam Adams got license fro m the government to make some potent US beers a few years ago & they are usually pretty good.
Try out some EKU 28 when in Berlin.
