Dude, you gotta listen to Sandbox, it came out on the same year as Devil Between My Toes and it's full of amazing pop songs ! A really underrated record.

Dr. Eugene Felikson 08.27.2010 12:37 PM

:p Oh, I know Sandbox. Also excellent. I just really like DBMT for some reason.

noisereductions 08.27.2010 12:41 PM

I like Sandbox better.

But as cliched as it sounds, Bee Thousand, Alien Lanes, and Under The Bushes are my favorites. That era is unstoppable. But there's plenty of otehr great albums throughout the discograhpy.

TheFoxBen 08.27.2010 03:42 PM

Yeah, dude ! Bee Thousand + Alien Lanes + UTBUTS is like the most perfect streak of albums since Wire's Pink Flag/Chairs Missing/154.

My band played a guided by voices tribute show in cincy that pollard attended, we opened the show with 'your charming proposal', 'weedking' and 'paper girl'. It was fuckin awesome. pollard was in the balcony right above the stage, drunk as fuck, yelling fuck ya! after each song haha!

surreal.

Needless to say, there were more dayton bands on the bill, that came down for the event.

My experience every GBV record is pretty much the same. I'll listen to one I haven't heard before and say "well, this is ok, but it's no where near as good as 'x record' (x being the previous one I listened to). So when I first heard Alien Lanes I thought 'eh, it's fine, but no where near as good as Bee Thousand.'

And then after around listen five or six it just hits me 'man, this album is a fucking jam!'. That happened with all of the early ones, Vampire on Titus, Propeller, Sandbox, Same Place The Fly Got Smashed, etc. Hasn't really hit me with the new ones yet, though I like Isolation Drills quite a bit.

I love Bee Thousand, but I'm surprised how many consider that GBV's classic record and not Alien Lanes or Under The Bushes Under The Stars.... I think both of them are better than Bee Thousand.

Eitherway, that is probably their best three LPs in a row.

I didn't mean to imply that they were bad experiences. I also didn't mean to omit the word 'with'. I just meant that every new one I listen to at first listen I'm underwhelmed because I'm too attached to the previous one. But before too long it blows me away, one way or another.

Anyway, my favorite three peat of theirs is Propeller/Bee Thousand/Alien Lanes.

Bee Thousand was my first GBV album, so it's the one that means the most to me. Alien Lanes and Under are just as "good" though.

my bad.

Yeah, I guess it has something to do with what you heard first. My first album was Alien Lanes, it was on my brother's computer and I remember being intrigued by the album title and the cover. After only five songs, I knew I would become addicted.
