normally i should prefer the "the" over the "my", since "my" shows ownership and ownership of a person isnt my thing, but i dont. ok, i dont like "my wife" either, but the "the wife" feels to me formal in a puritan, old fashion, completely of a person who has swallowed a stick- way.

edit. "my girlfriend" isnt bother me. i guess its the ownership ^2, in the case of my wife, since wife alone indicates "ownership".
and yo to me, if i managed to get accross to you what i mean by all that.

so whats the correct way of indicating that i'm refering to the girl i married? If i said to you "Em" you would know who i was talking about, so by saying "my wife" you know who i mean. Its not indicating 'ownership'. Thats bollocks. I'm her Husband. She's my Wife.

cheers innit

MellySingsDoom 01.22.2009 10:33 AM

Glice - As a fake Londoner, I tend to use "cheers" rather a lot (as you're aware). Is the over-use of "cheers" by us type to be tolerated, sneered at, or even (gulp) embraced?

Nefeli - I know what you mean re "the wife/my wife" - it's something that's I'm curious about too (See also: the missus, the breadknife, 'er indoors and my favourite (c/o the late John Mortimer) - she who must be obeyed).

afterthefact 01.22.2009 10:37 AM

I think "my wife" is more acceptable than "the wife." With the first, although "my" does usually imply ownership, this isn't the case here. Many uses of "my" simply indicate the relation of your subject to yourself, i.e. my God, my school, my boss, etc.

To say "the wife" gives less honor to your subject. You have cut off her relation to you (even though the word "wife" still indicates that, grammatically you have done so) and have made her an object.

Even worse, a guy I work with says "the old lady," which I won't even get started on.

Everyneurotic 01.22.2009 10:52 AM

spend 5 minutes thinking about it and must everybody is a hipster, you started getting disturbed and think about hipster consipiracy theories and how they secretly run the government...vice is just a cover for a monopoly of the media!!!

---

last summer when i went to see the ex with getatchew mekurya and mahmoud ahmed and others at lincoln center, three idiots came into the row of seats i was in, and then they started to yell really obnoxiously "WOOOOOOOOOHH!!!! ROCK N' ROLL!!!! YEAH!!!!" being extreeeeeemely ironic and annoying and then leaving (thankfully) after like five minutes. THAT'S when i advocate people to kill all hipsters.

I've come across this when studying language politics. There is a good science fiction book called The Dispossessed in which there is an anarcho-syndicalist planet which uses the "the" language while the other planet is an advanced capital state which is based on ownership. I suggest that book to anyone curious about possession in language.

Cheers.

This is a particular pet hate of mine, too.

I would show you what a true hipster looks like by posting a picture of myself, but I'm very shy.

Saying my wife is less objectifying than the wife if you ask me. You don't say the sister, the mom, the dad. You use "my" but it doesn't imply that you own them, it simply shows that he/she is a relation to you. Just like "my day was good" doesn't mean you own the day but that it is a good day in relation to you.

gmku 01.22.2009 06:37 PM

A true hipster wouldn't be caught dead answering this thread, let alone visiting this forum!

And let's not forget that a true hipster would mock the internet for being so 1990's.

gmku 01.22.2009 06:42 PM

What's the internet?
