louder 03.21.2013 04:12 AM

incredible. those two are killing the game right now.

Danny on that futuristic rap tip. ASAP Rocky is said to have a verse on the final version. but i already think it's legit.

Who are the best upcoming New York-based MC's these days, my blog is underground/indie label New York-music themed and it's lacking in Hip Hop content.

batreleaser 03.23.2013 10:19 PM

"And it's a downward spiral, got me suicidal but too scared to do it, so these pills will be da rifle"

That line always gets stuck in my head, great hook with dark content, I love that.

I don't know if he's "upcoming" anymore, but A$AP Rocky has album of the year so far...

batreleaser 03.23.2013 10:48 PM

Yeah I'm well aware of him, and have heard the new record a few times. I dont love love love it but there are a few unreal tracks (fuckin problems, pmw stand out immediately). My editor Wilbert has hung out with him a bunch he says he's a real nice dude.

Roc Marciano & Ka are the best. The Underachievers dropped my fav project of the year so far. Azealia Banks is cool, i loved "1991 EP". ASAP Ferg is a horrible rapper but makes good music. Joey Badass is not bad, considered one of the most promising young MC's.

Action Bronson, Flatbush Zombies, Mr. Muthafuckin' Exquire, Le1f, Theophilus London - all sorta buzzing atm but i'm not into. French Montana is actually the biggest rapper to come outta NY these days lol.

batreleaser 03.24.2013 12:40 AM

I know Roc, I LOVE the new record. Haven't heard Ka, will check that out. Also havent heard any Underacheivers. Plenty familiar with everyone else on there though. Seen Action, Flatbush Zombies, and Exquire all live. Not to mention Action is on VICE records now.

I am not out of tune with hip hop, I just need small New York hip hop labels and stuff for my blog.

But yeah I listen to "Reloaded" constantly. That I would say is the best hip hop album so far this year. Or maybe the new Ill Bill.

louder 03.24.2013 12:45 AM

Reloaded is from 2012 though. but yeah it was easily one of the best albums last year. you'll also like Ka's album "Grief Pedigree".

noisereductions 03.24.2013 08:04 AM

that Underachiever mixtape is good. Yeah.

noisereductions 03.26.2013 07:02 PM

1/3rd of the way thru IANAHB2... so far I like it.

louder 03.28.2013 08:56 AM

so WOLF is fucking excellent. most of it sounds like Bimmer. you're gonna love it, NR.

louder 03.28.2013 08:57 AM

Tyler on "Rusty".. might be his best verse ever.

noisereductions 03.28.2013 05:59 PM

looking fwd to Wolf for sure.

video of the year?!?!

louder 03.29.2013 01:09 PM

http://stereogum.com/1302012/prematu...re-evaluation/

this guy called Tyler's production "cocktail jazz" or "hotel-lobby" music, lol. honestly i can't even argue with some of his points, though i enjoyed the album. i mean lyrically Tyler still hasn't completely matured yet. good review, maybe a lil too harsh though. he's still very young. shit, i just want him to go ahead and make a full prog-rap album. maybe someday.

louder 03.29.2013 01:31 PM

yeah someone in the comments said the same reviewer wasn't criticizng Keef's lyrics when he reviewed his album. that helped me to put things in perspective.

louder 03.29.2013 01:55 PM

true, my main problem with Keef is how his songs basically have the same fucking rhythm. Finally Rich was entertaining for a couple of days then it got boring.

louder 03.29.2013 02:09 PM

Hate Being Sober is a fucking anthem! 50 dropped his verse in years on that one. even though he doesn't really do drugs.

louder 03.29.2013 02:24 PM

so it's rumored that Danny Brown got a song titled "Return of the G, Pt. 2" on his upcoming album.

louder 03.29.2013 03:52 PM

i used to have it as my ringtone. and i'm the whitest kid alive. plus i actually like being sober tbh. :o

woot

Life Is Good was my shit. Can't wait.

new Deerhunter single is awesome! noisy as fuck. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bYUENZQ84-E

Severian 04.03.2013 06:19 AM

I'm glad to hear that. I've been expecting that band's decline to begin since 2007. Never seems to happen. Ok... Well, into iTunes then.

I thought it was really shit...

deerhunter were like the formative contemporary 'indie rock' band for me, but I can't help but feel that subsequent to logos brad's and their work has just gotten progressively weaker. halcyon digest had a couple of great songs (desire lines is probably the best thing they've put their name to) but for the most part it was nigh-on mindless drivel, filler that cox can seemingly churn out in his sleep. parallax was the nail in the coffin for me. what was previously special about them was the way that they made these old trends sound new, but those albums really saw him and the band succumb to flat revivalism.

I can't help but think that monomania will be the same. it's now ultra-stylized, the grit is so contrived it's painful to watch, whereas cryptograms was a genuinely dirge-y piece of work and microcastle/fluorescent grey were emotionally honest and thereby appealing.

I'll still give it a listen though, they're still a phenomenally talented band. I simply wish they'd cut the fucking act and just be a solid group who can play siq kraut-gaze jammerzzzz.

noisereductions 04.03.2013 06:00 PM

I really love Deerhunter.

Anyway, WOLF is pretty excellent.

louder 04.03.2013 06:41 PM

i thought Halcyon Digest was gorgeous. i'm really excited about their new album.

I just listened to Microcastle after reading your comments about Monomania.
I think it's their worst record. It's good, and even great at moments (Little Kids), but as a follow up to Cryptograms and ...Faggot it just didn't meet my expectations more up my alley. Halcyon Digest is just a great basement pop album. Plays like Pavement at times, but grows on you like '80s REM.

I also really love the first two Atlas Sound albums. Pretty much my idea of perfect music. The last one was terrible, but I'm hoping for a redemptive fourth release.

Oh, right... Hip hop. Well, anyone hear the new Cam'ron? I haven't because Im still listening to Wolf and trying to think of a more accurate comparison group than Wu Tang.

Stumped.

Pharcyde? No...
Black Sheep? Kinda, maybe, no.
Ghetto Boys? Hmm. Interesting.

Severian 04.03.2013 06:44 PM

Louder, NR:

How are you two feeling about IANAHB 2? One listen had me reaching for Tha Carter III, but I feel I should give it more of a chance.

louder 04.03.2013 06:50 PM

kinda hated it for the most part. :( Wayne doesn't care about music at all anymore. i miss C3 era so much.

louder 04.03.2013 06:52 PM

and yeah i just finished listening to "Logos" by Atlas Sound, such a beautiful and soothing experience.

noisereductions 04.03.2013 07:52 PM

OK let's see....

1. Cam has a new album???

2. IANAHB2 is pretty bad. But a lot of that is cuz it's 18 tracks. It could be a good like 10 song album. But 18, and he's got almost nothing to talk about? Too much. There's good songs though. They're just mostly buried in too much filler.

3. Atlas Sound is legit. But Let The Blind is preferred to Logos.

4. Deerhunter is great. Turn It Up is meh. Cryptograms is excellent. Microcastles is amazing in my opinion. my favorite. Weird Era is pretty good. Halcyon was very very great. Looking fwd to the new one.

...I don't know what just happend you guys.

Severian 04.04.2013 06:28 AM

Same thing's been happening to me.

Anyway, I see guest's losing love fast for Deerhunter. Have faith! I thought I was alone in believing them to be "THE" band of the era for indie noise pop dirge, etc. I'm glad to hear you felt the same way, and yes Parallax was fucking awful, but that wasn't Deerhunter now, was it?

They're a great band and they're progression from dirgey noise filth prog-punk to dirgy noise filth prog-pop brings to mind Sonic Youth, especially since they've made the transition so well. And if any album stands out as a flop, it can still easily be attributed to probability at this point, and made up for by awesome subsequent releases.

I have not listened to the Monomania single yet, because I'm actually a little nervous now. But I have confidence in that scrawny beautiful creep's ability to make the kind of music that people like us thought was reserved for "ye olde indie bands of yore" ... By which I mean '80s underground and college shit.

Lets keep the faith guys.

Also, for the sale of the thread, I'll just mention that I've got a killer career spanning mix called Jay-Z VS Nas: You're Not Worthy. It goes back and forth between the two artists, one track at a time, in chronological order, using the best songs they've recorded.

I know the title sucks, but it's a fucking masterpiece and a fucking blast to listen to at work.
Btw: Jay-Z seems to be winning in every era except for the later '90s.

noisereductions 04.04.2013 05:32 PM

sev, you need to hear this mixtape:

it is every one of the tracks aimed at each other from the beef, chronologically. Fucking awesome archival material.
