A ZED AND TWO NOUGHTS
Peter Greenaway, 1985

slow and a little too long? yes. but ambitious and brilliant and deranged just the right way also.

reminded me a lot of "26 bathrooms" --from the music to film's aspect ratio to the alphabet thing to other small details, but this is a HUUUUUGE project, unlike the bathroom one.

opening shot

(but they use 26 kinds of lighting throughout the movie)

here's a trailer i haven't seen but i'm just gonna link

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_yia2nqt6U

worth watching the intro and commentary in the disc

I heard this was pretty shit. I love mob movies (good ones), but I'm not one of those people who fawns over Johnny Depp. He hasn't given a knock-out performance since Ed Wood in, like, 1995. I never got the appeal actually. His best films have been the two Burton-Depp collabs that didn't suck (Edward Scissorhands and the aforementioned.)

I'll bet this was a bit like Killing Them Softly, another mob movie that felt like a million other mob movies. I had high hopes for KTS because I love Brad Pitt and I don't care what anyone has to say to that by way of snark. Man's delivered some great performances (The Assasination of Jesse James..., Moneyball, 12 Monkeys), but this was a rare miss for him.

I love brad pitt too.

THE DISCREET CHARM OF THE BOURGEOISIE (Buñuel, '72)

just fucking brilliant, i hadn't seen it in aaaaages, but better and funnier than i ever remembered. everyone should know this movie well, because it has great jokes.

pepper_green 12.10.2016 11:26 PM

oh mi god, I so love brad pitt too! but, too bad Pitt didn't do a great example of acting and emulating like Depp did as an historic figure in Fear and Loathing.

Pitt couldn't act his way out a shoe store and never will.... pretty boy badass is easy to emulate. Pitt over Depp?... yr fucking crazy!!!!

Depp all the way! yo, im serious!!!

it's actually pretty decent. nothing could compare to Killing Them Softly, which is a waste of film and everyone's time and god almighty himself.

also, Baron Munchausen is one of the greatest films ever but, im a dork.

demonrail666 12.11.2016 06:42 AM

I like Brad Pitt but I wouldn't say he's as good an actor as Johnny Depp, who I generally don't like but have to admit he's an excellent actor. Brad Pitt's in that category of 'better than you'd expect', for me, but no more than that.

It's OK if you're a fan of the genre, just not in the top league. Depp is fine but I'd say its the supporting cast that really stands out.

demonrail666 12.11.2016 06:52 AM

Possession

One of the weirdest horror films ever. The kind you can watch over and over again trying to get your head around it. Brilliant.

pepper_green 12.11.2016 07:34 AM

Possession disturbed the fuck out of me. I watched it not long after I broke up with a girlfriend.

haven't watched it since. oh yeah, it's brilliant alright! if you want to get fucked in the head extra hard after a break up.

Brad Pitt's like Cary Grant. He brings a certain "Brad Pitiness" to all of his roles, and sort of bends the part to his will. Like I mentioned earlier when talking about Keanu. It's not great method or character acting, but it's still pretty great, pretty consistently.

It's obvious that Johnny Depp is very talented, but I can count his good performances on one hand. His shitty ones, I'd need all my digits. And I can't even remember half of his roles, so.. yeah.

Killing them Softly was super shit, it's true. Also excessively violent if I remember correctly, without much of a story to hold it up.

ROBIN HOOD: MEN IN TIGHTS
(mel brooks, '93)

some jokes are a incomprehensible unless you were alive in the 90s AND saw the keving costner robin hood, but it remains a piece of high-quality goofy shit. plenty of really stupid jokes to laugh at-- yes, you laugh because it's so stupid, not because the joke itself works. so it works.

great cast and all--a young chapelle, the dread pirate roberts, brooks himself, richard lewis, a hot redhead i don't know her name but works great here, some english guy who always plays a douche, even a picard cameo... dom deluise as marlon brando had me laughing the hardest though--that shit is unforgettable.

Hah. I know exactly what you mean because I saw both this and Prince of Thieves in the theater when they first came out (fuck I feel old).

Not one of Mel's best, but definitely good for a larf. Haven't seen this thing in ages.

haa haaa blinkin

Severian 12.11.2016 03:59 PM

That redhead was a cutie. Wasn't she on Wings at some point?

tw2113 12.11.2016 04:03 PM

She was in Problem Child as well, if I recall right, without simply looking her up on IMDB

I think it was Problem Child 2, yeah? She was the mum of the little girl. But yeah.

Hah. Problem Child. What the fuck happens to time? I forgot that movie even existed.

Severian 12.11.2016 04:19 PM

Men in Tights is a relic from an era where movies that were big enough got spoofs all their own. Before Scary Movie and Not Another Teen Movie started meta-spoofing. I lost interest when that shit happened.

Remember the good old days? Top Gun had Hot Shots (and First Blood/Rambo had Hot Shots Part Deux: Just Deux It ... aaahahaha!) and Lethal Weapon had Loaded Weapon. Good fucking times.

noisereductions 12.11.2016 05:17 PM

Always loved redheads.

tw2113 12.11.2016 07:40 PM

Amy Yasbeck is her name, and she's actually in both Problem Child movies, playing different characters each time.

Aha! Yes, I remember now! She was totally on Wings. Terrible show. Really one of the worst sitcoms ever. She was also in the Mask and Pretty Woman. :D

The Warriors

This one never gets old. Pure comfort food.

Although this version was a directors cut with some cartoon inserts. Not sure they really worked but still, baseball furies and all that. Can't go wrong.

LifeDistortion 12.12.2016 12:07 PM

I enjoyed this.

tw2113 12.12.2016 05:41 PM

Is that Madonna and Billy Joe Armstrong?

tw2113 12.12.2016 05:42 PM

I don't care what anyone says, I do enjoy Titanic still.

Fuck off that's EXACTLY what I thought when I first saw the poster

And yeah, Titanic is corny and lugubrious as fuck but I'm pretty sure I'd watch it from start to finish, happily, even in 2016.

When it came out I thought it was really visually impressive. But I thought it was like a cake made entirely of frosting.

tw2113 12.12.2016 08:26 PM

It was definitely parodied a lot and overplayed to death at the time, but I believe as an overall story, it holds up. Just need to get away from the massive over-saturation from the end of the 90s.

ilduclo 12.14.2016 02:45 PM

RocknRolla.

You know why they call me Tank, don't you Archie?
Well, I imagine it's because you're a dirty great big bloody black bastard
Think tank, nothing gets past the old think tank, Archie

!@#$%! 12.14.2016 03:11 PM

i've never seen titanic.

between the musical atrocity and the trailer, plus the kind of people who raved about it, i just stayed away

maybe i'm missing out just to be all hipster-like

i did see the analysis of it on zizek's guide to the movies or whatever that's called

but seriously i have no desire

can anyone convince me i'm wrong? give it a shot.

noisereductions 12.14.2016 03:17 PM

I saw Titanic once. In the theater. Because a girl. I was a teenager.

I don't remember it being horrible. But I don't remember caring either. And I don't have any interest in seeing it a second time, really.

Hah! Same here buddy. Ditto for another, lesser known movie with a Celine Dion song in it, Up Close and Personal. So many crap movies I've seen "because girls."

No, you're probably right. I just remember it being visually appealing, like I said, and the snippets of old timey Manhatten are cool. The love story is, if I remember correctly, quite heavy handed, though Leo is fun to watch as plucky young class warrior Jack.

Oh, there is Kate Winslet nakedness in it. Like... 1997 Kate Winslet nakedness. So that's reason enough for a lot of folks. Also, the nakedness is FF because somehow the fact that it's faux-historical makes the boobies important.

:D

Severian 12.15.2016 10:22 AM

It never should have won an Oscar though. Jesus Christ. Not that that was a particularly great year, but Good Will Hunting was a soulful and lovely movie, should have won Best Picture out of the shit selection (Full Monty was fun and stuff, but meh)

!@#$%! 12.15.2016 10:22 AM

yeah, that particular girl at that particular time failed to convince me

to be honest, i was only interested in her fine hams, not her conversation

so things did not pan out in the end

noisereductions 12.15.2016 10:23 AM

Good Will Hunting is one of my favorite movies ever.
