holy fuck tejas, good job with that chain.

i had the triple meat cheeseborges and my wife had the jalapeńo one. we made oaths to return when possible. probably next week by the look of it.

gotta try that pollo you say. also heard good stuff about the mushroom swiss.

as a dc expat i’m sorry to say this but whattaburger beats five guys at the burger game. yeah. sad but true. five guys has the better fries though (consolation prize). new mexico’s own lottaburger has the better chile (green, red, the green one is its own cultivar) but the meats & preparation ain’t all that and so it falls behind.

Peterpuff 03.06.2018 05:59 PM

Whataburger burgers are actually quite good. I am personally a fan of the late night Breakfast on a Bun - Sausage option, myself. Honestly, that is prolly my main staple after-concert go to grub.

Mildly off-topic (but sort of on), I will never forgive Konami for cancelling Silent Hills. That was going to be a project of epic proportions pairing Del Toro with Kojima in that Silent Hill world. Still excited for Death Stranding (and am staying away from any footage of it before playing), but it's not the fucked up Silent Hill world that I was really looking forward to Del Toro playing in.

Have not seen Shape of Water or Dunkirk yet. I want to check both out. Prolly going to Annihilation this weekend. Looking forward to that.

I’m only taking nominations here.

Blade Runner deserves a nomination for Best Picture and director. The rest I can give up, but I’m sticking to that.

And if the suggestion of the acting being worthy of a nomination is what bothers you, then... again, “Within cells interlinked/within cells within cells.” Watch the first baseline reading scene, then watch the later one, back to back. There’s a deceptive amount of range in Gosling’s performance, and I’m not saying that because I’m a fanboy. I’d love to have a reason not to like the guy, but he won’t give me any.

Also if I were on the academy, you wouldn’t have to listen to me bitch, because I would not have let those assholes leave the room without simply putting BR and Villeneuve on the list. I would have “Twelve Angry Men”’d that shit. ;)

I think Alex Garland (Annihilation) is another director who is at least approaching Nolan/Villeneuve/PTA-land in terms of quality and imagination.

I haven’t seen Annihilation yet, but I’m dying to. Ain’t got no time except for when I’m compin’ time, and then I’m fucking exhausted.

Severian 03.06.2018 07:16 PM

I have a friend who says Black Panther is better than Dark Knight, and will revolutionize not just superhero movies but SF movies in general.

Anyone seen it?

Let’s not talk about the Oscars anymore. I need a breather.

*Sits down for Blade Runner baseline read*

let’s talk about pacific rim! martial arts + mecha + kaiju

totally cheesy pastiche, loaded with spectacular effects, and never preteding to be a serious movie, this is del toro’s grindhouse, and i’m not sure it beats planet terror but it’s way more spectacular.

surely no oscars for that movie but—what fun! ha ha ha.

where del toro shat the bed was with “the strain” after the first season. but i forgive him.

You know what? I don’t even remember anything specific about Pacific Rim except for cool fighting and terrible dialogue about whether or not the operators are — what’s the term? Compatible, basically, but I forget how they say it. ??

Anyway, sounds like you feel about it the way I feel about Kill Bill (never seen the Grindhouse movies). Maybe I’ll Give it another shot.

There’s a sequel coming out in like a week I think.

it’s not a “good” movie!

it’s just a dumb blockbuster. like lethal weapon, which i rewatched this weekend.

my wife realized it’s a christmas movie and has bookmarked it for next winter ha ha ha ha.

right along with the die hards.

and yeah there’s a PR sequel coming. i think i wanna go see it in a megascreen. i know it will be shit! just want the rollercoaster. and to eat a pizza.

What’s with the exclamation point? I get this concept. Just saying maybe I’ll try it again.

ilduclo 03.07.2018 10:34 AM

Black Panther was ok. I'm not a comic fan, so what I appreciated about it was including 3rd world, racism & opression dialog in a pop movie. I can see why young black kids really like it. Also, some really attractive women in it, too, which certainly makes it more tolerable.

awards shows are a joke. They are TV shows that are there to pay for commercials. I don't know why people act like they "mean" something.

Nominees?

So far, only a couple of publications have *correctly* identified Blade Runner 2049 as the best. Oddly, I think Dunkirk has gone entirely without honors, butim not sure.

The Florida Film Critics Circle seemed to like it, so dry your tears.

Don't ask Hitchcock, Welles, Fellini or Bergman. They never won it either. Kevin Costner did, though, so he might be able to tell you. As a gauge of industry politics (and for the possibility of an Amy Adams wardrobe malfunctions) I consider the Oscars something of a guilty pleasure, but never any kind of gauge of quality.

Good point.

Oscar’s only made a few correct calls that I can think of. Daniel Day Lewis in There Will be Blood, Heath Ledger, Silence of the Lambs (maybe), and probably No Country for Old Men. Can’t think of a ton of other non-shit decisions the Academy’s made, at least not recently.

if I missed an Amy Adams wardrobe malfunction then I concede, I may actually be missing out on something haha.

(but seriously, I've never in my life watched an Oscar or Grammy or Emmy or whatever show.)

(I have watched some VMA performances in my life. Not the awards, but performances. Nothing stands out as memorable, though).

Totally agreed. I have seen you all posting about him in the past several weeks, and I am in total agreement with most of the comments. I still remember going to Ex Machina on the recommendation of a friend, knowing nothing about it. Got way hooked, and saw it in the theater 3 times total. I NEVER do that. Really excited to see what becomes of him.

We rented Ex Machina last week, and my expectations were low-ish for no real reason. I think just because I didn't really know much about it, but I just knew "hey, I like this kind of sci fi." I ended up finding the moving totally gripping, with excellent acting and thumbs-up tension. It's a pretty haunting movie that sticks with you after it's ended. I was super impressed. And later I was like "hey, holy shit... that was a great movie where only 3 people even had speaking roles." Quality shit.

Even before seeing this one, I think I had already stated that Annihilation was like the movie I was most excited about seeing this year?

I did not reealize until yesterday that the director of Thor Ragnarock is the same guy behind the hilarious What We Do In The Shadows. i am behind

what is What We Do In The Shadows?

I haven't seen Ragnarok yet unfortunately, but was gifted a digital copy this week, so I'll be watching it this weekend finally.

ilduclo 03.08.2018 01:05 PM

Given that What we do and thor were both by Watiti, we tried to watch thor. Nope, bailed after 5 minutes. No comic book movies for me. I'd rather read a book or listen to some music, cook, do just about anything. All that being said, I got sort of dragged to Black Panther and thought it was OK

What We Do in the Shadows is a vampire comedy. It is fucking GREAT, and certainly deserved the Oscar way above Dunkin Dunkirk!

evollove 03.08.2018 01:27 PM

Not a comic book movie dude either, and Thor seems like an especially boring character, but What We Do is a really great movie, so I might give it a shot. I can afford to waste five minutes.

I'm sure it's better than Duncrap. Then again, Spice World was better than anything Nolan ever made.

(We're just messing with Sev in good fun, right? Did I cross a line? I actually haven't seen Dunkirk.)

Rob Instigator 03.08.2018 01:44 PM

Thor is not good. it is fun, but not good.

What We Do In Shadows is so goddamn funny in making fun of every single vampire lore thang....man so funny
much better than Thor.

The worst part of Thor was watching the character Scourge using a "Shakeweight" to try and impress some lady Asgardians.

Rob Instigator 03.08.2018 01:45 PM

It is a mockumentary from New Zealand about 4 vampires that share a flat, and are invited to the annual Masquerade Ball, also attended by withes, zombies, but NOT werewolves.... hahahhahahah

Rob Instigator 03.08.2018 01:46 PM

Taika Waititi announced that he and Jemaine Clement are working on a What We Do In Shadows television series that's going to be on FX. Not sure what that means for the feature sequel.

ilduclo 03.08.2018 04:40 PM

WEREWOLVES, not SWEARWOLVES!

evollove 03.08.2018 05:00 PM

Why do vampires prefer virgin blood?

"I think of it like this:

if you are going to eat a sandwich, you would just enjoy it more if you knew no one had fucked it."

Rob Instigator 03.08.2018 05:18 PM

yes!

Stu is cool though....

Rob Instigator 03.08.2018 05:18 PM

In the IMDB trivia, it stated that Stu was a guy who was hired, as he thought, to do some data analysis, but instead got put in the film as a human who does data analysis. hahahaha. Awesome. Only non-actor of the bunch!
