fuck yeah it was better than the americanized remake i thought

well i watched the original first so it had first dibs on my imagination

let the right one in was also better original

wings of desire... i wont even fucking look at the american version. from the poster alone i might vomit.

Dr. Eugene Felikson 01.19.2019 11:54 PM

Hahaha the Nicolas cage one? Dont forget that Kevin Smith's Dogma also took a lot of inspiration from Wings of Desire and that movie owns

I remember Tarantino saying the Breathless remake was better than the original which has always sparked my curiosity. I should finally watch that this year

i think breathless a bit overhyped

i prefer bob le flambeur

melville ftw

eta: watch jean pierre melville. a++++++

Dr. Eugene Felikson 01.20.2019 03:07 AM

What's mutton?

Is that like the chicken liver sandwich I can get over here?

demonrail666 01.20.2019 04:45 AM

mutton is just older lamb. Very nice. Unique taste but, as el Symbols says, close to goat. It tends to be used in stews or heavily marinaded in a kebab.

..

Anyway, back to movies

A Nightmare on Elm Street (Remake)

I seem to be alone in actually quite liking this. It definitely has its faults, and no way can it compare with the original, but compared with most of the other recent remakes, this isn't half bad. The emphasis is less on Freddie and more on the weirdness of sleep-deprivation, which it does pretty well.

I couldn't stand Last Jedi but besides that, I still think the best SW film all round is IV. Empire is just behind it for me but it works best if you watch it as part of the trilogy whereas IV is complete in and of itself. Also, with Empire, I always think its best part is the battle on Hoth, which the remainder of the film never quite lives up to.

Are you talking about the one from the 80s with Richard Gere or a new remake - which I've not heard anything about?

Re the original, I suppose its place in film history makes it inevitable that it's gonna be overhyped to some degree. But then the same could be said of stuff like Battleship Potemkin, Birth of a Nation and Citizen Kane. With the exception of Kane I'd call them significant rather than films I'd want to watch just for the hell of it.

Dr. Eugene Felikson 01.20.2019 07:43 AM

Episode 4 is a solid pick for the best. It certainly is the star wars film which captures the franchise's adventurous spirit best

Sorta reminds me of the whole Back to the Future 1 vs 2 argument I constantly get into w my friends

And yes, the Richard Gere Beeathless. Tarantino loves it but I've never seen it. I'm assuming they play it straight?

I adore Godard's original. I always say that between Breathless and Eraserhead (and maybe Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Pink Flamingos... and Clerks, if I'm being honest) you can literally learn everything u need to know about movies and filmmaking.

!@#$%! 01.20.2019 08:18 AM

mutton is a sheep that is older than a year. like lamb but more flavorful. beefier actually, and it’s mixed with beef for doner kebab. BUT ANYWAY.

i love potemkin. i rewatch it sometimes, it’s like looking at egyptian art of something.

breathless i get the camera was quick but i don’t love it. was talking about the original. hence the comparison with melville. jean-pierre melville. the last name was his code name from his commando days. no joke. resistance paratrooper was he? anyway. glorious fucking movies where godard always leaves me cold. melville does praise breathless in an interview and sure it was an important flick but melville was.... ah, just watch melville.

concur that the first star wars (1977 or whatever) was the best one in that a) it works on its own b) it was a cultural phenomenon c) had no fucking eewoks d) contains gross incest which wtf lucas getting away with it e) biggest place in history than breathless, f) etc.

i loved it as a kid , but doesnt do a lot for me in this age. same as bugs bunny. what’s up doc?

pink flamingos now that is a movie i can watch all day. my old dvd rip died of something so i no longer do so much but ah shit i love edie now more than i loved r2d2 then

Dr. Eugene Felikson 01.20.2019 08:39 AM

Cant go wrong w some Chuck Jones era Bugs Bunny

Breathless just feels so alive, even today. I've never felt a movie feel as light and shapeless. Idk I feel like movies have certain auras and I totally dig Breathless'

Hmm. Possibly true, actually. I’m not sure. I like the Dark Knight the most, and it has that Ledger performance, but as overall films the two you mentioned could certainly be the best.

Dunkirk too.

There's something so gross about the mcu movies. I think @$$@$@@ hit the nail on the head. Too much bang not enough buck. These stories work better in serialized formats like comics or tv shows i think. You a big DC guy? I barely know DC

Y'all crazy for not living TLJ though. Such a bizarre film, it a like Lynch's Dune

I’m a bigger DC guy than Marvel guy, but I like Marvel movies in general more than DC movies (with the exception of the Nolan Batman ones, of course... and maybe Man of Steel)

I dont find Breathless overhyped whatsoever. I guess if you're watching movies for plot, then yeah. But that's never been what Godard is about. Whenever I watch movies the first thing I think of is the emotions I feel while watching them, then the colors (or lack thereof) and sound design. They all have different energies, it's why I dislike the mcu. Theyre like soulless pits. Like if Ted Cruz were a film.

Breathless is youth. Its quick, its quirky, its punk rock. Breathless is lustful love all while constantly winking at the camera like a wispy wind.

Never bothered with battleship or birth of a nation. Birth seems especially boring, and doesnt it frame the kkk in a positive light? Like long as fuck also. I dont do well w silent films unless it's comedy or horror.

Really need to rewatch Kane. I remember hating it as a kid. I didn't like La Dolce Vita when I first saw it at a young age either. Hmmmmmm....

I'll have to rewatch everything. I know I couldn't stand the third one, and stopped halfway through, but both the first two Dark Knight movies were ace. I prefer the Scarecrow and watching Bruce become the bat. Fuck man lol.

Also hot take: ledger's joker is overrated due to his death. Willem defoe's Green Goblin is leagues beyond what he pulled off and homeboy had a metal mask on half the time. That mirror scene though or when he first becomes the goblin and busts out like hulk Hogan on poppers

Batman Begins is my favourite of the three, too. Dark Knight was too reliant on Heath Ledger for me and, to be honest, I found large sections of it quite boring.

That’s stupid. The third movie is certainly the worst, but Tom Hardy’s Bane is the second best villain, easily. Re-watch and peep the body language. That’s the best comic-to-screen *improvement* ever. Because Bane was that sucky in the comics and was that awesome in the movie. And genuinely threatening.

I’ll give you that watching Bruce become Batman is better than watching Batman be Batman in most cases, but The Dark Knight as a whole just pulverizes its predecessor. It’s like, “Oh, you liked that 8.5/10 movie? Ok, cool cool. Hope you’re not disappointed by this 100,00/10 slice of perfection sequel that makes you jizz your pants through your BRAIN.”

OHHHHOHOHOOOOOOHHHNO NO NO NO

How long has it been since you watched Spider-Man? Those are some of the shittest movies to ever make fucktons of money, and Dafoe — despite being a capable actor — for some reason CHOSE to be a melodramatic cartoonish fuck-bro in those stupid goddamn piles of shit.

In the hierarchy of superhero films, Spider-Man 1, 2 and 3 are leagues below latter-day *X-Men movies* (that means they’re so bad that really bad movies look good in comparison).
The Dark Knight is a great film irrespective of genre, and Ledger’s performance is Daniel Day Lewis-level or beyond.

You’re a madman or a troll or both.

Or you just haven’t watched any of these films more than once.

Raimi's Spiderman 2 is still my favourite Superhero film. I also prefer the 1st Iron Man and Avengers films to any of Nolan's Batman trilogy. But different people look for different things in these kinds of films.

I'm going to Florida for a week tomorrow, and have added the following unwatched films and necessary rewatches to my laptop to keep me company:

Batman Begins
The Dark Knight
Blade Runner
Blade Runner 2
Citizen Kane
Force Awakens
Last Jedi

Prolly won't watch everything, but I can't see myself being disappointed by any of this either.

a man escaped
pickpocket
au hasard balthasar (probsbly his best)
une femme douce (dostoevski adaptation)
lancelot du lac (king arthur legends gone FUCKING BONKERS) (also very fucking funny)

i did not like a country priest (his first) and i somehow keep missing mouchette

but o man yes look him up

Dr. Eugene Felikson 01.20.2019 05:47 PM

the only unwatched film on that list is Blade Runner 2 actually

but yeah i'll def check Le Samourai, been meaning to watch that for like a decade now. mustve downloaded it multiple times. have always loved the box art

You’re both insane.
Those films are so ridiculously bad they they belong in a quadruple feature with “The Room.” Seriously, so bad.

Maybe they were supposed to be bad?

I like Raimi movies, mostly. But not those fucking things.

Willam Defoe disgraced himself and his craft with that B-movie shtick.

REMEMBER WHEN HE PUTS ON A SHAWL AND TRICKS SPIDER-MAN BY PREDENDING TO BE AN OLD LADY IN A BURNING BUILDING WHO JUST HAPPENS TO HAVE A WATERMELON-SIZED HEAD AND THE VOICE OF A MAN? AND SPIDEY FALLS FOR IT?!

Because that HAPPENS in the first one.
And then Goblin does Power Ranger stance? “Tadaa!! Hahahahahahahah! Tricked you, Spider-Man!!”

Yeah. *Awesome* stuff, guys. Way better than the Oscar winning performance that people are still fucking deconstructing to this day in that movie that only assholes pretend not to appreciate. Yup.
Way better. Also, Tranformers is better than Blade Runner 2049, because SURE! WHY NOT! WE’RE LRETEBDING TERRIBKE THINGS ARE GREAT AND GREAT THINGS ARE TERRIBLE NOW.

Goddammit you’re both fucking trolling me.

All fantastic movies.

Awww... look that’s awesome bro and the acting too omg

Infinity War = bad because there was too much stuff in it, I guess

But Spider-Man... this movie... had the right amount of things in it, and those things were of the worst quality imaginable so must be better than the Dark Knight! Right! LOOOOOL!

Dark Knight y’bitches. Jesus.

lolol i dont know, it was many years ago, i just did not connect with it, maybe a bad vhs, maybe i came to it with different expectations.

i think something similar happened with mouchette jumping into the water or something. i might have seen the first few minutes and said nope.

i am not sure why tbh. maybe too much pathos in both? whereas others are more cerebral. balthasar seems the sweet spot though. whatta movie.
