Most are last decade of H-town and TX hip hops. Houston puts out a lot of music but to my ears too much is too similar. I do not have the differentiating tastes of someone who really knows the hip hop tunes.

Me too. It would be a goddamn shame if his "last LP" was released by the Lil Wayne who's made us yawn for the past half decade. It's going to need eccentric and varied production, and to not focus on club bangers or anything like that. He should definitely bring Ye back for a few tracks and go at it C3 style.

I kinda doubt it's gonna go down like that, but you never know.

Sure you don't mean "Can't Hold Us?" ;)

No. That's not funny. Macklemore is no laughing matter.

PIÑATA!!!!!

I'm kinda feeling like most of Mastermind sounds a little forced. But that could be because I made the mistake of reading the pitchfork review.

louder 03.13.2014 07:18 AM

Cocaine Piñata is incredible. best rap album since Yeezus. can't wait to get it on vinyl.

My Krazy Life is ok.

i agree 200%. i will be so disappointed if the first single is just another generic club banger produced by DJ Mustard.

can't trust Pitchfork anymore. they gave Mastermind a lower score than "God Forgives, I Don't".. do those fools even listen to music or do they just skim through it?

this album is in the same vein as Deeper Than Rap and Teflon Don (which they loved), not God Forgives.

God Forgives sucked because it really was too forced, the industry was hyping it up as the modern Life After Death and Ross crushed under the pressure.
however this time Ross was in his zone, just having fun, getting high in the studio and making some dope music with his acquaintances.

i'll take "Nobody" as an example, people were going to give him shit for remaking a Biggie song, but Ross' flow had them shook.

by the way, i don't even think it's his best release, but it's definitely a good album.
it's like what you said about Hov.. they bash an artist for the same reasons they praised them.

besides, the critics always kinda hated him.
they're kinda like those youtube commentors who recycle the same ol' jokes about him being fat or his past as a correctional officer.

they say they wanna see the man behind the character. i don't see anyone complaining about DOOM's character, right?

Mastermind still topped the charts (with higher first week sales than Oxymoron) without any hit singles..
the people definitely fuck with Ross. fuck what a critic says.

louder 03.13.2014 09:53 AM

listening to the new Skrillex album.

noisereductions 03.13.2014 12:23 PM

I haven't heard Mastermind or Oxymoron in their entirety yet. Just bits. Neither got me excited enough to pick up the albums yet. I kind of want both, but just not in a rush.

Did anyone hear the Young Money yet? I'll get it eventually.

So far, 2014, I've listened to that SGP mixtape the most for any hip hop release. Which isn't saying much.

I want LORDS and BEAUTY & THE BEAT to come out already.

louder 03.13.2014 01:31 PM

only the singles and Wayne's track. don't think i'll listen to the rest of it unless you're gonna tell me it's really good or something.

I've been buying tons of music this year, but it's already much slower for hip hop than 2013.

Perfect Pussy, Untold, Beck, Death Vessel, Axxa/Abraxas, Ex-Cops... These are the kinds of albums that are getting my attention.

I really want more hip hop on the shelves.
Yeah Freddie Gibbs and Madlib, Rick Ross, and Schoolboy are bringin it, but by this time last year we already had like 10 best of the year albums.

Am I missing all the good mix tapes or something?

nah it's not just you. I'm more excited to pick up the Beck than Ross, Schoolboy, Young Money.

My fav albums so far are Mogwai and Crosses.

Slow start. Last year we had Rocky come out in January though.

YG's album is great.

perfect pussy are the greatest load of shit that humanity has yet shat out, jesus christ fuckers will guzzle anything through their feeding tube linked up to satan's furry sludgy green shit-caked arsehole. don't know what happened to beck, I mean like I liked him when I was 12 but at least the dude had some personality, fuck, my brother was playing his new record in the car and it was like fleetwood mac without the coke and sexual tension. and fleetwood mac suck FURRY BALLS, tonguing sack gagging and vomiting up turds.

might check out that new madlib rekkid, no clue who freddie gibbs is but madlib's always had such a cool sound.

Kendrick and Freddie are the best rappers in the game at the moment.

Shyne Coldchain 2 is such a letdown to me. Vince is a good rapper but he barely knows how to make a song.

sorry dude.

I really love this Mac Miller track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UnAbszcy3bs

I feel like he should make a whole tape just rapping over 90's beats.

whew great track. Mac is definitely talented.

right? Lyrics are so good, and shit comes off effortless. I love that. It's like how Earl is so good it just seems so natural. I'm keeping my eye on Miller now for sure. Dude's weird. Young but into 90's shit and did covers of Bright Eyes songs on Youtube. Weird and awesome.

What? Really? To me the album sounds totally derivative, yes, but it blossoms from straight forward screaming post riot grrrrrl stuff (first half) to something much more interesting and weird (second half.)

Now, mind you, I have not been keeping up with the hype machine buckshot surrounding this band. I never read about them or heard them until my buddy at the record store gave me an early promo copy of "Say Yes to Love." So all I know is that the music is agreeable to me, and (kind of like last year's "Is Survived by" by Touché Amore) is genuinely energetic and raucous enough to feel like an honest to god 80s hardcore album; not like an imitation if one. So I don't care if the fans are assholes. The band, from what I've seen, can bring it.

And the new Beck is stellar.

Well, I don't know about that. In my experience, Weezy's album tracks (even downright deep cuts) have always been more interesting than his crowd-pleasing singles. I'm still gonna hold out hope, even if the single blows.

Not sure how I feel about it all yet. Do I think he's going to quit the game for real? Probably not. I think he's frustrated that he hasn't had a fan favorite in a while, and that Carter III kinda killed his career. All the cross-genre experimentation, rapid fire releasing of forgettable one off's, and return to form club bangin in the world can't change the fact that he made an artistic masterpiece, and it seems to have been a fluke.

Part of me hopes he puts out some multi producer (hopefully fly lo, rza, and Kanye) art-hop opus that makes even III pale in comparison. But I wouldn't mind getting a more down to earth, honest, genuine street rap album either. Something more like II.

But I definitely think he'll be back. All the best rappers go through phases of mediocrity. If he wants to be a legend he'll stick it out and keep making music like so many of the other hip hop legends have done.
