after processing data for the last half hour, I have determined that yes, I am "a little disturbed" that !@$#%! ever once considered my posts to be "high-brow".

I want to detail my posting formula to prove otherwise, but I'm afraid that one of those lurking pricks at Matador will steal it and use my kung-fu against me.

do you guys think he's really ok? I'd feel trrrrbull if he honestly did to call an ambi-lance.

Mister Integrity strikes again!

Cosloy had nothing to do with Big Black not getting royalties...He worked at Homestead but, from what I've read, was not responsible for the shady payment schedule, or lack thereof...

And I don't think his point was about having more integrity then anyone on this board (or otherwise)...He was just comically riffing on the stupidity of most MB poster speculation...

And, IMHO, most of the speculation on this board is kind of stupid...

How does anyone here know if Bardo Pond were "dropped", or Solex was "dropped" or not?

For that matter, why assume that just because a band leaves a label there is automatically some shady behind-the-scenes dirt at play...

Maybe Bardo Pond left amicably...or maybe Matador, after footing the bill for four albums, plus some promotion, decided that it was more prudent to put their resources towards another up-and-coming band...

And, since everyone is tossing out their opinions about Matador and their value as a label, here's mine:

I've always been impressed with the roster of artists they sign and release.
A number of my favorite records have come out under the matador banner and I think their current roster is impressive in it's diversity.

Current Matador Bands that I'm enjoying:
Brightblack Morning Light, Fucked Up, New Pornos, Malk/Jicks, MOB, Lav. Diamond, Shearwater, Yo La, Mogwai...

Seriously, that label has released music by so many great bands that Matador (along with Sub Pop and Merge) are really the standard bearers for independent rock music.

All you haters and pretentious snobs who listen to obscure, transgressive noise and hate any label who dares to venture out of the aggressive teenage boy cave can have fun living in the shadows and jerking off onto your limited edition CD-Rs.

Losers.

get out of my fucking miiiiind, man!!

I have never once agreed with a statement made here SO COMPLETELY. that's what keeps me from EVER posting in the "non-sonic sounds" sub-forum. it's masturbatory crap.

and to think, I was about to tl;dr you! :o

dammit all. I'm at my rep limit for the day.

....and that needed a bajillion (+1) edits. I'm out of here...

Two news stories caught my eye today. The first carried the headline 'Some internet geeks* talking shit'; the second read 'World at large not arsed in the slightest by geeks talking shit'.

You be right - I just checked this out myself (orig post was info from memory), so I withdraw my previous post on this topic.

Matador has been rarely been a good label at all. So incosistent it makes you turn your head the other way without batting an eyelid.

atsonicpark 09.24.2008 09:22 PM

At least we can say this about Matador: They really care about people's opinions on them.

...

They must have a low self-esteem.

Matador's Cosly Apologies for Acting Like Tony Victory

Sep 24, 2008

Want to know one of Matador Records' secrets to running an independent label? Don't be that guy from Victory Records.
In the wake of some sort of message-board melodrama that's, frankly, even less interesting than it is mature, Matador's Gerard Cosloy issued a long and, remarkably, less interesting than the original melodrama, apology for said melodrama. We'll skip the long-winded stories other than to say Cosloy took issue with the way users of a Sonic Youth message board were painting Matador Records' treatment of its bands. In the process of his apology, Cosly revealed the label sets its moral compass partially by avoid Victory-like tantrums and tactics -- something he forgot this time around.
"People sometimes ask me, 'what's the most important lesson you, Chris and Patrick have learned from Tony Victory" and after I look him up on Google to make sure I don't get him mixed up with Tony Curtis, I reply that we're all about respecting the audience's intelligence.
"ie. whatever we observe Tony doing, we try to do the opposite."

Everyneurotic 09.25.2008 12:04 AM

that's why i hate label worship/hatred.

it's incredibly dumb.

Cantankerous 09.25.2008 12:08 AM

cosloy just comes off as a fuckign tool. every time.

uhler 09.25.2008 12:34 AM

hahahaha i can't believe people in the indie record industry abide to not be like tony victory. this guy that i work with is an ex straight edger from chicago (we always talk about the "good ol' days" at work) and he told me tony victory likes to have threesomes in bathrooms after snorting lots of coke and he got thrown thru a car windshield once. he now has bodyguards.

Cantankerous 09.25.2008 12:36 AM

tony victory sounds like a good time.

Then there's a bunch more posts about the state of the thread or the state of this message board (like this one and floatingslowly's which usually start with "I love how..."), a few people laughing or being smartasses for a while, then the thread dying.

Until about a week later when it gets bumped, gets about 3 more replies.

3 months later, it gets bumped again, with someone going "haha." and someone else going "Why did you bump this?" and me going "Yes!"

Then it's forgotten until about 6 months later when someone goes "remember that thread where we said fuck matador a bunch? Wasn't that funny?" And someone bumps this thread again with "bump :)" and no one replies.

Carry on.

It's kind of depressing isn't it?

That's why I generally stay away from these sorts of threads.
