I wanna try this, how do you do this?

I posted these in the "post a picture of yourself" thread. However this is doing something more than a regular pose.

to start with night time is easier i did these during the day so my settings are a bit different to what they would be at night. f22 with my polariser (2 stops equiv) and nd filters (about 6 equivalent) so theoretically approx f30. was a 30 second exposure and i used my little 3 led work torch beam pointing towards the lens. there is some fucking increible stuff on flickr with light painting such as this from http://www.flickr.com/people/jannepaint/ :

light stenciling is something i really wanna try... on a side note if anyone has the sy stencils that used to be up on the website but no longer are i would really love them so i can try and do this kind of thing with them.

This was not taken by myself, however I post it here because of the colours and all.
This is the city I live in.

On a good day it would be 1/30.
On a regular day 1/40.

I might do the ones I like the best straight away, then take other clichés under slightly different angles, just to make sure there will be something nice in the end.

I liked your picture of the lonely tiny house on post 2506, for its frame.

To be honest, I cheat a bit and add a bit more this and a bit more that with Digital Photo Professionnal, and started with Picasa2 (free).

the loss of colours in porky's stuff might be how the cam in his phone meters. I generally use spot metering and meter for mid tones so i get fairly even exposure through the whole frame, unless i wanna specifically over or under expose something.

a mate of mine who is a great photographer in tokyo gave me some good advice about shooting; he said pick a topic each time and stick to shooting only 24 or 36 frames, this focuses your brain a bit more while shooting. then after shooting those frames just go shoot whatever captures your eye.

i take LOADS of photos at concerts, average of 700 in two hours. after selecting and processing, i keep about ten or twenty of them. if i have ten photos i can say are really good, it's been a great night.

the first thing i thought when seeing your photos was that you might have to be a bit more selecive in what you keep. three really good shots a re a lot more memorable than twenty seven average ones with three good shots hidden between them.

also, i think some of these photos might work better if there was more contrast in them, or if you'd take smaller details. maybe its because of the small size, but now some of them just have too many details and small things in them. focusing on one thing often ends up as a way stronger image.

i hope this helps you somehow :-)

ploesj 05.11.2009 08:37 AM

and by the way, i managed to get around twenty ok shots at the andrew bird concert on saturday (security made all photograpers stop after two songs, does anyone know why you only get two or three songs at concerts sometimes? mr. bird himself looked very surprised when i told him afterwards, he didn't understand it either, it doesn't bother at all as long as we don't use flash.)

anyway, photos can be seen here: weblog
or here: flickr

It's a pity, 'cause at the end of the run of the shows, they'd asked me if I wanted to travel to Miami to work for them, but I turned the offer down. had it happened today, I'd probably have said yes.

touring is only fun for a few months, then living out of a suitcase becomes shitter and shitter
