^Yep, it's garbage.

...ALI FEAR EATS THE SOUL, though.. what a film, Earl! Fassbinder is in my top 10 directors, so yeah.

ann ashtray 10.08.2010 09:20 PM

Yeah...I pretty much knew it would be shit, but it was one of those things I had to see regardless. The whole concept of the "human centipede" itself was somewhat interesting...but, it went absolutely no where outside of stereotypical handbook horror film cliches...and it pretty much failed even at that.

OooOoOOHH flat tire leads to dumb american party-going females knockin' on weirdo's door for what is only bound to be the most horrific experience of their lives...haha

How many times has that happened...

Japanese dude was pretty funny, though.

I'd give Gridlock'd a 7/10 actually. After my viewing, it's really stuck with me. They don't make gritty drug movies like that anymore. Everything is this music video bullshit -- Rectum for a Dream and Spun (and, don't get me wrong, I like Spun just fine, but it's completely ridiculous). Most High is, of course, my favorite drug movie of all time.. maybe Liquid Sky comes close (since everyone is clearly on heroin).

Speaking of drugs..

ANOTHER DAY IN PARADISE - 7/10

As you all know, I hate Larry Clark. Shakey cameras, boring ass movies about troubled kids (mainly boys) getting naked, constant use (misuse) of shitty background music.. yada yada yada. ANYWAY, this movie doesn't right his usual wrongs -- but there's a difference between this and his other weakass films. While his other films had me wanting to shut them off 20 minutes in, this one kept me compelled until the end (and I'd even seen it before, years ago). Why? Simple: JAMES FUCKING WOODS. Now anyone who is a fan of "Videodrome", "vampires", "the Boost", or any of the other miriad of films with amazing James Woods performances, knows what I'm talking about. But what they may not know is that this is probably James Wood at his most unhinged, scenery-chewing, classical BEST! I mean, the whole film is him screaming, doing drugs, breaking shit, punching people (for real), and saying FUCK. It's insane. Completely insane -- and compelling! While the story itself is a bit tired, cliche, and silly... James Woods makes a simple 5/10 movie into a great 7/10 timewaster. Shame about the awful soundtrack.

(unrated cut)

9/10

atsonicpark 10.09.2010 04:08 AM

Haha, 9/10? You must've really gotten a boner! Have you seen Drugstore Cowboy? Matt Dillon is awesome in that.

I watched... BRAZIL... which, of course, is many people's favorite movie of all time. I've seen it twice before, and well, I liked it a bit more this time, but it's still a high 5 or a low 6 to me. I don't like Gilliam's style, ever, which is just way too indulgent and excessive. He has great editing, and lots of cool shots with that weird lens he uses (almost like a fisheye lens at some points, extreme closeups on people's faces and whatnot). This movie has plenty of surreal, bizarre laughs, but it's just soooo long and such a mess, and is just completely nonsensical 90% of the time. The constant dream sequences are boring, the acting is very inconsistent (some of the actors are amazing.... that ugly Griest chick the main guy is inexplicably dreaming of... is... well, I think she's probably the worst actress in the history of acting. I actually lowered one point just because of her. I hear that Gilliam HATED her and her performance and cut like 30 minutes worth of her scenes. Should've just cut her out completely. HORRIBLE)... anyway, this is usually one of those love it or hate it deals, and I guess I'm just in the middle. I feel like there's a great movie in here somewhere, and the sets, for example, are amazing.. as is the costume design.. two things I usually don't give a shit about in films. So, yeah, I dunno. Alright film, but there just seems to be something off about it.

atsonicpark 10.09.2010 04:54 AM

You know what Brazil reminds me of, the more I think about it? A fucking Ernest movie! Not at first mind you -- not the first, oh, 90 minutes, but then the last hour is pure ERNEST! ERNEST GOES TO BRAZIL! Right after the horrible Griest actress is involved and kicking the dude out of her comedically huge semi.. and then the stuff with the shit suit.. all the maniacal screaming.. the dream sequences are right out of Ernest Goes to School... I'm going to rewatch it again and try to imagine Ernest P. Whorrell in the main role, I bet I'll give it a 10/10 then.

fugazifan 10.09.2010 05:26 AM

i love brazil. but i admit that he lead actress is terrible. but the lead actor who plays sam lowry is incredible in it.

i just saw
Danger Diabolik
pretty cool. the brilliant morricone score overshadows the rest of the fiolm a bit.
but it is still great.
morricone gets a 10/10 though.

atsonicpark 10.09.2010 05:29 AM

haha danger diabolik kicks so much ass. What a cool film.

On Bluray
7/10

It was basically two nymphos fucking for close to twohours... but it was bizarrely compelling, and I want a copy of the soundtrack

Well...yeah - Neve Campbell is a total babe. But seriously this movie is fucking brilliant! Have you seen it? I was totally getting Scarface, and Casino vibes the whole time from the art direction, and camerawork. Bill Murray was at the top of his game! As was Kevin Bacon, who gave one of his best performances ever, right up there with Friday the 13th, and Hollow Man! Oh, and the writing! I wasn't expecting nearly as well-written of a script as was delivered. Drugstore Cowboy was cool too...but it ain't got shit on Wild Things.

Dr. Eugene Felikson 10.09.2010 06:09 PM

atsonicpark 10.09.2010 06:09 PM

Yeah, I've seen Wild Things, it's cool, 9/10 is a bit high imo but it's enjoyable as hell.

Dr. Eugene Felikson 10.09.2010 06:13 PM

Hopefully it was the unrated cut. I haven't seen the theatrical version, but supposedly a few key scenes that better explain important plot elements were cut for theaters, as were the spicier bits of the sex sequences. Who would wanna see a neutered version of Wiiiiiiiillllld Things, anyhow?

atsonicpark 10.09.2010 06:37 PM

I dunno, I just always assume I've downloaded the unrated cut whenever I download a movie. Though to be honest, I've never really seen a movie improve that much based on it being "unrated", aside from horror movies. For example, one time I bought Dead Alive and thought it sucked. Turns out I had the r-rated version, and 36 (!) minutes were cut. THIRTY SIX MINUTES. So the movie was like 68 minutes long or something. Hahaha.

Saw the unrated cut a few weeks later and thought (still think) it's probably the best horror movie ever made.

Haha, this movie's on blu-ray? I didn't care for this movie at all, really, aside from the egg, haha.

jon boy 10.09.2010 06:54 PM

it was ok but not anywhere near as good as the first one and it felt like several films in one.

atsonicpark 10.09.2010 07:27 PM

Shia LeDouche.

Ugh.

I liked In the Realm of the Senses. Even though it was basically two hours of two nymphos, I found it pretty compelling. Well acted and well shot. That one scene with the umbrellas in the rain is short but gorgeous. Oshima's pretty cool.

I recently watched Tropical Malady. Holy shit, I loved it! Not to be hyperbolic, but that second half was unlike anything I've ever seen. Too bad the current dvd release is kinda shitty. Hoping Criterion get their hands on it.

atsonicpark 10.09.2010 07:57 PM

I like Oshima just fine, but that movie just... yeah. I dunno, I guess I'm just not a fan of watching people fuck for hours.

Tropical Malady is a masterpiece, definitely. I don't think Criterion will ever release it -- their releases tend to be pretty obvious. That director is amazing... BLissfully Yours is great, and Syndromes and a Century is one of the best films of all time. Amazing guy, wish I could pronounce his name -- his nickname is JOE.
