saw a bunch of showtime movies these past weeks

among them:

*everything everywhere etc*
was great, very funny, and i like that the multiverse bullshit was not taken seriously but was rather a conceit for an overwhelmed multitasker too caught up in self flagellation. so ultimately it was a funny feel good family movie with dildo jokes. and michelle yeoh is so fucking badass.

*richard pryor: omit the logic* great documentary about someone who needs no introduction

*american gigolo*
i had heard about this all my life and did not pay it any mind because it was sold as a "richard gere" movie. but who gives a fuck about richard gere (his middle name is tiffany), it's a PAUL SCHRADER movie! hahahhaa. with a GIORGIO MORODER soundtrack derived from BLONDIE! wtf, why nobody ever told me. so anyway it's the same movie basically as LIGHT SLEEPER and also THE CARD COUNTER. same type of character, similar troubles, similar structure. is repetitive? not really. i like it when an artist has characteristic themes and variations. my favorite one is still light sleeper, i think, because of willem dafoe, that guy fucking rules.

paul schrader also appears in the richard pryor docu btw.

If it'd lead to getting an enema performed by Traci Lind, I'd consider it.

Van Helsing 2004

This was fine. Very gory. Not a ton of story. Could have been better but there are worse ways to spend one’s time.

This was OK. It has less Woody Harrelson and more diarrhea and vomit than one would expect.

!@#$%! 03.19.2023 11:40 AM

goddamn, i has no idea guardians of the galaxy was considered "visionary" these days. the only vision i recall from it was zoe saldaña. otherwisethat movie is just another forgettable superhero turd for me.

that cannes one, i've seen it for rent... hmm... i'm curious now.

--

anyway i saw hal hartley's "amateur" on criterion. very 90s, very hartleyesque dialogue, highly recognizable soundtrack, 100% enjoyable.

couldn't find a suitable film poster on the interwebs but that's the back of the soundtrack cd

oh finally here's one:

Yesterday evening I watched The Matrix Reloaded, and right after it was finished, my TV died!

It only shows a black screen ....
so I bought a new one today, but it will be delivered on Wednesday. Bummer, because the Dutch classic football match Ajax - Feyenoord was this afternoon, which Feyenoord won for the first time since nearly twenty years
Instead I watched some music documentaries that I still had on my PC, including this one: The Great Hunger:The Life & Songs Of Shane MacGowan

The TV was 11 years old, so it's about time for an upgrade :) It's still a limited upgrade from 40" to 55" and LED, the OLED and whatever is just way too expensive.

Glad I could entertain :)

Hanzo The Razor : Sword of Justice
One of Tarantino's faves (fitting as he is a sexual deviant)

Can see how many shots and setups tarantino stole for Kill Bill.

What is wrong with japan? late 70's japanese films are so RAPEY. Hanzo rapes women to "interrogate" them.

It was gross, and repulsive, and I stopped it about 2/3 of the way through.

Made me feel gross, like maybe Tarantino and Weinstein watched it together jerking each other off.

Rob Instigator 03.22.2023 01:41 PM

Wife and I have been watching some classics we never got to see.

This was a good film. Beautifully filmed. Glad they only hinted at the rapes.

Killer Party (1986)

_tunic_ 04.11.2023 11:10 AM

good movie, it's French and very unlike the usual Hollywood courtroom drama's
it's annoying that at the end of it all, you still don't know who really done it (sorry, spoiler alert)
but great acting

I've seen a bunch of movies that I didn't share here, perhaps they will come. Loads of '40 & '50's movies on Netflix

Skuj 04.11.2023 02:46 PM

Parasite. Fucking brilliant film.

No enemas in this one, but anything Traci wanted to do to me, circa Fright Night Part 2 would also be acceptable.

Btw, watching Fright Night Part 2.

"Doctor this is highly irregular"

Of course, on an enema...

tw2113 04.28.2023 11:33 PM

Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.

tw2113 04.28.2023 11:34 PM

Also watched the Fright Night remake from 2011 last night. It was alright, but nothing I'm intentionally keeping in the end. Will see how the Fright Night 2 remake works out...

This was really good, from the director of The Lure.

Cocteau's ORPHEUS

HBO has some great TCM content. Wife and I have been watching old classic I had not yet seen.

Orpheus is fucking AWESOME

Rob Instigator 05.10.2023 02:35 PM

The intro alone is fucking genius.

Severian 05.13.2023 09:28 PM

Heat.

It was fine

1931 Dracula, in celebration of World Dracula Day today

Rob Instigator 05.30.2023 09:27 AM

watched MARNIE
weird film. chicks all fucked up. Trauma and ptsd and triggers everywhere. Internal terror, not birds, or monsters.

watched 007 THUNDERBALL, the most violent and least silly of the Bond flicks.

tw2113 06.03.2023 09:54 PM

New rewatch of Pump Up The Volume

Severian 06.04.2023 06:35 AM

Magic Mike’s Last Dance (it was dumb but I like Soderbergh)

tw2113 06.10.2023 08:35 PM

Batman and Robin.

it has high ratings on imdb, and got several award wins and nominations as well. But it left me a bit underwhelmed.

very stupid, but enjoyable at the same time.

I had forgotten that this actually happened. They made a good movie out of it. But I don't like seeing planes crash into buildings anymore ....

yes that's the one. According to imdb it has 33 wins and 53 nominations (and not the razzie ones), Maybe there were no other movies in 2010/2011?

Last night I watched one of the older Transformers movies, too lazy to look up which one. It's the one with the robots shooting at each other. Those stories are so lame if you think about it. US army is bombing the pyramids in Egypt and nobody is complaining about it.

Rob Instigator 06.14.2023 10:00 AM

Been on a violent movie kick with the wife.

watched OG Terminator, and then Terminator 2. OG Term is perfect. Terminator 2 used to annoy me cuz of furlong and his voice, but then I read his voice chnaged from day one filming so they had to pitch correct his voice. makes sense.

watched Blood Simple. Had not seen it since college. EXCELLENT movie. beautiful and violent and strange.

I watched LOTR fellowship extended cut again. 4 hours.

tw2113 06.14.2023 07:57 PM

I have the first two Terminators on my to watch soon list as well

Antagon 06.15.2023 06:18 AM

I really liked it. I feel like this is one of those instances where the acting can make or break the storytelling aspect. It's thanks to Giamatti (snubbed hard) and Thomas Haden Church's great performances that those characters don't just come across as massive assholes, but have a few human touches here and there. It's tough to be invested in a plot involving a self-absorbed snob and a perpetual wife-cheating horndog if they don't exude something humane and likeable too. And the two managed to tread that fine line. Hell, Giamatti even managed to make me really feel sorry for the guy and somewhat root for him by the end. I'm repeating myself, but he was done so dirty by the Academy. Virginia Madsen was great too.

I was actually surprised by just how much the third installment of the series moved me. The latest Antman earlier this year was a baffling mess. And the reviews I'd read in advance were rather polarizing. There were some tonal issues here and there, but overall, Gunn's final entry in the MCU is incredibly cohesive in its thematic throughline and made with a lot of love and care. It's also quite dark - something that apparently peeved a few of the reviewers. But I think it was apt. It's quite intense at times and it needs to be. Gunn crafted a lovely and quite emotional farewell to one of his most popular creations. Warmly recommended.

Rob Instigator 06.16.2023 08:31 AM

I saw the last ant man. It was a bit messy, but I thought it was a cool looking flick and fun.
