My wife hates it because she can't stand "theater people".

I know them, so it felt spot on, their vainglorious ego.

From imdb's Trivia page:
Each of this movie's 65,000 frames is an oil painting on canvas, using the same technique as Vincent van Gogh, created by a team of one hundred painters.

It's very nicely done, but the animation does distract from the story a bit.

I live very nearby where Vincent grew up but never bothered to visit the museum over there, or any of the remaining sites. When I was young, the only times we used to visit that village was because it had a very good Chinese restaurant.

After that I watched Last Witch Hunter with Vin Diesel :D

I wanted to stream the new Dune, but can't yet without paying. So I watched the old one.
Very weird, sort of like a merge between Dr. Who and Tremors. Bizarrely cheap looking special effects.
Sting plays one of the bad guys :D

Definitely wouldn't be starting on reading the book because of this movie, if I hadn't already read it

I saw a tweet a few months ago where someone said they'd been to a bar that was playing Lynch Dune and Villeneuve Dune on two TVs right next to each other.

Severian 09.26.2023 09:23 AM

I watched No One Can Save You on Hulu. Pretty good.

it's got some very funny moments. I loved Scarlett Johansson in it. A but weird that they even put Jonah Hill on the poster, his role is very minimal
I just looked at the cast on imdb. Didn't even recognise Frances McDormand, she had one of the best parts.
I never heard of Alden Ehrenreich before (not a name to easily forget even). A bit strange that he got such a big part in such a star casted film. He was good though.

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension

what? yeah exactly :D

Adventurer, brain surgeon, rock musician Buckaroo Banzai and his crime-fighting team, the Hong Kong Cavaliers, must stop evil alien invaders from the eighth dimension who are planning to conquer Earth.

it's very eighties, Jeff Goldblum has an insanely weird outfit, even for that era. For the rest, it's sort of Dr. Who meets Hitchhikers Guide, something like that. Entertaining, but not that much more.

A really well-put-together talking heads doc that actually keeps the talking heads at a minimum and instead opts to recreate a lot of the anecdotes with comic strip-esque animatics. There is a suprisingly large amount of Rowland S. Howard giving his side of things as well, considering he passed away in 2009. The documentary must have been in production for a long time. Lydia Lunch and Thurston Moore do get to say a few things too.

It was a rollercoaster ride. The way The Birthday Party approached making music and touring was downright headache-inducing. They were absolutely fated to burn out that way. Amazing music though. Hearing all the sweet tunes in context made me want to play them at my events again - I put a bit of a break on that, because for a while I played them quite often.

Great, inspired music, very talented people. Also: Massive egos. I kind of don't like Nick Cave, even though I love The Birthday Party and can appreciate his talent given certain arrangements (Not that big a fan of his later stuff as a whole, though there are a few bangers here and there; I always preferred Rowland there.).

I had recorded both Red Sparrow and Black Swan from TV some time ago. Yesterday I decided to watch them, but I had forgotten what this movie was really about. Thinking that it's a movie about a ballet dancer, well it isn't. Normally I like these types of movies, about Russian undercover spy operations, but this one was a bit too much for me, too much gore, too much mutilations etc.

Amazing movie, she definitely earned her Oscar for this one.
I'll definitely want to watch it again, going to buy it on DVD/BluRay whatever. Bloody commercial breaks were all at the wrong moments and it seemed the TV broadcast had cut off the ending. I always hate it when there are no end credits at all, but that's waste of time for the TV broadcasters who much rather spend it by airing useless commercials.

Kind of weird that this movie was sponsored by McDonald's

ugh, those dialogues I really can't stand the way they are talking in this movie (and basically most of these superhero movies). They all speak in a sort of groaning way, that annoys the hell out of me

Rob Instigator 10.09.2023 10:44 AM

I found that Batman film so dull.

They could have cut about an hour

also watched The NIGHT HOLDS TERROR

based ona true incident. John Cassavettes first film role. Ernest Borgnine plays an Amish man.

it's a cool movie, but I didn't like it as much as the above poster.
It reminded me a lot of (the editing style of) Natural Born Killers, it's got so many fragments shortly after another that doesn't seem really related to each other at all. Which does makes it an interesting watch, but also chaotic.

Rob Instigator 10.19.2023 01:19 PM

When a poster says "Pure cinema" it means they could not afford a good editor

Severian 10.20.2023 05:06 AM

Bit of an overly meditative bucket of shit I reckon

i'm watching the entire hal hartley retrospective on criterion. so good. even the not so good ones are good and better than most. "you people" (lol) might know him for this scene:

https://youtu.be/Vgb8CyrgppI

that's a very funny movie, the musical number is meant to be comedic.

anyway, the girl from monday is probably his weakest feature, but i still liked the attempt.

hartley is having a kickstarter currently for his next movie. if you kick in $10k you can be exec producer.

also rewatching old almodóvar films on mubi. i might just rewatch the entire lot, because there are some i've missed.

and i finally found kika in it! which was banned in america or something. the rape scene is not as funny as i remembered it, because rape is never funny (in theory), and after all we know now it comes across as super cringe, but it still ends up a being little funny, because it ends in totally absurd slapstick.

i mean, who else would dare try to make rape funny? only john waters, i think.

so the real rapists of the movie are not the sex rapists (well, they are too), but the relentless fucking tv tabloids willing to rape anything and anyone for ratings.

but anyway, i like kika as a character. she keeps going despite all disappointments, setbacks and betrayals. she's naive but good. and people are such fucking assholes, lol.

Baseketball :D

good movie.
whatever they did with Johnny's face drew me off a bit, but it's not too distracting to the story.
not sure if they did something, perhaps it's just his natural face that draws me off :)

also:

Amazon Prime has it listed as The Crime Boss though, which is apparently the Australian title.
It's ok, want's to be a tarantino-fargo like movie but doesn't reach that level.

Rewatching Us for the first time since 2019.

I still really like it. I’ll finish it tonight and then I’ll know whether it’s still my favorite Peele movie.

I think it’s definitely the scariest. It’s genuinely quite fucking terrifying.

Jordan Peele gave the cast 11 horror films to watch so they would have "a shared language" when filming: Jaws (1975), Dead Again (1991), The Shining (1980), The Babadook (2014), It Follows (2014), A Tale of Two Sisters (2003), The Birds (1963), Funny Games (1997), Martyrs (2008), Let the Right One In (2008), and The Sixth Sense (1999).

I did not know this but that totally tracks.

Also Let The Right One In is one of the best movies of all time, horror or otherwise.

On Thursday I watch Rocky Horror Picture show for the first time! It was with a shadow cast, since the allies group at my college does it every year. There was a costume contest too, and it was a lot of fun!
