the local video store was having a sale on used vhs and dvds so i bought el topo and holy mountain on dvd each for about 8$

atsonicpark 07.25.2008 12:53 PM

both of those films are too good for existence

EMMAh 07.25.2008 01:52 PM

Night at the Museum.

I'd seen it twice before so I was falling asleep this time.

It's good, but there's only so many times I can watch a movie like that.

gmku 07.25.2008 02:36 PM

Nobody Lives Forever. Another damned sexy old movie.

gmku 07.25.2008 03:33 PM

Anybody watch the same movie over and over obsessively? At what point do you give it up? I'm having trouble getting over my obsession with certain movies--is this natural or should I worry that I'll slip into a schizophrenic state where I can no longer separate my reality from movie fantasy?

atsonicpark 07.25.2008 03:36 PM

To me, that's only happened with dead zone, el topo, tetsuo, blow out, taxi driver... Those 4 movies I watched over and over again, by myself and with friends for a good year. I just didn't want to leave that atmosphere. So, it's normal.

gmku 07.25.2008 03:41 PM

I guess that's the beauty of movies. You can live in them, in a sense. Much like looking at good art or listening to good music, you can appreciate new things in each experience as well as relive the wonder of the first encounter.

God, I do blather.

I could live for days on North by Northwest, for example. As well as Casino Royale. I seem to get sucked into the thrillers.

Rob Instigator 07.25.2008 03:45 PM

My college roommate used to watch UNNECESARY ROUGHNESS (with scott bakula and Sinbad) over and over and over again. He muist have watched it about 12 times ina 5 day period.

gmku 07.25.2008 03:46 PM

Wow. Well, I have to admit, I could probably recite the scripts to those two movies I mentioned above.

gmku 07.25.2008 07:20 PM

I've been watching Casino Royale since about 3 this afternoon. It's on Showtime and I have the "start over" feature. I keep getting interupted or distracted so I've restarted it about 4 times now.

I thought it was excellent. It was realistic, disturbing and yet had a very good use of social commentary as well as sort of pointed injokes at fans of so-called "torture-porn." Stylistically, it's great. Wide shots, stationary cameras, no music create a realistic feel... then all the sudden the "fourth wall" is broken for a moment. (you'll see).

And all the acting was great (no surprises there, great cast). See it.

Like I said before, the new version should be avoided at all costs. The cast in the original nail it.
Haneke's films are all good in my opinion. Benny's Video is another must see.

I watched this again.

Derek 07.26.2008 05:19 AM

El Topo.

I don't know what to rate it, I'd really need to give it a few more watchings.

yes, the phantom of liberty really reminded of the monty python. it might not be his most memorable masterpiece, but i really enjoyed it. as mentioned in the bunuel thread, i really liked the section about the girl who had "disappeared", but also the other sections, like the one with the postcards... is that also the one where people sit on toilets for dinner and go to the restroom to eat?... it's a nice movie, and not only because of the comedic side.

have you watched "belle de jour" yet? this one is also great, maybe his more classic movie, but from what i can remember, it's really one of his best... i might actually see it again tomorrow with some friends.

in any case, el angel exterminador is certainly one of my faves from him (as i probably mentioned it before in that other thread).

atsonicpark 07.26.2008 06:24 PM

lynch is maybe too talented.

atsonicpark 07.26.2008 06:31 PM

oh, saw the new x-files movie

loved the show but can't reccomend this at all

5/10

acousticrock87 07.26.2008 06:32 PM

I really want to start watching the X-Files. I haven't seen an episode in my life.

yeah the disappearing girl and the toilet scenes were great. and not only for the comedic aspect of it.
i also like the monks playing poker and the S&M bit.
i need to see belle de jour. i need to see all his films. are there any to stay away from?

atsonicpark 07.26.2008 06:33 PM

they have every box set at ... ugh .. walmart for $20.

probably cheaper online.

It's.. I dunno. It's definitely not a SATISFYING show, in that it never resolves almost anything, and it kind of leaves you in the dark often.. at the same time, it's never as confusing as something like, um, Twin Peaks or something (not that I find Twin Peaks confusing -- just, you know, it's obviously not something you'd show to your grandma and grandpa and hope they understand what's going on).

Just realize that most the answers you want, you'll never get, and it's an amazing show ;)

i watched a trailer of the new version, and it was really confusing, the exact same shots than the original version... as far as i understand, it is supposed to be that way, but does the new version bring at least a little something different?... i also watched a small interview with Haneke about the new version, and I must say he sounded really unconvincing: i am not even sure if i can remember what his main point was... bring this film/story again to american audiences because they did not pay attention to the original Ötzi version??

i don't think there is any to stay away from. out of the movies i've seen from him, the ones i liked the least were "los olvidados" and "tristana", but i've only seen them once, and - as mentioned previously - when i watched "los olvidados", it was really not in the best conditions...

both were still enjoyable and i still intend to watch them again... if you do watch them in the coming weeks, i'd be interested to know about your opinion... if only to motivate me to watch them again!

viewtiful_alan 07.27.2008 01:15 AM

This is many people's favorite movie...?
Over indulgent, often incoherent trash.
I'm sorry but Edward Norton spouting off psuedo poetic, overly metaphorical babble is not my idea of a good time.
The characters are fucking awful, the plot is borderline incoherent... fail.
ANd yes I am aware that my rep bar is about to turn red.

Sonic Youth 37 07.27.2008 01:19 AM

A lot of people hate that movie, so fear not for your rep.
I've seen it a few times, but I'm not mad over it.

viewtiful_alan 07.27.2008 01:20 AM

Haha I just had such high expectations.... I thought it would be a perfect mix of introspection and action...
but no, not at all. XD

Sonic Youth 37 07.27.2008 01:29 AM

It's far from perfect, to say the least.

viewtiful_alan 07.27.2008 01:32 AM

To say the least..
ah the irony of an anti-capatalistic big budget hollywood production starring a-listers...

Sonic Youth 37 07.27.2008 01:33 AM

The only big plus is that it allows me to ramble off rules a la Fight Club at any given point during the day.
