try a polarising filter, however i cant remember whether that will enhance or get rid of the rainbow completely. they get rid of reflections in glass etc and enhance cloudy skys...

and looks like you had you whitebalance set on indoor, hence the yellow hue...

looking glass spectacle 06.01.2009 06:18 PM

thanks for the tip. i will have to remember to always carry one with me... i think your right about the white balance... i was so worried it would fade before i could take a picture i didn't even think to check.

No, those are not edited at all. It's all straight from the film. I used cross-process (shooting on diapositives and developing it as regular film), which is the reason for the pictures having such weird colours.
Smena 8m is actually one of the cheaper are widely more available old russian Lomo-type cameras. I think you can get many of them on eBay.

15 EUR = $21

Eos 50D, canon el cheapo 50mm f1.8 II. Aperture at 1.8, 1/125 at iso100, spot metering, auto WB, and manual. edit: it is an aps-c sensor close to full 35mm frame but no cigar. I couldn't afford the $5000 for the 5D mkIII, so had to settle for the $1800 for the body of the 50D.

Long time no see here Toko!!!

I wish I could pretend that I have a clue what all that means.

aperture: bigger the number= smaller hole to let through light
smaller the number= bigger hole to let through light

iso is the digital version of what asa is for film cameras: 100 iso less sensitive to light, 3200 iso more sensitive to light, my camera goes up to 12800 but gets very grainy that high.

shutter speeds vaary alot that particular photo i used 1/125th of a second so quite fast, however my camera varies from 1/8000th of a sec to unlimited time with the bulb setting.

metering, most camera have different ways of metering, i tend to use spot metering which meters in a small spot in the dead centre of the lens, then i meter for midtones to try and get fairly even exposure over the frame. depends what you are going for though, the circus shots i took that are a few pages back in this thread the metering said i was two stops under exposed.

if you care, that is about the extent of my camera knowledge. Tokolosh is the man when it comes to that stuff here...

Actually, iso is international standard and asa is simply american standard. There really isn't a difference anymore, though there may have been in the past I would think(before my time perhaps, and this sector of my knowledge is not currently in high use). Both originate in film though, and digital is just an adaption of such standards for light sensitivity. :)

cute slavo! My gawd, I'd have far too many cameras if my pockets were deep enough. I always want to bring home the interesting looking oldies from the junk/tip stores.

*offers some artistic nude modeling services*

I am now *half* blushing.

no, I'm *fully* blushing.

you want me to book first flight to the Oz? ;)

phoenix 06.02.2009 08:54 AM

Oz is quite cold this time of year, is there some other warm destination??

_slavo_ 06.02.2009 09:17 AM

It's rather warm in here now, but we have no sea nor the ocean, so let's pick something else for the *cough* private photo shoot.

St. Helena island?

phoenix 06.02.2009 09:26 AM

hmmm, it looks lovely, though very uninhabited.. can we organise a tipi and fire or something? pillows? doona?

_slavo_ 06.02.2009 09:39 AM

I was gonna go for Tristan de Cunha island (the most isolated place on Earth that's inhabited by people) but thought it might be too weird for you, so I chose this one instead.

Teepee, yes, definitely. Fire and pillows too. That all might look good on the distorted pics from my camera.

And you'd be wearing this:

This thread is going in an unexpected direction, definitely.

phoenix 06.02.2009 09:53 AM

oh the other island looks quite pretty too(googled). I could definately visit remote places. Eventually I'd need mainland supplies though. Imagine the stars at a place like that! No light from anywhere to ruin it. woah.

Yr chosen dress is longer than I'm used to, but is acceptable due to its elven like qualities :P Am I wearing this before or after the artistic nude photo session?

sigh. what a lovely holiday..

Oh yes, the night sky is the most impressive thing, ... and imagine on a place like that. I'd even smuggle a bottle of red wine for you to feel more comfortable.

Before, most definitely. To set the mood, y'know ;) .
I chose the dress to be in compliance with the general amosphere of the scene.

I want to go there. Now.

phoenix 06.02.2009 10:12 AM

I've actually been here quite a lot lately.
A bit sad...

The 50D is nice.
Close to full 35 is close enough.

The Canon 5D is pretty awesome. 21 megapixel and it shoots full HD at 30fps/16:9/1080p.
Good sharp footage as long as you don't pan.
The jello is horrible and there's still a lot of noise in the shadows.
It's the mkII, btw. :-)

The new Pana GH1 seems to be the better choice for video work right now.
Not too keen on the AVCHD format though.

Anyways, this or that way, the photoshoot is going to happen. ;)

new firmware out

http://web.canon.jp/imaging/eosd/fir.../firmware.html

Firmware Version 1.1.0 incorporates the following improvements and fixes.
  1. Includes a function to enable the manual exposure setting when shooting movies. *For details on how to use this function, please download the PDF files from the bottom of this page.
  2. Disables the function of the depth-of-field preview button when images are played back or when the menu screen is displayed on the LCD panel.
  3. Fixes a phenomenon where the peripheral illumination of images cannot be properly corrected, even if the images were captured with the lens peripheral illumination correction function set to Enable. *Digital Photo Professional software version 3.6.1 or later (for Windows and Macintosh) can be used to automatically correct the peripheral illumination of RAW and JPEG images that were captured in the Peripheral illumination correction setting with cameras that have Firmware Version 1.0.7 or earlier.
  4. Fixes the algorithms of the Auto Lighting Optimizer function when Custom Function C.Fn II-3 Highlight tone priority is enabled.
  5. Fixes incorrect indications on the Arabic, Romanian, Spanish, and Ukrainian menu screens.
  6. Changes the battery information displayed on the camera when using the optional Battery Grip BG-E6.

Tokolosh 06.03.2009 06:51 AM

That firmware sure is an improvement fpr the 5D, nicfit. Much needed from what I've heard.

_slavo_ 06.03.2009 07:18 AM

Tokolosh, the last batch is just unbelievably beautiful, all four of them.
