All cultures come to a Civilization phase, an autumn when this breaks down. Mega-cities are characteristic of this time. Politics is motivated by money, and move through Imperialism and the Period of Contending States to Caesarism, a period of despots. Science no longer reaches certainties. People no longer accept common principles or goals, they fight all rules from the past. The arts, rather than working in ways that seem obvious to the artists and the people, follow fashions with constant changes of style. Later in this culture after a period of atheism, people turn to a religious renewal based on the religion developed in the spring of the culture.

Spengler sees our culture as having finished its summer in about 1800--1770 in literature and with Wagner in music. He views developments in all the arts as evidence of decadence. His advice to those living in the Civilization phase is to look for the direction of movement and contribute positively to it--the Civilization will move in the direction of its Destiny, regardless of our choices. We can choose to contribute or to have no impact.

When Good Kids KILL by Michael D. Kelleher

tesla69 12.08.2010 06:09 PM

finished rereading Once Were Cops by Ken Bruen yesterday after finishing James Crumley The Final Country on MOnday. Now rereading Dia De Los Muertos by Kent Harrington

I'm going through all my books because I've run out space and getting rid of a bunch, sadly, I just don't have room. so I'm rereading a bunch to see if they get saved or not. I've got at least 3 boxes that need to go to the Strand...

(the Crumley stays, the Bruen goes...)

Is this a fiction book. A close friend of mine had something very similar. It just documented as many cases of children killing people as it could. It was very creepy and way too interesting.

I am reading

Ha, no, it's actually non-fiction true crime cases involving murder by children and young adults. Really intriguing stuff, a definite page turner.

Nice choice on HEavy Liquid btw. I read through those. Loved it.

I read that when i was 15, which is 10 years ago. The things it tells you are things you can know just through some elementary internet research.

unlike Cross' other books on Kurt, this one is actually decent because it focuses on art and music, not Cross' own confused biographical interpretation of Kurt (which tends to overemphasize depression/suicide and finds it in every nook and cranny of Kurt's life which is not very accurate at all)
There are a lot of really cool Nirvana paraphanelia reproductions like fliers, stickers, hand bills, scribbled notes, photographs, etc etc. There are also a lot of really good pictures in there making it well worth the clearance section pricing I found it..

This has to be one of the greatest books I have ever read in my entire life. It is the most sublime mix of intellectualism, humor, history, theology, Holy Tradition, architecture, and is perhaps one of the best written books as well in regards to sophistication, coherence, depth, insight, and fluidity of multiple converging subjects.

Thoroughly agree on both books, although those are the only two I've read by him.

I just finished my first Haruki Murakami book (The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle) and I'm really eager on reading more by him.

You know you are really into a writer when you can't put his/her book down and are down to 2-3 hours of sleep each night as a result of it.

I just read the first 3 volumes of Biomega. These were actually the first manga I have ever read. I can't say that all the ones the "kids" are reading appeal to me, but Biomega is an awesome sci-fi horror story that has zombies, awesome art work, and a kick ass grizzly bear.....so, you can't really go wrong there.

Anybody know of any other good horror manga in this vein??
