About to watch...

PS: Can't believe the praise for the NOES remake. Writing was so sloppy, and it was despairingly charmless. BLEGH Like when that kid shot those uppers into his leg....pffffttt lulz

Yeah, but it was hilarious. It was one of the worst films ever, but also one of the most entertaining. I'd take it over, I dunno, THE RING, or some other awful garbage. I was seriously laughing harder during Nightmare on Elm Street than any film I can recall since Freddy Got Fingered. And to be honest, all those movies are pretty damn comedic, aside from 1 and New Nightmare. It's all about Freddy's one liners and soul pizza. I find it harder to believe anyone would take any of the sequels seriously. I love this whole remake thing. Let's remake more movies! Let's remake SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION next! You know? Let's not stop there! Let's remake books, too! I mean, the whole thing is so absurd to me that I can't help but be amused.

ANGST (aka FEAR aka SCHIZOPHRENIA) - 9/10

Weird ass camera work, strange atmosphere, music by KLAUS SCHULZE.

Film director Gaspar Noe has cited Angst as an influence on his filmmaking style. He has been quoted several times talking about the film:
  • "There's another film called "Angst" or "Fear" which in France was called "Schizophrenia" but it was banned theatrically. It's got an X-rating so it never came out. It could maybe come out today. It's Austrian. One of the masterpieces of the decade. The director never did another movie though. He had too many debts so he stopped directing."
  • "Then there's an Austrian movie, Angst. It's about a man killing a family just in order to go back to prison, where he felt better. It's like a very dark, European version of Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer, but much more baroque in its filming. It was banned all over the world - even in France it was one of the last movies to be X-rated for extreme violence. I think it's going to be rediscovered everywhere in the next few years."
Anyway, this is indispensible, if you're into films like MANIAC and HENRY and other classics and want to see an obscure, lost classic.. check it out.

Best italian movie ever from the best italian director ever.

I've seen L'Eclisse and do love it. I'll pick up Il Divo in the week. Really looking forward to seeing it.

Perhaps the thing for me is that I was never that big a fan of the original. I prefer it to the remake but not by much. The main difference for me was Robert Englund. He gave Freddy that extra dimension and him not being involved made it necessary for the director to find a different focal point - namely the kids. I actually liked the new emphasis on their attempts to stay awake - especially the point where they realise they'll eventually die of sleep deprivation. Given the change in social climate I suppose they had to treat the child murderer aspect with a little more sensitivity than happened in the original. I don't know if the way they treated it was particularly interesting but I can appreciate why they did it.

I suppose my main gripe with the remake, especially given its new emphasis on the kids, was how forgettable they all were. Heather Langenkamp's Nancy was great, a very 'ordinary' hero compared with Rooney Mara's more fashionably 'edgier' one.

Overall though, purely as a horror film, maybe the remake was better. Although not as enjoyable as the original, I certainly found it scarier.

atsonicpark 01.25.2011 10:02 AM

Right on. I think neither the original or the remake are that remarkable -- the original has a more interesting story behind it, since no one thought it was going to be popular, and getting it made seemed a bit hard, but eh. The remake was honestly more entertaining, if for all the wrong reasons. And like I explained with previous "landmark" horror movies like LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT (I'd probably give it a 3/10 -- one part bumbling cop show, one part girls pissing themselves so parents get revenge em, no part entertainng to watch) and I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE (maaaaaaaaaybe a 5/10; cool atmosphere, no music whee!, WAY too long, gets by only on backwoods atmosphere since there's no substance)...... uh.. I rate films on entertainment only, not how "important" they are or any other factors.

NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET remake, as a film, is a 0/10. As a device to entertain me, it's a lot better.

my favourite NOES is probably the third one, i like the premise and the setting more than the other ones

the funniest is the second one i think. when freddy appears at that pool party outwith a dream it just got stupidly hilarious.

Sorry, but no way is your 3/10 a reflection of the film so much as a response to its reputation. I don't for a second believe you'd have given it a 3/10 had it come out of nowhere, so while you say you're not judging it on how important it is, in a negative sense isn't that exactly what you're doing. You're penalising it for its 'classic' status. I'm all in favour of questioning the validity of that status but I mean come on, you gave Ghost Writer a 7/10. Ghost Writer, ffs!

atsonicpark 01.25.2011 03:03 PM

Eh. I saw it when I was 15, not really aware of its "importance" or whatever. I bought it, MANIAC, Sleepaway Camp, DEMONS, Opera, and a bunch of other films from Big Lots over the course of a few weeks. It was the only one I didn't care for in the lot. I don't like Wes Craven much, anyway, and I didn't realize it was an "important" film until I started using the internet (until I was 18 or so, I was only able to use the internet a few times a week, at the library or school, and most websites were blocked and I certainly never used it to look up how "landmark" of a film LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT was).

If anything, it was a reaction against my friend for advising me to buy it. Good thing he also advised me to buy MANIAC and was right-on.

My 15-year-old self may have rated it 5. I haven't watched it since then, granted. I'll give it another go eventually. But yeah from my memory I think it sucks. Why watch it when you can watch 10/10 MANIAC, 9/10 Angst, 9/10 Last House on Dead End Street, etc?!

noisereductions 01.25.2011 03:36 PM

why watch any movie when there's probably a better movie out there?

tesla69 01.25.2011 03:39 PM

No, the question is "Why waste your time with garbage when you could watch better movies from the same genre?" But close enough, I guess.

It really doesn't bother me if someone wants to watch bad movies though. It's their loss, really.

MAN -- this movie sucked, didn't it? Ferrara has really let me down. This movie ,Mary, 'R X-Mas, New rose Hotel, etc...

It's too bad. Ms. 45, Bad Lieutenant, King of NY, Driller Killer, the Funeral, and the Addiction are all EXCELLENT. He's really fell off.

Have you ever listened to any of his commentaries though? He's fucking hilarious.
