I went on a bit of a halloumi binge over Christmas. Not psychedelic in the least, but very nice anyway.

Could the psychedelic cheese thing be related to the idea that eating cheese before bed will give you weird dreams? That often happens to me.

Yes, I believe so. I know that all cheese contains certain stimulants that enhance the hypnagogic stage (a friend did his Psychology BA dissertation on this subect), and generally speaking, eating anything before bedtime will increase the REM stage of sleep (because your body's processing things, it has more stimulation than during 'lay' times).

But I read (somewhere, forgotten in a most convenient fashion) that because cheese is made in a related fashion to the process of putrefaction/ decay which makes mushrooms in nature, cheese, particularly of the Stilton types, where something non-milky is inserted as 'veins' into the cheese, can produce psychedelic elements.

Feta isn't something I'm terribly fond of, unless it's with a salad or something. That's utterly reprehensible. I'm quite, quite disgusted by that. Surely there's still McDonalds/ Burger King (etc) adverts on all year round? I think we, the cheese lovers, and the cheese companies (except for babybel, they can fuck right off) should pull together and storm parliament, demanding our rights to fine cheeses.



I've gone far too long without Roquefort. We had some in recently, sort of left it for a few weeks, and it went all watery and weird and had a taste that, quite literally, made me see God. I may have mentioned it once or thrice already in this thread.

Does anyone know of the alleged 'psychedelic' cheeses? I read somewhere that there are generally-available cheeses which contain similar properties to mushrooms (psycheglobin? [sp?]).


i do recall hearing something about certain cheese cultures that do that, i think there is something call ergot and it has a deriviative that can cuase hallucinations if taken in substantial amounts. we have a beer in australia that has it in it but it is shit beer and you would need to drink about 25 cartons

i know it might ruin my credibilility for future posts in this thread, but i actually like those little babybel things... then again, i guess it has to do with the fact that i had a lot of babybel as a child... at lunch at school, when we were going to some excursions with school... well, yes, that's certainly the reason why. same with vache-qui-rit, a nostalgy thing, i suppose...

Lysergic Acid is made from ergot. LSD was first snthesized during research on ergot.
I used to take Ergotamine (or something like that) for migraines years ago. It affects your blood vessels.

I don't know if ergot is in cheese.

Goat cheese is lovely, and under-appreciated by the masses. Welsh goats cheese is often very nice.
