that's the one about the white cynics yeah? i saw a bit of that when it came out. didn't know it had 3 or 4 seasons? i'm saying "white cynics" because their behavior looked to me very... "ethnic." Yeah ha ha. But anyway is it good? ======= just finished watching season 1 (should be the only season but whatever) of amazon's "i love dick" it's good and interesting and grownup and overall very funny. there are no goodies vs. baddies, there are no predictable outcomes, and everyone is more or less intelligent and complicated as fuck and very difficult to divine. not to say that there aren't irritating or seemingly stupid people/moments in it. not to say that i "agree" with everything that it shows/happens/etc. enjoying a piece of fiction should not be about finding validation in one's limited beliefs/postures/tastes. that's just narcissism. what i liked about the show was that it challenged and confused me constantly and it also made me laugh. was i laughing for the right reasons? i don't know. but it's good to be both challenged and entertained at the same time. it's usually an either/or proposition-- but not here. it was great. in a non-spectacular and non-rah-rah very low-key coffee-and-cigarettes-movie way but it was great. ... eta: truly polyphonic i guess also not really for bingeing cuz you need time to process ... also i should add: the woman who plays the main character (chris) is absolutely great in it ![]() i had seen her before in some tv shit like parks and rec and other stuff but didn't even know her name. which is kathryn hahn (first time for everything). she's fucking perfect in this part. |

I strangely like it, maybe vicarious living through someone else? Season 4 premieres in September. |

the way they do their thing though is very... ha ha ha... how can i explain. but im curious about it again. i should rewatch maybe. |
![]() Just finished the fourth season of Maron on Netflix and realized it was the last season. Now I'm sad. I'm going to miss that show. Fuck. ![]() Started Handmaid's Tale. Impressive in some ways, but I'm not nuts about the lead for some reason. Gonna have to pace myself with this one, as rape scenes are tough for me. Promising so far though. |
![]() fargo - season 3 |
^ not bad, I thought season 2 was the best so far.... we just finished season 1 of Ozark...Michael Bluth and Laura Linney money laundering criminals in Mo. Linney is pretty awesome, some great acting for her in it, but some real incongruities in the plot....

I really dig Fargo season 3.

Tried watching ROME on HBO but got about 30 minutes in and everyone talking in proper British accents made me turn it off.

Just started the first episode. Looks promising. I was able to see a bit of Laura Linney's butt cheek. Cannot fucking stand plot holes, though. Thanks for heads up. |
been watching some old "art of the western world" videos
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0363314/ from the late 80s, but apparently remain unsurpassed cuz they keep getting republished really enjoyed the one about romanesque and gothic architecture, which is the period i knew the least about. good to see those buildings from within instead of reading in the abstract |

no prejudice! Just wished they sounded more Roman! hahahhaha. |

This is a legit problem with a fuckton of shows and movies. Everyone in any historical time or place speaking in British accents because, I think, showrunners think, "Meh, it sounds fancy ... Rome was fancy... it'll be fine." |

The trailer intrigued me, but that may simply be because it featured "Wolves" as a signified of drama and ominousness. Is "Wolves" in the show? Oh well. I'll watch it eventually. |

you'd have to resurrect cinecittą and make it in italian and put subtitles on it. Quote:
nah nah nah. that's for infomercials. they always use some british accent to fool the unwary but rome was a bbc coproduction-- they specialize in period pieces, they have access to the best trained actors. and with hbo money, it's on sterioids--you should compare rome vs. i claudius and see the progress. i claudius was great too btw and so british sounding-- derek jacobi, john hurt, and the cheapest sets in the universe. it's so cheap you can't help to laugh at and admire the thing at the same time. |
I wish more shows were in Latin.
|
they still have trinitarian masses in some places. that's the most latin circus you can get i think
so i googled and turns out rome WAS filmed in cinecittą, and the sets burned out a few years ago can't get more roman than that (btw, nero didn't burn rome--it was the christians!) |
i've been watching, on and off, the very awful "the royals"
it's really terrible. so terrible that in fact it's good. provider of endless laughs. because somewhere in the mind of the makers of this thing, they fucking know they're exploiting the teeny bopper crowd this is aimed at. it's so completely ridiculous, it somehow works as a meta-joke about squeezing the audience for attention. ![]() preposterous! and yet watchable if you embrace the ridiculousness. and the terrible acting. and the absurd writing. and... yeah, awful, ha ha ha ha |
