Mine come and go in waves. I'll go months without getting any, but then one will pop up and it's like my fingers hate me, and I'll have five or six.

Cuticles are the dead layers of skin cells that surround the base and sides of fingernails

a hangnail is when the cuticle gets too dry and splits and peels back.
