I don't watch many movies. And lately I've disliked most of the ones I've viewed. I'm sour on the silver screen. Nothing is funny anymore, it's all pee jokes and people getting punched in the face. And that's supposed to make me laugh? No, I don't think so. Will Ferrell is a dunce and so many of these so-called comedians are about as funny as glue.

I'm surprised that people still enjoy movies. But then I saw this thread and saw that most people just post a picture of the film and there is no commentary on whether they liked it or not.

I applaud your effort though.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes- Really good, certainly an improvment on that Burton abomination.

dirty bunny 01.16.2012 12:22 AM

I think that Hollywood studios have gotten lazy and greedy. They throw every scrap of money they have into way fewer films. They're trying to engineer blockbusters, rather than taking a "shotgun" approach, spending less money on more films.

And you said as much in your post- many movies that were made just wouldn't get made today.

I appreciate your recommendations though.

From Dusk Till Dawn. First time watching it after its release back 1998. I watched with my dad on VHS. Ah, those were the days... love it

Take shelter.

Good but a bit disappointing. Very good acting though.

Another winner from Miike. I know ASP used to pan him quite a bit, but with work as exciting as this and Visitor Q in his filmography, I just can't figure out why.

Awesome flick, I thought - I guess it's considered one of Miike's 'weakest'... maybe I really do just have awful taste. Oh well ha

I didn't expect it to be so free and funny.

Saw Take Shelter; slight disappointment regarding the very end of the movie; Michael Shannon is something.

I've seen it and quite like it. I generally blow hot and cold with Argento. I've never completely disliked anything he's done but still don't think he's ever made a completely great film (Suspiria being my the closest, for me). A lot of even his most diehard fans seem to be quite down on Stendhal and it's definitely a bit clunky in parts, but I'd say that's true of pretty much all his films, including Suspiria.

So... even though he knows his shit when it comes to film, he's no exception when I say that sometimes people say things that are confusing. That's something I actually admired about this thread for a long time. People with different tastes demonstrating their perspective on a piece of work that you feel the complete opposite about. I do think it has become a canvas for posters with "liked it" "hated it" comments. That's ok I guess... I do that a lot too because in all honesty I often experience a film that is hard to explain. Sometimes it's difficult to post 5 paragraphs on a fucking movie that you "feel"... yet can't really grasp what made it so special to you. Usually those are the most compelling films to me. It isn't until a few watches that I can actually break it apart and be more aware of why it all articulates to form a masterpiece. So um... I guess my main point is that this place has introduced me to some great titles and has impressed me in many ways. It's rare for me in general to meet a person that puts so much thought into what they consume. This thread has demonstrated countless users that have genuine interest and passion in studying the history of cinema while looking forward as well.

regardless, I do think Gummo is pretty horrible. Or rather... it's OK. I have a lot of respect for it but it doesn't do much for me. I like what harmony was going for, but I think it failed to have any substance at all... which is why for the most part I was left kind of bored and didn't give a shit about what was happening. All of the characters are repulsive and it just wasn't entertaining to watch them pass time by being utter morons. I did enjoy when Korine was flirting with the faggot dwarf...

I have no clue whether he said that or not, lol... maybe you're thinkng of Trash Humpers??? That sounds more likely.

Personally, I love Gummo. I think ASP was sorta indifferent on it. We used to talk a lot about Korine.

I remember thinking this was pretty cool. Not necessarily one of my favorites, however - I'll always dig Phenomena the most.

demonrail666 01.23.2012 07:41 AM

I really have to watch Phenomena again. When I saw it I remember not being into it at all but that was a long time ago.

In the meantime, watched this last night:

Grand Hotel

Been on a bit of an early Hollywood kick lately. Not much to say about this other than if you like Hollywood glamour done to the absolute max this is pretty much as good as it gets.

I tend to agree. I did quite enjoy it but lots of it felt like a photoshoot for a style mag. Maybe that was Korine's intention, in which case fair play, but it all felt a bit too cooler-than-thou for its own good.
