There's "Sounds Like" and then there's "Possible Lawsuit."

"Mighty and Superior" by Conflict

Same as "Seven Nation Army," no?

The Soup Nazi 07.04.2013 01:41 PM

Bob Dylan's "Every Grain Of Sand" -> Richard Thompson's "Saving The Good Stuff For You"

The Soup Nazi 09.15.2013 09:46 PM

Johnny Cash's "Ring Of Fire" -> Bruce Springsteen's "We Are Alive"

Also, the bassline in Caitlin Rose's "No One To Call" sounds very similar to me to the last bass notes in The Replacements' "Swingin' Party".

Tim Buckley - Once I was / Neil Young - Razor love

The Soup Nazi 10.16.2013 07:04 PM

The end of PiL's "Annalisa" reminds me of Nirvana's "Radio Friendly Unit Shifter"'s last moments. (It's the other way around, I know).

The Soup Nazi 02.05.2014 05:35 PM

Judy Garland's "Over The Rainbow" -> David Bowie's "Starman"

The Velvet Underground's "Sister Ray" -> Wire's "Strange"

Also, the ryhthmic strumming on Lou's "Walk On The Wild Side" sounds a bit like a narcotically slowed-down version of Archie Bell & The Drells' "Tighten Up" to me.

The Soup Nazi 10.26.2014 06:18 PM

Bush Tetras' "Too Many Creeps" -> Sonic Youth's "Kool Thing" ("I don't wanna...")

Drjohnrock 12.11.2014 06:02 PM

Slob Seger's hit Still The Same "borrows heavily" from Creedence Clearwater Revival's Sailor's Lament--music, gambling theme in the lyrics...but probably changed just enough to avoid a lawsuit. More's the pity.

lucyrulesok 12.22.2014 06:18 AM

i always get reminded of songs when they reference like one particular specific thing in the lyrics

e.g. Jeffrey Lewis in Three Quarter Moon sings something like 'Put KY Jelly on your eyeball and you can look right into me, and I won't even feel a thing'

Always reminds me of Leonard Cohen singing 'You were KY Jelly, I was Vaseline'

There are heaps of examples of this but this is the one I always use since it was the first time Ir ealised that was why I would associate songs as being similar even when they didn't sound anything alike and also since I love bringing up KY Jelly in conversation cause I'm puerile in a v. juvenile way.

evollove 12.22.2014 09:00 AM

Hm. "Put jelly on your shoulder," sang Reed.

lucyrulesok 12.23.2014 04:53 AM

"she's like jellyroll like sculpture"

Lykke Li's No Rest for the Wicked.
Too blattant a reminder of DJohnston's Some Things Last a Long Time not to think she didn't try to hide it cause she likes his music.

Hmmm, there's a Cramps show on Dimeadozen now, Kid Congo's first with the band, and there's an audio clip that's provided.
I had never thought about it before, but it's just stricken me now that the guitat in Goo Goo Muck (1981) and Death Valley '69 bass line (1984) have something in common.
Well... Goo Goo Muck was not an original, let's name the author: Ronnie Cook.

Adele - He won't go / Sharon Van Etten - Magic chords

I don't believe SVE listens to Adele and Magic chords is a much better song, but there's the same rather uncommon chord progression (Cm / Gm / Fm).

Creedence Clearwater Revival's Green River = every Mudhoney song ever

The Soup Nazi 05.15.2016 07:35 PM

Tim Hardin's "Don't Make Promises" -> Spiritualized's "Take Your Time"

Drjohnrock 05.15.2016 07:55 PM

Every song by The Cars reminds me of Roxy Music's Editions Of You.

I FINALLY remembered the Dylan song that motherfucking Belle & Sebastian's "State I Am In" reminds me of. This has been bugging me forever. Haven't listened to Belle in an eternity, so I think I forgot what reminded me of what, but seriously... Check this shit out:

Bob Dylan - "I Want You" (YouTube)

Belle & Sebastian - "State I Am in" (YouTube)

Takes a minute for the resemblance to kick in on "State.." but it's a cold hard rip off, goddammit. Disguised by a whispy vocal intro and some altered pacing, but fuck... it's the same song!

The Soup Nazi 09.13.2016 06:34 PM

The drum intro to the Old 97's' "Four Leaf Clover" reminds me of the drum intro to The Smiths' "The Queen Is Dead".

Lucinda Williams' "Fruits Of My Labor" (from World Without Tears) reminds me a bit of the doo-wop classic "The Wind", originally by Nolan Strong & The Diablos and covered many times, most remarkably by The Jesters (included on The Paragons Meet The Jesters, "One of the greatest albums ever" —Lou Reed) and Laura Nyro & Labelle (Gonna Take A Miracle).

Lesson No. 2 (Glenn Branca) reminds me of Too Many Puppies (Primus)

The Soup Nazi 02.02.2017 04:40 PM

This one's for Bytor Peltor: Bratmobile's "Some Special" riff reminds me of R.E.M.'s "What's The Frequency, Kenneth?".
