I used to just use sharpies. One time I made a shirt that said "my gramma has lazer vishun" with a gramma with well, lazer vishun.

sharpies don't look that good after washing the shirt though plus i'm shit at drawing

Try Epson "Iron-On Cool Peel" transfer paper. It's the best I've used and it develops a really cool distressed look after about 20 washes.
