-This was played by a morning dj on armed forces radio in Panama in '69. The general heard it and fired him.

There should be dipswitches on the back of the door openers that allow you to change the code. Make them all the same.

At least, in my experience, that was the case.

floatingslowly 10.11.2012 11:27 AM

Oh no, they've gone the way of universal tv remotes??! For all the implied 'just push button to make them work' simplicity, I always seem to struggle setting them up.

At least if YOU can't get in, you know your stuff is secure!

How far away is it that you need to fly there?

Because if he can't figure it out, no one else can? hahaha how does that work? There's always someone out there with better skills, so I wouldn't give him a false sense of security. No offense to Bytor, obviously.

I would venture to guess if someone did want to get in and had a code-hopping hacked transmitter it would work, regardless. In fact, it would probably by waaay easier.

I still have my TV-B-Gone from back in the day for random televisions. Just press the button and it flys thru all the codes (at the time). Pretty sure hacked transmitters do something similar. I don't think its as easy to do anymore, but I wouldn't say its 100% secure, because he cant get it to work. Secure = mechanical lock, in this case.

AAUUGGHH - at least I got the one working.

Headed outside to cut the backyard and maybe get something useful accomplished today......and set up Halloween decorations : )

There should be a way to set it up w/o the other remotes tho, like in the case of not having one at all. Does it get the code from the opener unit itself? Or just the other remotes? I think you would have to do something more that what was stated in your post, because what would stop someone from standing outside and "searching out your code"? Good security sense would say you need to press something on the actual garage opener (the receiver) , or get it from an already properly programmed remote. Prob look at the first option... since the others are getting "bjorked" ;)

I reckon if someone wanted in, they could crowbar the motherfucker open.

I've had inoperable garage doors that wouldn't shut, wouldn't lock or just plain bashed themselves open and shut all day.

I should have been more clear, for you, dear objective reader. Nothing in this world is '100% secure'.

Werd. Sorry I am in tech-mode right now, ha. Fuckin' hackin all day. ;) Those transmitters were a hot item to hack years ago..

floatingslowly 10.11.2012 02:25 PM

There are a limited number of frequency ranges for any IR device. A broadbanded transmitter that 'tries' them all at once can 'crack the code'. As mentioned, it's still better than it was in the past, where everyone left their door to default settings, and a determined individual could drive up and down neighborhood streets, fishing for a lucky break with their own Kenmore opener.
