Just checking in to say i have nothing in particular to share hip hop related. I did watch the movie Hitman earlier which i forgot how much i really liked. And bumped some MC Tree yesterday..

Thanks for the recommendation to go see Lupe Fiasco!!!!

The University of Houston Student Program Board set up a Homecoming concert last Friday. It was slated to be Wale opening up fr Lupe Fiasco. My wife had been dealing with severe tooth pain and luckily the pain meds actually worked so we were able to go to the show.

Slim Thug stepped up and did a surprise 30 minute set of his H-Town classics! It was great. He got the crowd moving.

Then Wale came out and oh my god I do not know if it is because he is a bit caught upon himself because his tunes are all over the radio or what but the fool showed up so lit he was sloppy as fuck. he could not stay in meter or key and it was all around weak, but luckily he was at least entertaining in his stage patter. and he fell over at least 3 times. wasted., I think the H-town rappers that showed up to hang backstage hit him with that top shelf H-town smoke.

In the middle of Wale's set, (I think because they could see he was ruining it) Bun B jumped on stage and did a couple of tunes which was bad-ass.

Then Lupe got onstage, and right off he says "9 minutes straight people. 9 minutes" and proceeds to spit a super long track which was fucking hype and awesome and dense and the beat was so hard and it was EVERYTHING. I remembered the name (MURAL!) It was fucking great and his whole set was awesome. He performed for over 80 minutes and the crowd got nuts

Best Homecoming Concert ever!

Severian 11.10.2015 12:32 PM

I called Mural as one of the year's best tracks back in February. Yeah, it has a couple weak lyrical moments but the best is sick and it's the high point of Tetsuo & Youth.

Not surprised Wale sucked. Wale sucks. Wale is very much hung up on himself and I don't even think his songs are actually all over the radio at the moment.
He's a stooge.

Glad you had fun though. Lupe has had an excellent year.

New Gibbs is dope.

Severian 11.13.2015 09:55 AM

Aw it's out? I was just about to brag about having the Tribe reissue already, but now I gotta move my ass and grab the new Gibbs. Fuck. Thanks for stealing my thread resuscitation attempt louder!

Really doe. This thread needs to be resuscitated. I feel like all I do is work and sleep, and it's because I'm not whiling away my days gabbing about new joints with you bastards 24/7. Let's waste some time, friends. Life's too short to put 40 hours into consistent working every week. I need this, hear me?!

New Pusha T album on its way, btw.

Severian 11.13.2015 10:01 AM

Nope, Gibbs isn't out until the 20th, and I no longer have access to an endless supply of promos and early releases since we left the city in Sept.

So how do you have it, Mr. Loud? ;)

I may just have to ... Oh, look, I have it now too. How... fortuitous. I'll let you know what I think, though I'm sure we'll be in agreement.

(Ps: don't judge me... I ordered the album, so no rappers are gonna go hungry because of me. I'm just giving myself some ish to listen to while I wait for the 20th to slog around)

Severian 11.13.2015 04:03 PM

Yeah, Shadow of a Doubt is dope.

Rob Instigator 11.13.2015 05:13 PM

H-Town is all up on Travis Scott. any of ya fools dig him?

anything can happen at the night show

Rob Instigator 11.13.2015 05:16 PM

Slim Thug's latest one, Chuuch, sure sounded nuts when we first heard it on the local hip hop station. Osteen samples and all.

Gotta get dem blessins'

Have you heard Houston comedian Chingo Bling's "remix" of Hotline Bling?

I think you have some catching up to do if you're wondering about how the café feels about Travi$ Scott.

In 2014, louder and I both praised Days Before Radio quite a bit. Maybe NR too... Hard to keep track.

Then when his proper debut came out louder was like "nah man" and I was like "it's good!" And pepper green was like "Severian you dumb. That's the worst thing ever."

Then pitchfork reviewed it and did some damage to Travi$'s image among the, y'know... elite hipster snob crowd. In other words, white folks who think they're smart now think he's just the personification of imitation. It wasn't a fair review. Probably written by a toddler.

I still maintain that "Piss on Your Grave" and "Pornography" are top notch hip hop tracks though they definitely reflect how much of a Kanye follower Scott is (though some say Travi$ Scott is helping shape Kanye's sound these days, even though Scott apparently has no sound of his own and is just a walking amalgam of Kanye, Pusha and Future sounds... Yeah, it's gotten a little retarded)

My love for the Rodeo album has cooled. I think it's better than average with a few great moments. Days Before Radio was more singular. It could go either way at this point, but the bottom line is he has his fans and he has his haters.

Not sure where louder & NR stand on him at this point.

yes, he's cool if your drunk and snorting cocaine. it's 2015 kiddie drug hip hop and you're a ass grown man. there's Kayne doing his squeaky ass bitch panic attack voice(who's the voice of abstinence in all this) and a couple of cool samples!!! taylor swift is cool. check her new album out. she's talented too.

brazen. it'll blow your mind but, wont give you chill bumps because you're old and not shallow and ADD enough like your unborn children. thank god!!.... cause your children will have to be hooked on X and hydrocodone to enjoy this shit, unless your college smart coke feins. if they aren't rich feins, then they're white trash low class unknowingly supporting conservative domination of eliminating the ugly classes by retarded corporate hip hop music. supported by the education school systems and record companies.

I don't trust it and neither should you but, being cool is everything. enjoy that Travis Scoot.

Being cool is nothing. Absolutely nothing. I really hope you don't get that kind of vibe from me. That I somehow value coolness over.. Anything.

Pinata is better in pretty much every way, but it's still a cool album. He tried to go for a more modern sound.. there are a few Future-influenced autotune crooning tracks which aren't really what Gibbs excels at. Hopefully he goes back to focus on what he does best on his next album.

louder 11.15.2015 11:41 PM

Still feel the same about Rodeo. It's an overproduced mess and Travis is a mediocre rapper at best with some of the dumbest lyrics I've heard. "3500" is a good song and so are a couple others but I don't care for that album.

louder 11.15.2015 11:45 PM

Somehow I'm hooked on Mos Def again. One of the best rappers of all time. The Ecstatic is amazing, I've been waiting for a new project from him eagerly.

Seriously, what's up with Mos, Q-Tip, DOOM, Andre.. this decade? They need to come back from hiding and remind everyone why they're considered such legends.

Severian 11.16.2015 11:29 AM

Mos Def is excellent, and his classics will never die. Nor will Black Star, which is still arguably one of the best hip hop albums of all time.

I heard Mos was working on something new this year...

And Doom just dropped Bad Neighborhood with Med and Blu. That's something.

Rob Instigator 11.16.2015 12:10 PM

Q-Tip looked foolish in his weird clothes on Fallon on Friday when Tribe reunited. I wish that they did not have to do a track of Peoples Instinctive (25th anniversary and all I know). Phife really did not do shit on that LP.

was nice to see Jarobi though

It's a great album though... I mean, really.
I've always thought it was an underrated record, and while I hope there will be a more long term reunion project in the future (a touring reunion at least) I'm still really happy with the reissue.

Rob Instigator 11.16.2015 02:42 PM

great album, but not much from Phife on it. he was not a full member of Tribe when People's Instinctive came out.

louder 11.17.2015 01:45 AM

I'm not sure if I've ever mentioned how much I love Donuts here.. well, probably because I didn't back then. But it's grown to be one of my absolute fave hip-hop albums.
