But DS9 had a whole bevy of great characters, all with their distinct qualities. Hell, Garak - the mysterious, deeply conflicted outsider with skeletons in the closet; Kira, the initially distrustful "Number 1" who kicks major ass and turns out to be a deeply caring person; Odo, the stern and aloof arbiter of 'order' that is just as conflicted and 'human' as all the others, but is trapped in a prison of his own mind and circumstances. Hell, even Rom, the loveable "second fiddle" to Quark, who actually comes into his own by breaking with tradition and becoming an unlikely role model for workers unions (not to mention: one of the more wholesome depictions of fatherhood in Trek, next to the Siskos and O'Broen of course). Didn't care much for creeper Bashir initially, but he comes into his own as the series progresses as well. And damn, DS9 was great at getting emotional resonance out of unlikely pairings (Odo relating to Garak, because they both long for a sense of "home" that is far from ideal for instance). The show took the "caring for a ragtag team of outsiders" trope and elevated it into the stratosphere. Major respect there. |

Watch Ozark if you haven’t. Good overall. |
seen it. Ozark was very gripping, howing how rich white people can always win out against poor whites and johnny law.

I thought the last season was pretty meh but otherwise, good show yeah |
+orange is the new black - My wife digs it. I don't give a fuck about jail stories.
+russian doll. - have not seen it. +house of cards. - Seen it. Thought it was very well done, even the final season, which like all shows filmed in the past 2 years, suffered due to the lack of extras (COVID) which made it seem like a stage play and not the busy rush of the white house. +severian likes ozark,- OZARK is very very good, and more about money laundering than drug dealing. His wife is a horrible, horrible person. + queen's gambit - Saw it. Cool show. wish it had more about chess in it. +oh! the last kingdom - I enjoyed the shit out of Last Kingdom. when Beocha (sp?) died man?? rough..... I thought it was one of the most authentic in terms of showing how people actually lived and how small, comparatively, ancient armies used to be. +bojack! - I can't watch cartoons anymore. It has been about 15-20 years since I can sit through animated TV shows. +was "salt, fat, acid, heat" on netflix? - Saw it. nice show +the stand up comedy specials are great - Bill Burr's latest was fucking BORING. I miss when standup comedians would tell jokes, and not comment on the latest news bullshit. +glow - My wife watched it. I saw a few episodes. I cannot stand Marc marron but he was good in it. +was kimmy schmidt unbreakable - I don't watch shows about the troubles and problems of well-off white women. I could give a fuck. |

I rewatched a bunch of them, amazing how bad some episodes are. Some are good though, but I wish they would say in advance :p Anyway, my favourite series on Netflix is Happy, especially the first season. It's weird as hell, the second season becomes a bit too weird though. Also, The Mechanism I liked a lot, it's a Brazilian series about their fraudulent politicians. And you could give Undercover a try, it's a Dutch/Belgian crime series (based on true events). I only watched the first season, which was good. Haven't watch the remaining seasons yet. You probably will miss some of the subtleties, about differences between Dutch and Belgian cultures and people etc. Just read a few of the reviews on imdb, one says it's a trailer park version of Sopranos with the "everything goes wrong all the time" storytelling of Breaking Bad. Which sums it up very well, but I haven't seen Breaking Bad, nor the Sopranos actually |

and now i want to watch it all over again, i swear Quote:
hahaha goddamn, yeah, last kingdom was super addictive and charged with intense emotions. and yeah, people lived in sooo much filth back then hahaha. but bojack is more real than real. it's like a corrupted version of bob saget, who apparently was a very nice man, or so they said after he died. but i used to watch bojak thinking it was bob saget's alter ego. anyway, i understand if you don't like the visual style, but the stories and characters are 100% adult (adult, not porno). i... liked the chapelle and louis ck specials hahahahaha. i never expect comedians to be saints. either i laugh or i don't. and with them i do... |
BTW, Reservation Dogs is back on Hulu, season 2, tomorrow
|
Quote:
Give Bojack a chance. I didn’t think I’d like it either but goddamn man, what a genuinely great show. Genuinely great drama in addition to being a genuinely funny comedy and having genuinely good animation and shit. |
Quote:
I started watching Season 2 yesterday, it's much worse than the first season. In the 2nd season they gave the best characters the smallest roles, and replaced them with similar characters that aren't as good. So just watch season 1 if you're up for it. Perhaps Season 3 is better than 2, just skip 2. |
The Sandman on Netflix was very good. They did a great job of capturing the horror themes of the first 2 volumes on Sandman (first 10-14 issues).
The only beef I have is that there is about 5-10 minutes of typical UK melodrama soap opera type shit that was not in the comic. I cannot wait until season two because that is when Dream/Morpheus really starts fuckin with the Endless. |
Quote:
It’s been a minute since I read the comic but I think it’s probably still the best comic ever. Glad to hear you like the show, because I was nervous about it. Haven’t seen it yet tho |
The first 6 episodes of What We Do In The Shadows new season are so fucking funny
|
Quote:
I feel like it’s better than last season but still not quite as funny as the first couple seasons. Still, I’m totally here for this show, fuck yeah |
lately been offloading stress with a ridiculous british soap opera
basically everyone in it is a criminal, stupid, and a blabbermouth, which invariably invites an endless amount of meddling by others and great frustration of said blabbermouth. if they could only think things through and shut the fuck up about their plans, they'd be all happy and successful. but no! and so there's always some terrible ridiculousness happening in "walford" (made up name). the show is very bad and embarrassing, but funny too in an involuntary way and it makes you forget your problems. so a bit like gas station vodka hahahahahahahahaaaaaaaaa. it's only been a few weeks i'm watching this but i pray daily for the return of zoe slater. she used to be on this show like 20 years ago but was supposed to reappear like a week ago (it was lies though).,, ![]() i hope she hasn't turned into a plastic surgery atrocity like most of the middle-aged cast here. there are massive amounts of body fillers in zoe's mother-sister (that's right, lol). e.g. see: https://www.thesun.co.uk/tvandshowbi...slaters-boobs/ lfmao. |

![]() Hyper-capitalism commodifying a fragile sense of counter-culture. Corners being cut everywhere and no thought for anything else than a flimsy grand concept. Add to that the ramifications of a society still steeped in a deeply chauvinistic Zeitgeist and you got yourself a recipe for disaster. I'd heard and seen articles about the event. But this doc actually delved into it a bit deeper and showed footage as well as firsthand accounts that really provided a sense of the magnitude of awfulness going on there. Granted, probably not the best thing to watch if you want to combat your growing misanthropic notions. But a fascinating glimpse into the abyss of the human condition if cultivated by all the wrong spirits. I also started watching Star Trek Voyager now. And woof, did the writing take a dip after finishing DS9. I mean, it's not completely without its merits. Janeway is interesting and well-realized early on and one or two other characters have some potential, but it all feels so ... inconsequential. |
Quote:
i've never seen this, but you really are on a roll with these reviews. Quote:
the best thing about it is janeway's voice. but the other characters! my god... so awful. tom parris: fuckkkking boring. tuvok: boring. chakotay: boring. rob's cousin b'elanna: boring. ensing kim: pointless. the ridiculous catfish man: boring and annoying. his pointy eared girlfriend: cute, but boring. etc. kate mulgrew had the presence to have been a great captain but ayayay... i didn't have the patience to cross the whole of the delta quadrant with that lot. the hologram doctor was actually entertaining at times. please state the nature of your medical emergency. yup, that phrase is the most memorable thing about that show for me. PLEASE STATE THE NATURE OF YOUR MEDICAL EMERGENCY ok -- ps that show was so boring that i even forgot that 7 of 9 was in it. boring! ok but enterprise was perhaps even worse... on that subject, i've seen the first 2 seasons of discovery and it felt pretty great |
I fucking HATE ST:Voyager.
Inconsequential tripe. I have read a lot recently about how the writer's room for that show were all ivy league "writer" types, who were hired because they had no familiarity with Star Trek. The articles state that it was a real douchbag room. Voyager is so fucking stupid and dull. 7 years and that poor Ensign Kim never gets a promotion! Not even a field promotion! and the whole idea was to combine a Maquee (sp?) crew with a starfleet crew, and that went unexplored after the first few episodes. I hated that fucking idiot that was their "chef" god I hate it so much. Enterpirse would have been much better if they had not cast TV's resident sad-sack hounddog face mr. quantum leap himself as captain. he sucks. he is a melodramatic overactor, and ruined that show from the beginning. |
Quote:
as for enterprise, the one i couldn't stand was that twangy trip guy. twang twang twang twang twang. the british weapons guy was also boring and sad. the languages lady i barely remember. the hot vulcan was so hot, but then what else was she? no idea. oh, again with doctors saving the day, dr phlox was probably the more interesting and entertaining character and well played by that guy i don't know his name. but yeah if you want to trash cap'n basset hound i won't fight for him lol. |
An odd mix of old PBS "Ghostwriter" from my childhood, and then also so far season 1 of The Young Ones from the UK.
|
We got Ghostwriter in the uk too :). I've watched bits on youtube.
Currently onto series 4 of Breaking Bad. I feel like it's been spoiled a bit by watching Better Call Saul finale first though. |
I started watching Resident Alien.
some bits are too stupid, some bits are too much soap, but some bits are very funny, so I'll continue watching it. Halfway though season one now I am, of two seasons. It comes from the SciFi channel, but It's in the collection of my cable provider, who once had ties with HBO but no more now that they became an independent streamer over here. |
Love Death & Robots S3 - Always a great binge. A few fun shorts and one absolute winner. My favorites this season were Bad Traveling, Kill Team Kill & Jibaro.

1. it stars Linda Hamilton as a general of some secret organization! ![]() 2. it uses a fragment of The Breeders' No Aloha in an amazing way, I believe it's in episode 9, not sure anymore. Won't give details how or when, but it's something to do with Freezeheads :D Apparently some of the creators is a big Breeders fan, according to this reddit post one of the characters often wears a Last Splash shirt. Hadn't noticed it or perhaps this is only during season 2. Overall, it's a very enjoyable series, especially for one that comes from the scyfy channel. Some bits are hilarious. Will probably start with season 2 tonight. Right now I'm watching Davis Cup tennis, The Dutchies will beat the US :D, just like they did with the UK last night. edit: I thought Resident Alien was old, but season 2 is still running, according to imdb the 14th and last episode of season 2 will air this week. For now I can only watch up to episode 8, I hope they will add the remaining episodes too ... |
oooooh helll yesssss david cronenberg is in star trek discovery hahahhaha i am just catching up yesssssss
cronenberg and michelle yeoh in the same scene i am not worthy lololol -- later: so... binged through season 3 of discovery, now watching season 4 and i still like it, but i have just one general complaint about it: too many fucking fee-fees and emotional speeches. i mean, i get it, it's for millennials and gen z kids, they're more touchy feely or something, but god damn, all the emoting gets tedious for me. i'm gonna have to start fast-forwarding through the speeches. maybe i'm part terran hahahahahaa. -- also, so much fucking whispering, ffs. season 4 might be the one that sinks this ship for me |
i was trying to watch bloomberg news but they have the queen of england's funeral on instead. nice looking gothic church though, and a few good tunes. the priest said some lies about god granting stuff and the epstein accomplice was in front row. his brother looked on the verge of tears when they sang that long live him. good spectacle though, i swear.
but cmon already i need to hear what's up with the money world... get back to the financial markets & the economy & so on. queen or not, we all have to eat... |
Atlanta, the final season, just started so I’m on that. Watched one of two episodes.
The Bear, on Hulu, is pretty good. With the dude from Shameless — kid who played ‘Lip. Sandman a little bit. It’s fine I guess? I dunno. I don’t think it’s great but it’s fine. The Resort on Peacock. Pretty damn good so far. |
Reservation Dogs been hilarious, showing white people fucking catfish
|

really looking forward to catch up with that. plus a new season of the handmaid's tale, it should justify a month's worth of hulu... plus that bear that severian mentions (no spoilers! lol). been a while since i last saw hulu (or netflix, for that matter). -- meanwhile, fuck of all fucks, start trek discovery season 4 is now showing therapy sessions. it's one big fucking therapy session. just talk talk talk about fee-fees, as if the objective world did not exist. bunch of fucking navel gazers. fuck. it's all about me me me me me me me me. I WANT THE BORG TO SHOW UP AND EAT EVERYONE IN STAR TREK DISCOVERY it's really fucking awful now. with michelle yeoh gone and burnham altered beyond recognition there is nobody left to like. ok david cronenberg is there to deliver a few lines but his character is not great. who the fuck wrote this shit?? what were they thinking?? awful. awful. the worst nosedive in the history of star trek. worse than fucking voyager. please burn in flames. -- eta: an accomplice sent me a meme... ![]() - now even the computer has fee-fees, ffs. waiting for it to have a meltdown like all the other fucks. ... indeed it did and now it's getting therapy too in the middle of an emergency. BORG PLEASE KILL EVERYONE. i am not rooting for this whispering crew... and their panic attack computer  - s4e6: the computer is singing a corny song ***I QUIT*** |
I used my VPN to good effect and got Star Trek Lower Decks.
It is funny, and hectic, and kinetic, and I cannot watch it. I am an old fart and hyperkinetic cartoons bore me shitless. |
im having a lot of fun watching "the serpent queen", which is a fictionalized version of catherine de medici's life.
samantha morton is great in it. i mean she's always been a great actor, and here she blows them all out of the water. a highly entertaining performance, and the story is ok too. with some clever plot devices, but her performance really is the key to all here. ![]() an evil you can root for, haahaahaaa here is an article about it from a tabloid i despise: https://nypost.com/2022/09/12/samant...e-mob-fleabag/ |
Handmaid’s Tale has gone on FAR TOO LONG and lost all meaning, goddammit. It was such a good show for like 2 seasons. Now it’s just regurgitated plot points, wasted time, manufactured tension and missed opportunities topped with HORRENDOUS music cues. What the fuck
|
Quote:
i was looking forward to it and getting ready for a month or two of hulu. thanks for the heads up. |
after the hulu warning got a month of netflix. it's been years.
so far i've sampled: sandman: good fun, binged all this weekend. barbarians (german): very good, will continue later queens gambit: good, a bit depressing, have it on now for lunch derry girls: hilarious, needs full attention, will watch more persuasion: a funny fresh take on an old stuffy novel, needs full attention, will save for movie night the witcher: rewatching from the start because i had forgotten. slower than i remembered, ok to have on while doing paperwork i guess. russian doll s.2: okay? needs attention, will catch up later |

I know you like the graphic novels, so I’m glad you like the show. Personally I thought it could have been better, but it wasn’t bad by any means. Just a little something missing. Can’t quite put my finger on it. |
Quote:
if something was a problem for me was that the comics morpheus was spookier looking and more haggard, whereas the main actor here was too babyfaced for the part, sometimes to comical effect, but that's teevee lol. |
My only beef with the sanndman TV show is that the surreal nature of the comics is not doable, even with the massive CGI and green screen work.
Also, the guy playing Sandman should at least be filmed so he appears 7 feet tall. In the comics, the Endless' appearance changed depending on who they interacted with. For example, white people saw a white Morpheus, Africans saw an African Morpheus. Cats see a cat morpheus., etc. They could have done so much with that in the show, but you cannot confuse the ignorant racists I guess. |
haha yeah there are limits to the medium and the audience/demographics and what tv can take.
they did that changing appearance briefly in hell with nada and in the cat animation. otherwise yeah it was just the pouty baby lmao. |
They tried to use a weird elongated lens to recreate the look of Sam Keith’s art, but it didn’t quite work. Also, Keith didn’t draw all the stories the show touched on (I don’t think), but I do think the comic is pretty close to unfilmable. Still, they did OK, considering.
Didn’t watch the tacked-on cat episode. Love that comic story but the adaptation was not doing it for me |
