i agree with some of your points, but the tone is a little harsh..
as in any art form, with music one needs to learn first.. for writers, the first prerequisite is to read, being literate does not make you a writer.. same thing applies for music.. it helps if you can play an instrument - punk DIY ethos helps here - but when you hear a piece of astounding music, you learn much more than what books on music can offer you..

(note: I call this an unpopular music opinion, though i don't watch the show for the "musical" value of it, i.e. the actual songs that are being sung, but merely the talent of each contestant. so maybe that viewpoint is not quite as unpopular, though i'm sure even that is)

My band has sounded WAY better since we all learned scales, it broadens our sound so much. However, some people are limited by the spectrum of music they are familiar with, even if they are great musicians
