i always thought smarminess was being nice in an overbearing, insincere way. Which is far from being the best thing ever.

Main Entry: smarmy
Pronunciation: \ˈsmär-mē\ Function: adjective Inflected Form(s): smarm·i·er; smarm·i·est Etymology: smarm to gush, slobber Date: 1924 1 : revealing or marked by a smug, ingratiating, or false earnestness <a tone of smarmy self-satisfaction — New Yorker> 2 : of low sleazy taste or quality <smarmy eroticism> |
It just means being smug and sleazy...
|
Ah, we posted that at the same time.

Well, perhaps I used the wrong word then. In my mind 'smarmy' was devoid of cleverness and snottiness. Like, not crass at all, moreso just obnoxiously smug. Maybe thinking one is being snotty, but not actually? How do I describe it...
You know that awful-named band Does It Offend You, Yeah? Well imagine some smug British jackass in a tweed blazer with a mop-top thinking he's being clever and actually asking 'Does It Offend You, Yeah?' I want to cave that man's face in. |
the name is the best part of does it offend you, yeah? i reckon that speaks volumes about the music of does it offend you, yeah?
yeah? yeah? YEAH? |
Well, I used to think that You Me At Six was one of the wost band names ever, but I think those guys might've topped it.
I think if a band is defunct, then their name should be fair game. I'm sick of seeing twats trying to be clever because pretty much all the best band names have been taken... |
anal cunt still have the greatest name ever

Nickelback are a quality rockband, the likes of which we need more of.
|
^Oh god, NO!!!
|
What, you don't appreciate the heartfelt wailing of Chad Kroeger? The emotional instrumental heartporu that is his backing band?
Nickelback are a titan, a titan that represents everything rock could and should be. |
note that due to the wording of the title, it is possible to post unpopular opinions that you don't agree with
eg green day are hardcore, kraftwerk are shite |

I like Tori Amos's Little earthquakes and Under the pink (the latter in particular).
|
Dirty and NYC Ghosts & Flowers are the two best SY albums.

Is that unpopular? I always thought she was pretty cool. At least one good song on every album she's put out (except maybe the more recent ones). |
The United States have produced far more amazing New Country songs in the last 5 years than they have anything in the 'alt.' vein, including noise.
Also, bump. Also: threads where people talk about how shit some things are are better than threads where people talk about how great some things are. |
the precieved unpopularity of your (shit) opinion is highly geographically based. from where I'm sitting, you would get a round of hi-5's, several "hook-em horns" and a 6-pack of Budweiser (shit) beer.
I would get blank stares for extolling goth music and quite possibly a few forked-fingers/evil-eyes. I shudder what "they" will think about my voodoo tattoo. and by "they", I mean the people that would agree with your (shit) opinion. c'mon over pardner, I'll buya a beeeer. |
A popular, and correct, musical opinion would be that, regardless of the merits of some goth music, goths, the world over, are rightly reviled.
|
70% of current improv music I listen to doesn't stick. And it's not my fault for sure.
