It definitely benefits from a big screen but it's essentially a very human film and, if anything, that side comes across better on a small screen. Of course, visually, however you're watching it, it's absolutely beautiful.

Honestly, put whatever reservations you might have to one side and give it a go.

SOLD!

thanks.

ps- netflix predicts only 3 out of 5 stars from me but i'll give it a shot anyway.

It would've probably said the same for me. On the surface it's not the kind of film I'd usually go for but on reflection it's actually hard to say what kind of film it is. Certainly it's the only sci-fi film I can remember that's made me cry.

have you seen silent running?

eta- and the end of "the wrath of kahn"? (the original, not the latest atrocity)

I remember liking Silent Running but not much else about it, same with Wrath of Kahn. I cry at unusual things in films, usually more out of happiness or because of the sheer brilliance of something than through any kind of sadness, or in the case of Gravity feeling overwhelmed by the intensity of it all.

EDIT: Christ I've really overhyped that now. Don't expect the greatest film you'll ever see, it isn't, but as an out of the blue little Hollywood gem, brilliantly written, amazingly shot (to put it mildly), and very well acted, you might be pleasantly surprised.

new Jim Jarmusch vampire movie, Only Lovers Left Alive, fantastic! great visuals and a really good soundtrack(Jozef Van Wissem)The one vamp is an experimental guitarist, which is actually a little forced, but Tilda Swinton is really great as the more literary vamp. They are culture vultures and the wall of their old friends thru the years shows, among others, Kafka, Theolonious Monk, Samuel Beckett, Wm Burroughs and Rodney Dangerfield. A lot of humor in it, too

My sister has been trying to make me watch this movie for fucking years now, and the more she explains it to me, the less I want to watch it every time. Shit, if she just said I got a Christian Bale movie with David Bowie in it and never even let me read the description I probably would have given it a starting chance.

I was exactly the same. A friend lent me the DVD and kept telling me just to ignore what it's about and give it a go. But it took me ages to get around to it cos I was just never in the mood for a film about magicians. And it is very good.

I thought the dialogue was awful in Gravity, and the characters were completely the most run of the mill hollywood BS you could imagine.

demonrail666 05.26.2014 06:14 AM

The dialogue was simple and a bit pulpy, same with the characters, but I thought they were pitched perfectly for the film. I absolutely love it but I've spoken to a few people who share your view. It may be a bit of a marmite movie.
