I never watch American Pickers anymore, it's really lame, especially since whenever they decided to split up and team up with all kind of other people who are even more annoying. But while channel hopping the other day, I stumbled upon an episode that was actually very interesting. They visited the Warren brothers, Gene and Christopher, who are the third generation of their family business. And their family business is to supply mock-up models and special effects (especially stop-motion) for Hollywood movies. Check their imdb resume's on the links supplied, and then also their dad's and their grandfather's, who both are named Gene as well. Both the dad and the granddad won an Oscar, the brothers hope they some day will win one as well. That would make them only the second family that achieved three generations of Oscar winners, next to the Hustons.
It's episode 3 of season 23. This link might work for you, and let you watch it online (not for me, I'm being redirected to the Dutch site)

oh and last night I watched an episode of Private Eyes, starring Jason Priestley. Yes, the Jason Priestley of Beverly Hills 90210. He's still working apparently. But as expected, this series is very lame and I will not watch any more, even though the next episode did have William Shatner as a guest appearance. This series does have very high ratings on imdb, but it just has the lamest stories, and the acting sucks as well.

janice soprano is back!

fucking janice! hahahahaaaaa

Rob Instigator 06.14.2023 09:56 AM

Janice is evil supreme, just as bad as her mom. Only gets wors and worse.

Succession was very good, onc eyou get into season 3, and the big picture of it becomes clearer. It is about the issues that arise when an achiever is finished, and all their achievements pass on to children who did nothing to earn it, nor did they prepare properly to take over.

It is essentially about Rupert Murdoch and his family. he has said as much.

hahahahahaha, yeah, janice is the worst, total garbage human, but at this point (3rd rewarch of entire series i think) she's become a source of laughs for me. almost a cartoon. she never fails to deliver ridiculousness. can always be counted to be the most narcissistic, petty, incompetent grifter of the lot.

i liked what she did to richie aprile though hahahahaaaa. rock-paper-scissors. otoh, later down the road, poor baccalà...

yeah this is why i called ramy's mom (same actress plays marcia here) "wendi deng," hahaha (murdoch's chinese spy wife, who banged tony blair while married to murdoch).

anyway yes, the old man is a fucking maniac but is competent, while the little turds he himself damaged can't function right. garbage people all around. i assume the viking is even more psycho than the old man.

Staying consistent with my Trek-phase, having advanced to Enterprise now. You know, as much as I complained about Voyager, and there sure is a LOT to complain about, it at least wasn't as dull and lifeless as Enterprise S1. The first few eps seemed like a few hicks talking back to Vulcans, set to dull grey backgrounds and badly dated early 2000s writing. Riveting.

It's slowly starting to get somewhat better with the beginning of S2 now, but oof. It sure took a long time until there was even a hint of some distinguishable characterization in the series' protagonists. And a lot has been said about the opening theme. I'd say it sounds like a blend between a song written for a religious cult and a 90s beer commercial. A few friends sitting on a boat somewhere at a lake, a few shots of exaggerated companionship and cooperation color-corrected to hint at the scorching heat. Then, someone opens the cooler and withdraws a few mass-produced, watered-down bottles of -insert product name here- and there we go: "Cause I got FAITH of the HEAAAA-AAAAART..."

I've been watching Avatar the Last Airbender bender for the first time, and I really like it so far! I know I would be a waterbender for sure!

I also watched Girl in the Basement last night, and the movie is so twisted but really good. If you really like horror/really really fucked up shit, then watch it I guess. Just a content warning for abuse and S/A

!@#$%! 06.17.2023 08:07 AM

refinished season 3 of sopranos. a quieter end than the first two seasons. but meadow's progressive "loss of innocence," which was pointed out by tony in an earlier episode, really reaches a new peak here.

jackie jr really was a fucking moron though hahahahaha.

-

carmela also has had an interesting moral arc. i really liked that old psychiatrist who won't take her blood money.

!@#$%! 06.17.2023 04:46 PM

resumed s2e8 of succession but changed my perspective from drama to comedy and it's much better

the dweeb looks dweebier! his cringeworthy performance lmao.

now all the shit is in the right place.

veep!

Toilet & Bowels 06.20.2023 05:32 AM

With Succession you can watch S2, 3 and 4 episodes in any order you want or skip them all entirely, it makes to difference as there's no real plot or character development. I thought S5 was great.

Nope

!@#$%! 06.24.2023 09:50 AM

refinished sopranos season 4. i don't feel it was as good as the earlier ones. 1&2 were great, 2 in particular. i can't say anything "bad" about 3&4, and i like some of the new characters introduced, it's just that the others were better.

i think the conflict with the mother was better than the conflict with anybody else really hahahhaha. this time i was able to detect the episode where they inserted nancy marchand post-mortem with the cut-up footage and cgi and whatever and i knew why. it didn't bother me, but it was clear they were patching up a hole in the fabric.

i don't know what plans the writers had for livia before nancy marchand died, and maybe i'll go dig up some info, but it does feel like a big loss to the narrative with her character gone. it would have been fantastic if she had kept torturing him throughout hahahaha. i mean she had those tickets after all and was getting ready to testify against him. and then? and afterwards? wow.

janice returning to live in that house is a replacement in a way, but her character is too fucking funny to have the same mindfucking effect as livia's pit of darkness and hate.

Severian 06.26.2023 06:26 AM

The Bear. Season 2 is already out, which blows my mind. Feels like the first season just happened. Anyway, good show. Might benefit from being 45 min-1 hour instead of a half-hour; feels quite claustrophobic, but I’m sure that’s intentional.

Someone on twitter called the main guy (Lip from Shameless) the “poor man’s Kendall Roy” and I thought that was fucking hilarious and accurate

!@#$%! 06.26.2023 09:38 PM

i got tired of the sopranos at the start of season 5. not that it's bad, and animal blundetto is a great character, but it's almost richie aprile all over again except now it's massage instead of yoga. and anyway, i feel too sorry for poor dumbfuck adriana to keep watchign what happens to her.

the competition for carmine's succession (succession!) is/will be good, especially with little carmine's hilarious malapropisms, but i already know that story. plus, i fucking hate phil leotardo. i would happily fast forward to his skull getting crushed.

so anyway i went looking for something else on hbo or max or whatever the fuck they call it now, before the month expires, and saw about 45 minutes of "the last of us".

which is... the walking dead! again! still walking! same old shit regurgitated daily! tv writers please go eat shit. the last of the walking fucking dead. so tiresome.

july maybe i'll get netflix so i can finish saul. not much more to see in that channel i expect, we get the same spent old tropes everywhere. the witcher is gonna have the final season but i got tired of it way before cavill did.

okay! move along! nothing to see here!

Rob Instigator 06.28.2023 10:28 AM

finished season 5 of True Blood.

I have enjoyed the fast pace, constant surprises, and twists.

I bought something from Amazon and got a free month of Prime Video. Any recommendations?
I just started watching The Boys, so I'll need to finish those three seasons until I get to watch something else ... looks like a fun series, but I'm only halfway episode 1.

looking at some lists online here some prime originals or distributions i've liked

mrs. maisel
vox machina
man in the high castle (slowww sometimes)
jack ryan
clarksons farm (stupid but entertsining)
good omens
homecoming
goliath
alpha house
red oaks
mozart in the jungle
jean-claude van johnson
the giant beast that is the global economy
all or nothing (various teams)
britannia
the peripheral
the legend of el cid
porno y helado
argentina 1985 (film)
lord of the rings series

there's other stuff but this was a quick scan of their original programs or coproductions etc

_tunic_ 07.03.2023 01:41 PM

cool thanks! I'm considering to cancel my Netflix for now, it's a lot more expensive than Prime anyway, and I can't watch both at the same time ;-)

Will definitely try out jean-claude van johnson, it reminds me of that movie JCVD where he also more or less plays himself and gets involved in a bank heist.
And that Lord Of The Rings series too. The only one I'll or sure not watch is Clarksons Farm. Even though it may be interesting and entertaining, I've seen so many Top Gear episoedes that I don't fancy watching anything with or by him any longer.

But first I'll finish The Boys, I'm liking it. Except that the character I liked most was killed in the last episode of season 1 (the bitchy boss woman that looks a hell of a lot like the HR boss in my previous company) :-)

Antagon 07.03.2023 02:55 PM

Recently rewatched all of the Futurama Seasons up to now. Apart from a few exceptions, those earlier Seasons have only gotten better over time. And damn, it must have some of the funniest line-deliveries in animation history. I found myself laughing frequently at some of the most casual asides, because the comedic talent behind the voice acting is just so damn good. And then there are the tearjerkers, oh boy the tearjerkers. If it meant to be moving, it was MOVING, goddamnit. Also, watching this inbetween my Star Trek: Enterprise sessions: Oddly enough, Futurama is a much better Star Trek series than Enterprise.

Cautiously looking forward to the new Season due to drop soon. Some of the concise writing unfortunately fizzled out during the reunion run in the early 2010s, but there were still a few standout episodes here and there. Hope they can re-capture some of that initial spark - though some things obviously need to change, given that the late 90s and early 2000s were much different times. Fingers crossed.

he's annoying, i tire of him, but it is great to see him fail and fail, and he's got a hobbit he employs who insults him constantly. very funny!

i really mean it when i say hobbit. the cotswolds is the region that inspired tolkien for the shire. and the employee really looks like a hobbit. i could almost bet he's got hairy feet hahahahaaaa

but yeah i understand clarkson fatigue for sure.

-

i always have prime video because i use amazon for shopping and it's included in the price. plus here you can add/remove other channels. netflix is the one i turn on and off. i just turned it on actually, to watch better call saul.

-

eta: spent the 4th of july holiday watching the last season of better call saul. it was great!

_tunic_ 07.17.2023 09:22 AM

I finished the 3 seasons of The Boys. Loved every (well most) minute of it!
Also: Wimbledon. One of my favourite sports tournaments. And the men's final was great this year, so were most other matches I watched.
I wanted to watch Tour De France this afternoon, but they are resting. What a bunch of sloths :D
I get bored very soon from watching cycling (and especially the commentators, bladibladibladibla for hours and hours about totally nothing). But I thought it's the relay today, but that's then for tomorrow...

Severian 07.18.2023 05:39 AM

The Boys is insane. Might be more insane than the comic. I hear Season 4 is going to be total fucking madness, as if people running into urethras and then exploding, or performing complex tasks with Python-length penises, wasn’t mad enough.

Rob Instigator 07.18.2023 10:26 AM

Watching new season of WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS and it is back to its hilarity and fun!!!!

Watching new season of ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA and it is once again hilarious.

Watching second season of BRITTANIA. That show is BUCKWILD, insane, visceral, and super fun.

watched the first 2 episodes of I AM VIRGO. super fun, clever, and very unexpected.

catching up with netflix:

how to sell drugs on the internet (fast) - breaking bad redone as a german teen comedy. very funny. the main character is often fucking insufferable hahahhaa he looks like an 83 year old lady. anyway, 3 seasons, very good.

chapelle's various netflix specials. just watched the mark twain one. dc!! i personally know several people in the audience, which was a nice surprise.

pretend it's a city - fran leibowitz chats with scorsese, who laughs waaaaaay too much, like this: "haaaaaaaaaaaaa haaaaaaaaaa haaaaaaaaaaaa haaaaaaa" (incessantly). okay martin, calm your tits. fran leibowitz is great, but she's not a comedian like that. i smiled and chuckled at her observations (a lot), but her material is not the stuff of belly laughs, for me. it's clever though, and she's interesting and very entertaining. i'd definitely rewatch.

Rob Instigator 07.20.2023 08:28 AM

scorcese on drugs in that one I think

that degenerate bitch is nuts, but she's entertaining hahaha. i ended up watching all of it. can't remember much of it now, it's not like it was a gripping story with amazing characters, it's more like caligula-style buffoonery than anything else. good trash, so to speak.

i've been waiting for good omens 2 but they only had a trailer last time i checked. 1 was great. is it all up now?

-

anyway saw some netflix shows, "losing" seems interesting so far, no, i misremembered. LOSERS. good stuff! real documentary short and to the point and great subjects. i love the graphics too.

really really good! i'd recommend it to all.

currently wondering if i should renew netflix. it looks like they have enough of what interests me for a 2nd month... if not, it's only a small bet.

Antagon 07.31.2023 08:15 PM

Started watching the new Futurama season. A bit rough around the edges in the story progression department, but certainly not lacking heart and inspiration - a fear I had after the very middling seasons some 10 years ago. They're back on track with good character-driven material rather than merely gimmick or fad-based storytelling as was often the case with their previous Comedy Central run. Sure, the first episode does both tackle the phenomenon of binge-watching and provides meta-commentary about the industry that's very on the nose. But what can I say, the writing is actually pretty funny and sharp. This season has potential. Looking forward to the rest of it.

Severian 08.01.2023 06:05 AM

House of the Dragon.

Took me 10 years to watch all of Game of Thrones, so even though I’ve read the book this show’s based on, I wasn’t super keen on it. But it’s OK.

No clue why they canceled that after only 2 seasons or whatever.
Then The Boys comes out and is a huge success. Wonder if Prime is reconsidering that.
