after nearly 2 weeks plonked in front of the motherfucking lifesucking computer i'm doing farm work again. woohoooo!!

yes, there is some pain attached, and minor injuries, but the endorphins are awesome, and the dopamines of a job done too, and when the end of the day comes i have my beer and it's not a fattening beverage but liquid gold.

schizophrenicroom 03.03.2015 02:09 PM

the endorphins are the best part. i just slaughtered a work out and i'm sore, but fuck man, it feels awesome.

that great! i hope you can get the health system to give you the patch for free maybe. that would be double goodness.

Antagon 03.03.2015 04:49 PM

I'll be spinning again in May. Still on the lookout for films to show as a backdrop. "The Phantom Carriage" and "Night And The City" are hot contenders right now. Nosferatu is always an option but I'm afraid, it's become sort of a cliché.

the other day i was at what was nearly a sex party (it wasn't, but almost felt like it, which was great-- edges are nice) and they had fellini's "satiricon" on a wall-- not sure it was the dj's choice but it looked great.

are you looking for black & white or color? and what is your mood of choice? i am working on becoming a movie encyclopaedia (not there yet) so maybe i can make some suggestions.

schizophrenicroom 03.03.2015 06:20 PM

cashier/serving/front of house. right off campus so it'll be mad busy.

Well, it wasn't a concrete concept from the get-go but I usually showed films inspired by German Expressionism first and then a random choice for the second one. It's sort of a Goth-event, not completely though (I play a blend of Post-Punk, Goth-Rock, Art Rock, 90s Angst, Synthpop, Shoegaze and some Soul and Blues). I've discovered that 1920s German Expressionist cinema goes incredibly well with my musical choices but it's not exclusive. Anything that is horror-inspired (but not exactly what one would call horror by today's standards), features surreal imagery, a playfully macabre production design or nice chiaroscuro lighting is fair game. Could even be a more modern film, as long as it fits the bill. I just tend to gravitate towards black and white films with a fascinatingly antiquated but creative look to them. Bonus points for subtitles (Another reason, why German Expressionist films were a prefered choice of mine during the first two gigs).

My former choices:

First gig:
1) Das Cabinet Des Dr. Caligari
2) Castaway On The Moon

Second gig:
1) The Man Who Laughs
2) The Seventh Seal

Appreciate your help by the way!

!@#$%! 03.03.2015 07:47 PM

i love german expressionism-- from "m" to "metropolis". but for a straight-up goth atmosphere i think you need the fantastic angle-- murnaus "faust" maybe?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cbtTMEtxty4

i don't know what you mean by subtitles as many of these were silent movies and used title cards, plus you're in austria and speak german. so you prefer german-language films? or are you showing some kind of subtitles?

if you wanted to go with modern (and funny), mel brooks "young frankenstein" would provide the visuals you want but subvert all the seriousness.

http://i.imgur.com/oFVcgJV.png

unrelated to the horror genre i have always liked fritz lang's "spies" for its abstract imagery.

oh, dr. mabuse the gambler is more of a "gangster" movie but with some visuals that prelude busby berkeley (some cabaret scenes)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MulihI2Mx80

the testament of dr. mabuse is great too though it happens in a mental hospital

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pu-G5_Jo-LQ -- not really great visuals all indoors

dr. mabuse became a sort of recurrent character/cliche that was reused by many filmmakers, for decades.

oh another contender for the straight-up goth theme: der golem:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3sgCaPJtzY

oh hm not black and whit but for death-afflicted puppets from prague (free associated from the golem) check out the brothers quay (they're from new jersey though ha ha ha)

totally unrelated but awesome postmodern b/w japanese horror tetsuo the iron man

brothers quay are mostly shorts but would have to be lined up.

totally unrelated and great great visuals, KAFKA'S THE TRIAL BY ORSON WELLES.

I was referring to both title cards and subtitles. Just some sort of way to follow the plot without the audio. I managed to find Castaway On The Moon and The Seventh Seal with English subtitles. German-language films are not a particular criteria I'm looking for, it's just that German Expressionist films are very unique in their visual style.

All eras and genres are welcome. For some time I thought I should show Night And The City (Nice and gritty urban noir-style with deep shadows and a somewhat desolate atmosphere) but so far I only found a version with Greek subtitles, I was hoping for English subs. They are not necessary either but add a nice touch.

Der Golem already crossed my mind, as did Faust. But I think I've already seen someone else using the latter as a backdrop at one of the countless events I've been to in the last few years.

Fritz Lang is always a good idea, I must admit though that I haven't seen Spies so far. And I've been planning to watch Tetsuo for a long time now. Lon Chaney films also came to mind. I'll look into the rest of your recommendations as well. Thank you very much.

Antagon 03.03.2015 08:47 PM

Oh and thanks for reminding me of Frankenstein Jr. That would be a great pick for the second film of the evening.

Not exactly what you're asking for but Kenneth Anger's Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome might work really well. More art nouveau than goth, and very colourful, but definitely has the surreal weirdness you might be after.

Thanks. Absolutely. Before and in-between my feature films I have block of various visuals. They tend to be very eclectic. You'll find short films, music videos, vintage stock footage, timelapses, trailers, even cartoons and Anime among them. It will go nicely with some of my musical picks.

ps without having read this, or knowing anything about it, my wife picked out young frankenstein out of the handful of movies we have at hand to rewatch (there was no netflix delivery today). hilarious. well it's about to start now...

demonrail666 03.03.2015 10:50 PM

Following on from the Quay Bros idea, some of Jan Svankmajer's animations would be great too.

And maybe I'm getting ahead of myself here but if you really want to blow some minds, the Poet in the Prince's Court sequence from Paradjanov's Colour of Pomegranates.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3WjTjGaUM10

Fucking hell, you play in front of that I might have to jump on a plane and come to the gig!

And has anyone mentioned Tarkovsky yet?

It'd be great if you could somehow upload some of those montages. Would genuinely love to see them.

i thought so since he asked for 2 movies (2 full movies)

!@#$%! 03.04.2015 12:25 AM

ps i have to go to sleep now but i thought 2001 would work magnificently without a need for subtitles as it is almost a silent movie/giant music video anyway

maybe even the ending of blow-up, too, you could play on an infinite loop

schizophrenicroom 03.04.2015 03:20 AM

so im having a terrible time in that i found out the guy i'm into... was apparently a huge man whore before me. which is cool. he's hot and i'm glad he was rolling in pussy. but i'm sort of upset that at the time he was in this phase, i was obviously emotionally available and he didn't take control of it. but seems to me into me. which makes me kind of mad but also, grateful? i dunno how to take this without going into further detail at risk of really identifying us all, which is whatever for me but for him, i understand. i don't know how to feel.

I should bookmark this page. Thanks, guys! Yes, I'm spinning eight hours straight. I've seen 8 1/2 some years ago during my Fellini-phase, should give it a re-watch. I guess the ending would be great for the montage. 2001 sure is one big visual feast. demonrail: These blocks can be quite lengthy but if you want I can try to figure out a user-friendly way to upload them somewhere.

Well, you gotta ask yourself if you are happy right now. If he's into you and you are content with that - take it for what it is for now. But if doubts are plaguing you, your mind is probably trying to tell you something. I've lost two friends last year because I couldn't handle their behavior anymore. I'm not saying the same thing applies to your situation. All I'm saying is that being either friends or romantically involved with people that have said character trait has the potencial to hit a few marks that are a bit too close for comfort.

I suppose the thing is to try and avoid clips or films the audience will have most likely seen already, for fear of it looking a bit cliched. 2001 looks great but if I saw a band playing in front of it I'd think it was a bit obvious. The nicest thing would be for an audience member or two to come up to you after the show and ask you what the clip or film was (after complimenting you on the music, obviously).

Cool if you could find a way of uploading one of those blocks but understand how hard it could be, so no problem if it's too difficult.

demonrail666 03.04.2015 07:48 AM

God yeah, Cocteau would be perfect!
