all they said on tv was that there was an explosion. If it's just a burst pipe then fair enough.

anyhoo, i was in times square at the time, didn't hear anything about it until much later.

Things were dorked up on the east side already because of the intense rains that morning that flooded out some stations...I could have taken a bus but it was quicker and easier to just hoof it. I walked over the 1st Ave cuz 2nd Ave was just full of idiots walking around in circles having useless converations on their cell phones "The street is blocked and I can't get a cab, what can I do?"

They had a small tornado on Long Island. Possible severe storms again today...

Then I got home and it was a steam pipe.

Is this not 2007? what kind of shit is this? why do they need STEAM pipes anymore? To heat the buildings? BULLSHIT!

This is all a load of shit. supposedly it was an old backed up steam pipe from the 1920's.

Its my understanding this is waste heat from electricity generation they use to heat buildings and I think that is great, honestly. I'm not sure why its there in the summer though. I think every building I've lived in NYC uses steam heat.

I can't verify the accuracy, but on one site some guy compared the situation to dropping cold water on a hot incadescent lightbulb (BOOM!) - perhaps some water leaked from yesterdays heavy rain and penetrated the asbestos layer.

My weather channel radar shows some weather building up now, just in time for rush hour. Its bizarre how these storms consistently come through NYC right around rush hour.

luckily in the US south there are cannonballs and musketballs and stuff, but no unexploded ordinance (from civil war)
