Devo is Suing McDonald's

Devo is suing McDonald's for ripping off their trademarked (literally) flower pot headgear in a Happy Meal Toy.

acousticrock87 06.30.2008 01:08 AM

I hope they both lose.

pbradley 06.30.2008 01:27 AM

You don't like Devo?

acousticrock87 06.30.2008 01:40 AM

No, but that's not why. They can try and pull the Ian Mackaye card, but it sounds like whiny money-hungry bullshit to me.

pbradley 06.30.2008 01:45 AM

I bet you believe any musician suing any corporation for copyright violation is "whiny money-hungry bullshit."

Dr. Eugene Felikson 06.30.2008 01:47 AM

"They didn't ask us anything. Plus, we don't like McDonald's, and we don't like American Idol, so we're doubly offended."

Hahaha this is funnier than that whole Slipknot vs. Burger King ordeal a while back.

Devo is claiming to be anti-corporate. This is the band that helped launch MTV, and rerecorded "Whip It" for Swiffer and Taco Bell.

acousticrock87 06.30.2008 02:06 AM

"MacKaye issued a press statement condemning Nike's actions and said that he would discuss legal options with the other members of the band. Meanwhile, fans, at the encouragement of Dischord, organized a letter-writing campaign protesting Nike's infringement. On June 27, 2005, Nike issued a statement apologizing to Minor Threat, Dischord Records, and their fans for the "Major Threat" campaign and said that all promotional artwork (print and digital) that they could acquire were destroyed."

That's how it's done.

Where?

ZEROpumpkins 06.30.2008 02:46 AM

I don't care what their justification for the action is. The point is, Devo rock and McDonalds are crap so I hope Devo win.

Toilet & Bowels 06.30.2008 04:18 AM

for a shitty band devo get a lot of attention from people who like otherwise non-shitty music.

ZEROpumpkins 06.30.2008 04:25 AM

It's impossible not to like Whip it, at least. It's my favourite "pop" song from the 80's by far.

vulva 06.30.2008 04:37 AM

Nah, Whip It is pretty bad. I haven't really heard enough Devo to comment... but Whip It does kind of suck noodles

If they were suing for another reason, such as "not liking the food", then it's even whinier. I don't think every band that sues a corporation is whiney and money-hungry, but most are. With Devo's history, I have no reason to believe they don't just want money.

ZEROpumpkins 06.30.2008 04:51 AM

How on earth do you figure that? It's got such a great bassline, and the lyrics are a humourous mockery of self-help.

If you knew Devo's history, you'd know that most of what they've done commercially has been purposefully ironic. I think I remember hearing "Beautiful World" used in a commercial once which got a laugh out of me.

And why do you assume that that statement above is the same as being anti-corporate? Seems a bit broader than of a statement that merely companies, if you ask me.

ZEROpumpkins 06.30.2008 05:03 AM

But hey even being totally anti corporate is very hard. You get critised for the slightest thing.

pbradley 06.30.2008 05:03 AM

T&B just wants to smear the truth of devolution.

It's not a concrete statement, I just feel like lawsuits like this need a good reason. I think McDonald's is a pretty bad corporation, but McDonald's isn't ripping them off. If anything it's giving a nod. No kid is going to buy the kid's meal because it looks like Devo. An apology or a public statement would suffice, I think.

I don't have anything specifically against Devo, I just have something against touchy lawsuits. This one strikes me as very unnecessary is all.

acousticrock87 06.30.2008 05:20 AM

I don't know, I suppose it's too easy to criticize while I'm just sitting at home reading an article about something I probably don't understand. They may very well have good reasons. It was just my impression.
