Doom>Jesus

On the guitar site Harmony Central they have a thread on their forum dedicated to Doom which has so far reached a staggering 407 'pages'! None of its other threads dedicated to a single genre comes anywhere even remotely close to that, while a thread about christian Rock is waaaay behind. Making me conclude that Doom is indeed bigger than Jesus.

Is it just a case of guys going all wobbly legged at the merest thought of reigning down some Doom with their newly purchased Gibson, or is Doom just getting more and more massive in general? Could Sabbath/Pentagram worship get any bigger than it is now? Could it become even bigger than Christianity? Churches of followers bowing down to the sacred SG? What a brilliant idea. The annual Iommiday celebrations. Will Ramasses become the new Creed? The sight of children singing 'Supernaut' in morning assemblies at school? The sipping of the congregational can of Special Brew? And could it even overtake Rastafarianism in its worship of da 'erb? Totally!

I like Doom ( the band ) , but I kow quite nothing about the musical genre of the same name.

You need to find out about it. It's taking over the world. HMV stocks shit-loads of it at the moment. Even my mum knows who St. Vitus are now.

Edit: That thing I said about my mum knowing who St. Vitus are? It isn't actually true. She doesn't.

Well they're both excessively severe, obessed with "epic" atmosphere, morally pessimistic, and have a following of pathetic dogmatists.

Also they are about of equal interest to me. So I wouldn't be surprised.

Just being called "Doom" isn't enough for you?

To quote wikipedia, "In general, lyrics by doom metal bands mostly present a pessimistic view of the world and life, but the approach depends and varies from one band to another. Usually, lyrical themes deal with despair, loss, depression, death, paranoia, anger, melancholy and various other negative aspects."

demonrail666 07.05.2008 10:18 AM

I get that bit. It was the moral bit I wasn't sure about. Anyway, cool.

pbradley 07.05.2008 10:27 AM

Moral pessimism isn't just pessimism, your right, but the belief that the human being is naturally evil. Still, I doubt that that belief is scarce amongst doom metal.

demonrail666 07.05.2008 10:46 AM

I think elements of that are true. I'm not sure which elements, but ... an interesting thing to think about. Although in some ways I think your description is better suited to Black Metal, rather than Doom.

witchfinder general in your avatar, dr666?

myself, i'd be delighted to see orthodox playing right before coldplay on next year's glastonbury. perhaps coachella's miracle workers who got the pixies and jamc back together will get corrupted to make a special headline appearance next year.

mtv will be airing monarch's uncut 20 minutes videos and the world would be a much happier place.

Bullseye!

Everyneurotic 07.05.2008 11:49 AM

i'd love to see that movie.

demonrail666 07.05.2008 01:55 PM

Have you not seen it? I think it's quite widely available. An absolute classic, I tell you.

demonrail666 07.05.2008 02:06 PM

Tombs of the Blind Dead is probably one of the 'Doom-iest' films I've seen.

Everyneurotic 07.06.2008 12:33 PM

definitely on my "to watch" list; tombs... too, now.

demonrail666 07.06.2008 05:53 PM

Ew, I just ordered the most doom-tastic of pedals. The D*A*M Meathead. You can see it and hear a soundclip of it here.

Listening to the new Moss album at the moment. Letting the Doom reign down on this most gloomy of days.

You know it's time to give up when your audience reaches Reverend Bizzare proportions.
