Let's fight : SYR4 appreciation thread w/poll!!! Yeah!!!
![]() SYR 4: some say it's the best SY LP ever. some say it's überwankery. what is yr stance on this rather uh singular piece? GO! |
I didn't say it was the best. I said it was among the best.
|
But I almost voted for "I like the cover". That cover rules!
|
yeah it's wicked.
The first half of CD2 is actually pretty ok. I'm on to Four6. Not as bad as i'm remembered it (at all) The one that really sealed it for me was Piano Piece. This is so ridiculous. If only it was a private joke, BUT IT'S NOT EVEN A PRIVATE JOKE. THEY DID THIS SERIOUSLY!!!! argh. |
It's rather good.
|
edges is some heavy dope
|
By the way, I've interested very much in Burdocks track from SYR4, ciello and this discharge's with some kind of jerk's, yeah! What you think of it?
voted for the cover! |
If I'm being honest, I have a tough time making it all the way thru "Pendelum Music" every time. But a lot of SYR4 is bad ass.
|
this is perpetually tied for me as the best sy album, along with dirty and confusion is sex.
it changed tons of things inside my brain and my life, after i listened to it, i never heard music the same way again. just amazing, the way it's quietly creepy sometimes, then others is more structured. the best part, i think, is the sequencing, total genius, especially when it gets to the yoko track. |
I have this on vinyl, so the sequencing is totally different from the CD version. I don't know which is supposed to be the 'right' one. I like the album very much, but I'm sorry to admit that I perhaps admire it in theory more than I enjoy listening to it in practice. It's not really that I don't 'get it', but more that I just rarely feel like actually putting it on, and have only listened to it all the way through in a single sitting on one occasion. So maybe I lose some avant-garde points there, but whatever. That said, I love love love Having Never Written a Note for Percussion, and would still always point to the album as evidence of Sonic Youths greatness not their pretentiousness.
|
its fucking great, but it aint the best (ill always be partial to confusion and silver sessions), but when i first heard this, being a punk/indie type skater kid into hardcore and pavement and sy, i was like, damn, i need more. i started checking out avant composers i never woulda even thought about, and got into other types of avant stuff as a whole.

It's really a great album

This, I think was EXACTLY the point. So batreleaser just proved the importance of the release. Haters. Also, I wanna say that I dont see "Carpenter's Piece For Piano" as any sort of joke. I think it's awesome. I wish I had taken part in its recording. |

yep i really think there was some kind of pedagogic / didactic / educational aim to this release; no matter what anyone thinks of it, they made lots of people want to know more about avant composers, including myself, that's right. |
it's good. not great. just good.
but i voted for "i don't care" because i don't ever listen to SYR releases with the exception of SYR 1. |

RIGHT. Which is great. I think it was mainly an homage and a lesson. And it seems to have worked with a great deal of us. |
I didn't pick up on the pedagogical offerings that SYR4 offered. I have never pursued any work by any of the composers. Yet, I see that pedagogical value embedded in it. I guess I just wanted it to be a continuation of the SYR series. Of course, it is more than that.
|
3 is my favorite SYR, but 4 is a great album, and a fitting artistic statement for the end of the twentieth century.

Ironic, given your handle. LOL, I made a funny. SYR4 is fucking beautiful, and Sonic Youth covering/interpreting/honouring these people is the single biggest reason why Sonic Youth is my favourite band. |
ive my copy signed by thurston and steve...hopuiing to get lee and kim in a couple of weeks and then my 7 year quest to get it signed will be done!
